Chapter 1

"Abby, you know I've always hated kids. But my husband is barely coming home anymore. I can't lose him! If I do, this life I've worked so hard for will be gone! I need a baby right now to secure my place in the family.

"Abby, please, have a baby for me. It won't hurt you at all. I'm just borrowing your womb for a few months. We're best friends. You wouldn't just stand by and watch my life fall apart, would you?"

As I looked into the pleading eyes of my best friend, Sabrina Reeves, my mind suddenly went into a daze. An agonizing pain flared in my lower abdomen.

Looking at the ugly reality behind her face, I fought to keep my rage from boiling over.

In my previous life, Sabrina came to me with this same sob story, claiming a baby was the only way to save her failing marriage.

But she loathed children. She couldn't stand them. Even if it were her own child, she couldn't guarantee she'd feel even a shred of affection for them.

Fully aware of her true feelings, I had told her to just follow her heart and that there was no reason to let a marriage tie her down.

But she was tuned out. She just started reciting her pre-planned script.

"Abby, I can't give up this lifestyle. But I have you! You love kids. If you just give me a child, it will save my marriage. Isn't that a win-win?"

At that time, I honestly wondered if Sabrina had lost her mind.

Noticing my silence, she continued to stare at me. "You won't have to worry about a thing. Just let them put the embryo in you for a few months, then pop it out. It won't cost you a dime, and you get a son, too. It's like a retirement plan for you and a solution for me. Isn't it perfect?"

I was speechless with fury.

As a successful professional in a major city, I could have any man I wanted. I could marry and have children on my own terms.

I wasn't infertile anyway. Why on earth would I want her charity embryo?

I didn't even know if it was clean!

Fuming, I tore the mask off her conspiracy right then and there.

Yet, remembering our years of friendship, I tried one last time to talk Sabrina out of it since it was illegal in our country.

That struck a nerve. She immediately flipped, calling our friendship fake and saying I simply couldn't stand to see her happy.

Sabrina claimed she was only offering me this golden opportunity because she didn't want me to die alone.

"You're just ungrateful," she spat, then cut ties with me on the spot.

She warned me that when she finally got her baby, I shouldn't bother coming around.

I scoffed. As if I needed her in my life.

After that, Sabrina started trying for a baby.

I thought maybe she'd finally settled down. But no, she began posting all kinds of posts on social media to remind me that I had lost her.

Her "trying for a baby" was just an excuse. She was still out there partying and living it up.

Eventually, her husband, Harold Wynn, stopped playing pretenses altogether. He showed up with his mistress and illegitimate son, telling her to move out.

When Sabrina begged him to stay, all he said was, "You're so useless. You can't have a baby on your own, and you couldn't even get your best friend to help."

Because of that, Sabrina blamed everything on me.

"If you had agreed to my suggestion, would I be getting trampled by the mistress and kicked out of my own house? It's all your fault! You bitch! I'm going to make you pay just like I did!"

While I was coming home and unlocking the door, she snuck up behind me and knocked me out.

When I came to, Sabrina was there, slicing open my stomach. "A uterus that doesn't want kids is useless anyway."

At the thought of this, I forced down the surge of hatred within me and quickly smoothed out my expression.

"Am I that kind of person in your eyes? Of course I'll help you. In fact, I'd be more than happy to help you save your marriage."

I paused, watching her smile widen, then added, "But I can't have kids."

Sabrina's face fell instantly.

I smirked inside.

This was just the beginning, and she couldn't hold it together already?

This time around, I was going to watch her lose everything. She would pay for all the pain I had suffered!

After being reborn, every time I met Sabrina, I habitually recorded our conversations.Along with her chats about finding someone to be a surrogate, I had enough evidence to crush her.I paid to have the video of Sabrina being beaten pinned on a news site. Then, I hired a marketing account to push a comparison post. "The Betrayed Wife Is Actually the Other Woman?"The buzz grew. The online community began to doubt Sabrina's act, suspecting that Harold and I were just playing our parts according to a script.Sabrina tried to explain in her live stream that this was all my dirty trick to smear her name. When the timing was right, I released the recording of Sabrina asking me to be her surrogate."Abby, please, have a baby for me. It won't hurt you at all. I'm just borrowing your womb for a few months."It won't cost you a dime, and you get a son, too. It's like a retirement plan for you and a solution for me. Isn't it perfect?"The internet exploded. After all, surrogacy was il

One day, I opened my door to find spoiled leftovers spilled all over the floor. I'd had enough.I blew up in the owners' group chat and tagged the property management."Who doesn't have hands around here? Throw your own trash away. Don't dump it in front of my door. I'm sparing your reputation for now, but if there's a next time, I'll drop your photos immediately."Before the management could reply, the group chat exploded with insults."Maybe you should think about what you've done. You've thrown your reputation away, yet here you are, pretending to care about anyone else's reputation.""What you did is way worse than a little trash.""Miss, maybe you should just move. You're dragging this neighborhood down, embarrassing us all.""Stop wasting your breath on her. Just keep a close eye on your own husbands. Otherwise, she'll make her move before you even know it."My temper flared instantly."If all you can do is insult, then don't bother replying. What I do is none of your da

While Sabrina was busy chasing after Harold's affair, I took the chance to reinforce my door lock and install security cameras.I knew she wouldn't let me off that easily.Even if there was no love between her and Harold, she could still deceive herself. But I had exposed Harold and ripped away her last shred of dignity.Sabrina couldn't stand seeing me doing better than her.One day, a local news headline caught my eye."Social Decay! Mistress Publicly Shames Legitimate Wife, Then Gets Kicked Out."I clicked on the video. Sure enough, it was Sabrina acting like a total shrew at Harold's company.Suddenly, it all felt utterly pointless.Sabrina, who took such pride in being the legitimate wife, was seen by everyone else as nothing more than a shameless mistress, scorned and despised by all.In the video, she had tried to push Zara, only to get kicked by Harold."Crazy bitch! How dare you hurt my wife? I'll kill you if anything happens to my baby!"I just treated it like a jo

I texted Zara about everything and ignored all of Sabrina's attempts to reach me.After a few days, I finally sent her ten thousand dollars."Rina, I've done all I can. I've borrowed from everywhere, but it's still just a drop in the bucket. Here's ten grand. Take it for now. We'll figure out the rest together."I played the supportive best friend, showing sympathy. But she clearly didn't want comfort. Even now, she was still cocky. She sneered and then slammed the cash onto the table, scattering the bills everywhere."Are you kidding me, Abby? How dare you brush me off like a beggar? Don't you dare look down on me. Do you really think I'm down and out, needing your charity?"I'm doing you a favor by letting you help me. Otherwise, with your social standing, you wouldn't even be fit to be my friend! Ten grand? You seriously have the nerve to offer that? Aren't you embarrassed?"I frowned and shot back, "Sabrina, do you think my family prints money? You think I can give you endl

So, since Sabrina couldn't squeeze money out of Harold, I was her next target? She was really shameless to even open her mouth and ask for something that insane.I played clueless and listened as Sabrina kept rambling."This whole surrogacy thing costs a lot, and I'm a bit short on cash. As my best friend, you have to help me. Actually, I was going to ask you to cover the whole thing, but then I thought that might be a bit much. I figured 50-50 is fairer. Just think of it as paying into your own retirement insurance."Had she lost her mind? Was I supposed to thank her for the discount?Did she really believe kids were a retirement plan?Kids were the most unreliable these days—especially when they weren't even mine.I gave a disdainful curl of my lip when she wasn't looking. Then, putting on my best nervous act, I asked, "How much do you need?""Not much. Just one million dollars." She said it like it was just 100 dollars.I yelled in shock, "What? One million dollars? Harold had betrayed Sabrina in every way. How much genuine feeling could he really have for her?Sure enough, just a few days later, Sabrina's social media started getting loud. Baby clothes and nursery supplies became her new trophies.Everyone began speculating if she was expecting.Sabrina soaked up the spotlight, and her ego began to swell. She bought jewelry worth tens of thousands and bags worth millions without blinking.Something that was not even close to happening suddenly felt like a done deal to her.I had the surrogate I arranged reach out to Sabrina, acting desperate. I told her to start with an offer of one million dollars and let Sabrina stew in anxiety a little longer. As far as I knew, ever since becoming a full-time housewife, she had lived entirely off Harold. And with her spending money like water, Harold had been sick of it for a long time.To keep her from bothering him, he gave her an unlimited supplementary card, but he still checked every major expense.
