Ivy POV:

I watched Noah's face drain of color as he read the message, his hand tightening around the phone until his knuckles went white.

"What is it?" I asked, though the dread already pooling in my stomach told me whatever it was, it wasn't good.

"The recording leaked," he said, his voice hollow. "It's already online. My agent says every scout who was still interested just pulled out."

"How could it have leaked already?" I asked, disbelief crashing through me. "You only just heard it yourself

Noah pov:"Call the school right now," Ivy said, already dialing before I'd finished reading the message aloud, her hands steady despite the terror I could see crashing behind her eyes. The receptionist picked up on the second ring, apologetic and slightly flustered once she understood who was calling. "Mrs. Carter, I'm so sorry for the alarm… I think our office sent that message to the wrong file. Let me pull Elena's actual pickup log right now."We stood frozen in the courthouse parking garage, Ivy's phone pressed between us on speaker, both of us barely breathing as the receptionist typed rapidly on her end. "Okay," she said finally, relief audible in her own voice. "I see the issue. That message referenced a different family, the Carlsons… their daughter's also named Elena, and someone on our substitute front desk staff mixed up the notification system this morning. I am so sorry. Your Elena's been here all day, she's actually finishing snack time right now.""Can I speak to her

Ivy pov:"They can't actually do that," I said, my voice rising despite my effort at composure. "Ellery, a guardian ad litem for her 'genetic interests'? She's a four-year-old girl, not a piece of property with competing claims.""Legally, it's an unusual request," Ellery admitted, exhaustion evident in his careful, measured tone. "But not impossible to file. Probate courts occasionally appoint independent representation in complex inheritance disputes involving minors, particularly when a trust's terms are ambiguous or contested. This foundation appears to be exploiting that provision.""Who's behind it?" Noah asked, his voice tight with barely controlled fury. "Ellery, someone drafted this motion specifically to reach into our lives again. I want a name."Ellery flipped through the document carefully. "The filing attorney is listed as someone named Gregory Fenwick," he said. "Representing the Ashworth Family Legacy Foundation. I don't recognize the firm, which itself is somewhat u

Noah pov:Three months of ordinary life had done something I hadn't expected… it had made me forget how quickly everything could still shift. The letter arrived on a Tuesday, official and cream-colored, tucked among grocery flyers and a birthday card from Anna. Ivy read it twice at the kitchen table, her expression sliding from confusion into something harder."It's from a law firm," she said slowly. "Whitmore, Ellery & Cross. Noah, they're representing the estate of Margaret Ashworth-Whitmore.""She's dead," I said, setting down my coffee. "Ivy, how does a dead woman's estate have anything to do with us?""Because apparently," Ivy said, scanning further down the page, her voice tightening with every line, "Margaret left a trust…a significant one and according to this letter, Elena is named as a primary beneficiary."I crossed the kitchen to read over her shoulder, dreading the building as I processed the formal legal language. The trust, established decades earlier and structured thr

Ivy pov:"Patricia Voss," the man said quietly. The room went still and I turned slowly, my mind refusing at first to fully process what he'd just said, searching Dr. Voss's face for some explanation that might make this revelation less devastating than it felt."That's not possible," Noah said slowly, disbelief crashing through his exhausted voice. "She's the one who warned us and she led us out of the museum.""She led you toward the loading dock," the man said carefully, "the exact route that would take the longest to reach federal reinforcement. If Rosalind hadn't intercepted you, if the tactic hadn't already been moving in from the east wing, you'd have walked directly into a secondary team waiting near the delivery entrance."Every head in the room turned toward Dr. Voss, and for a long, suspended moment, she said nothing at all, her carefully composed expression finally beginning to crack."He's not entirely wrong," she said quietly.Agent Reyes's hand moved instinctively towar

Noah pov:"Call her right now," I said, already reaching for my own phone despite Ivy's hands shaking too badly to manage the task herself, Elena still pressed tightly against her chest. The phone rang once, twice, three times before finally connecting, and relief crashed through me so hard I nearly stumbled at the sound of Eleanor's voice, mildly confused but entirely unharmed."Ivy? Is everything all right? You sound frantic.""Nan, are you safe? Has anyone come to the apartment?" Ivy's voice trembled violently despite her attempt at composure."Nobody's here except me and the cat next door who keeps trying to sneak in through the balcony," Eleanor said, confusion evident despite her steady, reassuring tone. "Ivy, sweetheart, what's happening?""Lock every door, every window, right now," Ivy said urgently. "Please, Nan, just trust me. Do it immediately."Through the phone, I heard the distinct sound of Eleanor moving quickly despite her age, the click of deadbolts engaging one afte

Ivy pov:"Ramirez, we have three unidentified individuals entering the east wing," Agent Reyes said sharply through the earpiece, her voice carrying the same controlled urgency I remembered from every previous crisis we'd survived together. "Everyone converges on the butterfly garden, discreetly. Do not alarm the civilians."I pulled Elena closer against my side, her small body suddenly heavy with the weight of everything crashing through my exhausted, terrified mind. "Mommy, why are we walking so fast?" she asked, confusion evident in her innocent question."We're going to see the fish next, baby," I said, forcing steadiness into my voice despite the panic clawing through my chest. "Big adventure."Noah kept himself angled protectively between us and the approaching figures, his own composure fraying visibly despite his obvious effort to remain calm for Elena's sake. Dr. Voss moved alongside us, her earlier warning still echoing devastatingly through my mind and in that moment, I
