Chapter 4

Auteur: Dog in a Blanket
Gabriel's POV

I locked myself in my dorm for three days. Whenever I ordered food, I waited until the hallway was empty before slipping out to pick it up.

I took the time to make sense of everything I was feeling. As the departure date drew closer, I found myself slowly letting go of the negative thoughts in my head.

The next afternoon, I had a fitness class. After lying in bed for three days, I was starting to feel restless. It would be nice to get out and move around for a bit.

The sunlight over the field was glaring. I changed into my workout clothes and headed to the gathering point. Esther and Lionel were already standing next to the volleyball net.

The teacher blew her whistle and said she needed someone to head to the equipment room to grab some volleyballs and mats. Then she called my name.

I nodded and got up. Esther stood nearby and didn't budge an inch. She scrolled through her phone, as if she hadn't heard a thing.

Lionel glanced at me before raising his hand. "Gabriel, I'll help you carry those things. I messed up the other day. Let me make it up to you."

With that, he walked toward me. Only then did Esther look up. "You're going too? Let me get the cart for you."

I ignored them and made my way to the equipment room. The shelves reached all the way to the ceiling, crammed with volleyballs, basketballs, and mats.

Esther stayed outside, looking for a cart, while Lionel and I went inside to grab the volleyballs.

The aisles between the shelves were only wide enough for one person to squeeze through sideways. I was all the way at the back, while Lionel stood in front of me, reaching for the volleyballs on the highest shelf.

Lionel glanced sideways at me, his voice softening. "Gabriel, I really did send that picture by accident the other day.

"We've been best friends for years. Are you really going to fall out with me over this? You were never like this before. Why do you get so angry easily these days?"

I felt nothing. Back then, I was naive and would give in whenever he said stuff like that. But now, I could see right through him.

"We're not friends anymore. I don't want to talk to you."

Lionel turned to look at me, his expression shifting as he pressed his lips together. Without warning, he slammed his shoulder against the shelf. It shook, and everything came crashing down at once.

Several shot puts came rolling down. All I heard was a dull thud, and my forehead started tingling, as if something had just burst inside my head.

I clutched my head as I lost my balance. I slid down against the shelf, collapsing onto the floor. I touched my forehead, and my fingers came away wet.

"Help! The shelf just collapsed!" Lionel suddenly raised his voice.

Esther dashed into the room almost immediately. "Lionel, are you okay?"

"I'm fine. Gabriel just walked into that aisle, and everything on the shelf came crashing down. I have no idea what happened."

Esther froze for a moment. Then she immediately came to her senses and scowled at me. "Gabriel, are you really still upset about that picture?

"Lionel was kind enough to help you carry these volleyballs. He even apologized to you. How could you do something like this just to get back at him?"

"I didn't…" My lips were trembling, and the pain in my forehead kept flaring up.

"All you ever do is play the victim. Can't you own up to what you've done?"

Esther looked down at me with a condescending expression, just like she did back then. "There are only two of you in the equipment room. Are you saying everything fell on its own?

"Come on, Lionel. I'll take you to the nurse's office and get that checked out."

"But Gabriel's still trapped under…"

"Just leave him be. He can stay there for a while."

Esther helped Lionel out of the equipment room. The moment they stepped outside, she shifted to the side so he would be out of the sun.

"Does your knee hurt?"

"I'm fine."

"Your knee is all red, and you're telling me you're fine? Don't try to act tough with me next time…"

Their voices grew fainter, muffled on the other side of the wall.

I sat on the floor, blood trickling through the gaps between my fingers and dripping onto the back of my hand. It was still warm.

A deep ache stirred inside me. It hurt for a while, but eventually, I went numb.

Just then, the teacher entered the equipment room. The moment she saw me sprawled on the floor, the anger on her face gave way to shock.

"What happened, Gabriel?"

Gabriel's POVThe woman raised her hand and pressed it against her chest, blood seeping through her fingers. She looked up at me, and I realized it was Esther.Esther had grown terribly thin, her cheekbones jutting out. Dark circles shadowed her eyes, but there was still a spark in them. She gazed at me, looking as if she wanted to say something. She then pulled her hand away from her chest. It was trembling, her fingertips slick with blood. Blood trickled between the gaps of her fingers, dripping onto the pages of my book. It soaked into the paper, spreading into a dark stain. Esther reached out to touch my face. Her fingers felt cool against my skin as they brushed lightly over my cheekbone. Her lips trembled as she struggled to speak. "Can you forgive me now?"She fixed her gaze on me as blood continued to drip onto the pages of my book. One drop. Then another. My tears fell onto the back of her hand, and her fingers twitched. "I forgave you a long time ago."A faint

Gabriel's POV"You didn't stand up for me," I said. "Not once.""I kept messaging in that group chat every day, but no one even bothered to reply. People judged me whenever I walked around campus. "After that shelf came crashing down on me in the equipment room, I couldn't even get up. Every second of it was hell. Did you ever stop to think about what I'd been through?"I stopped. The sun felt warm on my face. My eyes stung a little, but no tears fell. "I withdrew from school back home so I could be happy for once. I came here to start a new chapter. "I did all this for myself, not so you could come here and play victim in front of me." I pulled my hand free easily, and she made no move to hold on. "Esther." I finally glanced at her. "You should go home."I turned to leave. I had barely taken a few steps when I heard a soft thud behind me. It sounded like someone lowering themselves to the ground. The wooden bench creaked once behind me. Then all I heard was the wind rust

Gabriel's POV"You know how easily embarrassed Gabriel gets. The whole school will be talking about this tomorrow. Have you thought about how he's supposed to face everyone after this?"Lily's voice was full of anger, but she didn't shout. Every word came through clearly. "You embarrassed him in front of so many people. And you call that love?"Esther's shoulders slumped. Lily's words seemed to have taken the last bit of strength out of her. She gulped hard and took a step back in silence. Lily didn't say anything either and turned to look at me. Her gaze searched mine, full of concern. Then she held out her hand to me, palm up, and waited. I walked up to her, placing my hand in hers. She took it and led me back to my dorm. I didn't even look back at Esther. It was quiet beneath the streetlight. She didn't run after me. But I had barely taken a few steps when I heard a soft thud behind me. It sounded like Esther had sunk to her knees. But I didn't stop. Lily's hand was w

Gabriel's POVI got up, still holding that stone, and took a step back. The young women on shore were looking our way. One of them laughed, and another held up her phone to take a picture of us. Lily stepped in front of me, shielding me from them. She whispered in my ear, "If you're scared, just stick close to me. I can get you out of here. They wouldn't even notice."Lily turned sideways, angling her shoulder toward me, making just enough room for me to hide behind her. She kept her back to the people on the shore. I lowered my gaze to her shoulder and at her soft cotton shirt. She stood there as if nothing could ever bother her. I leaned forward, pressing my forehead against her shoulder blade. She then led me around the far side of the lake and took me back to the main walkway, using an unlit path. The moment the streetlights came back on, I looked up and uncurled my fingers. The stone was still warm in my palm. Just as I was about to say something, I spotted Esther in

Gabriel's POVLater, Lily and her family migrated to Cromosia. On the day they left, I hid behind the door and refused to come out. Lily stood outside and called my name twice. Mom even tried to convince me to come out and say goodbye to her, but I wouldn't budge. As soon as the door shut, I crouched behind the couch and cried for ages. I held my hot chocolate as we walked, with Lily right beside me. As a cold gust of wind swept in from the street corner, she pulled up her hood and shot me a grin. "If you ever need help, just let me know," she said. "You don't even know anyone here. At least you have me."I replied, "Sure."Lily did keep her promise. She showed up every day with breakfast in hand, waiting downstairs so we could walk to class together. Then she would head to the library and save me a seat by the window. Lily remembered that I didn't like iced drinks, so she always got me something warm instead. When the days got colder, she started bringing an extra jacket

Third-Person POVEsther closed her eyes and said, "I have to find Gabriel."Ethan fell silent for a long time. Finally, he sighed, pulled out a piece of paper from his pocket, and placed it on the bedside table. "We've looked into it. Gabriel's studying at Lembin College in Cromosia. We reached out to the school while you were in the hospital. A spot just opened up in the exchange program, and they've approved your application."Esther turned to look at the piece of paper. There were a few lines of Cromosian on it, with the school's red seal at the bottom. Beside it was a photo, printed in low resolution. Gabriel stood at the entrance of a red-brick building, with a backpack on his back, his head turned toward someone next to him as he spoke. Esther stared at the photo for a very long time. Gabriel looked different. Sure, he had lost some weight, but he looked happier. She had seen his face from that angle every day over the past three years, but she had never seen him smile
