The club reeked of sweat and sex but she loved it anyway. It was her first party outside Grey Woods and Devin wasn't there to lecture her about rolling with 'bad influences'. She had finished her first dance with a random guy and wanted to take a breather before going back to the dance floor. "Uhm... Ayra?" Selene tapped her but she was too engrossed in the pop music that was blasting from the loudspeakers. "Your brother is here..." Her voice was low and seeing Devin's scowl, she trembled a bit. "That's a lie. And I've told you he's not my brother. He's just an arrogant, pompous, undeserving brat who feels the world should bow at his feet because he's the Beta. What an annoying bunch of shit!" She spat bitterly and wanted to finish her remaining beer but a hand grabbed the bottle from her and spun her around at the same moment. She came face to face with Devin who wasn't looking very happy. "Oh, good thing you're here to hear what I said. I felt bad for saying that behind your back." She smiled and tried grabbing her beer from him but he smashed the bottle with his hand. "You're drunk." He narrowed his eyes and glared at Selene who just shyly looked away. "Why did you allow her to drink this much?" "Hey, pick on someone your own size." Ayra hit his chest severally times but they just felt like a massage to him. Her hands were as soft as marshmallows. He grabbed Ayra's waist and threw her over his shoulder. "Let me go!" He hit his back but he didn't mind. "Let's not see each other again, Selene. We're done." He announced and before she could object, he left with Ayra who was struggling to get out of his arms. "Hold still or I'm going to spank your arse." He smirked. "Really? I'd love to see you try." She was daring him but he knew better than to fall for it, not with this intense pull gradually growing within him. . . A sharp headache immediately hit Ayra as she woke up from her short sleep. "Fuck!" She growled, her head felt like it was being hit with a thousand hammers. And it felt hot in her room. Staggering to the window, she opened it and sighed deeply as the evening breeze hit her face. "I am never drinking again." She whined. That was the thirteenth time she was promising herself that but she ended up going back on her promises when the going got tough. She was about to go downstairs for a glass of water when she saw something that aroused her interest. Devin was walking in through the short gate and Selene was chasing after him. Devin stopped and eventually spoke to her but she couldn't hear what they were saying. Ignoring them, she went down for a glass of water and luckily, didn't run into Devin or her mother. It was mid-afternoon the next day when Ayra woke up. Her body ached from all the dancing last night. She was tired and sore but it was all worth it. Remembering the angry look on Devin's face, Ayra smiled satisfactorily at herself. "Best night ever..." She sang as she raced downstairs, the familiar scent of sweet potatoes hitting her nose. She knew her mother would be in the kitchen but she still went anyway. They glanced at each other for a bit before Ayra turned away and headed for the fridge. Helen smiled bitterly and turned back to what she was cooking. "I'm sorry, Ayra, for not reaching out all those years." Ayra sighed, remembering how her mother never spoke to her for four years. She had grown to think her mother was dead to her. "You got what you wanted, right? A nice husband, a warm family, the job of your dreams. I'm happy for you but please, leave me out of your life like you've always had." "I did what I had to do. For your safety. Your father---" "Save it for who cares to listen. I'm not interested in whatever excuse you have to say. And don't think sorry will be enough to fix anything between us." Ayra walked away, her tears falling freely as she leaned behind her closed door. She loved her mother and wished she had just called but no, she chose her husband and family over her. That was reason enough to hate her for the rest of her life. She ended up staying in her room all day, skipping breakfast and lunch. It was already dark when a knock came to her door. It was Helen. And she held a tray of food in her hand. "I'm not hungry," Ayra said and wanted to shut the door but Helen blocked it with one of her legs. "Selene is downstairs waiting for you. The anniversary of the Alpha and his Luna is tonight. You need to eat and get prepared." Helen calmly said, walked inside her room, and dropped the tray before leaving. Ayra's stomach grumbled when the scent of the food hit her. As she ate, Selene knocked before opening the door. "You're not dressed yet?" She squealed. "The wardrobe is there. Knock yourself out." Ayra replied with her mouth full. Selene only shook her head as she headed to the wardrobe. "What's the big deal with this party anyway?" "It's the Alpha we're talking about." "And so?" Selene walked over to her with a black short dress in her hand. "Yes, that's definitely what I wanted to wear. How did you know?" "Easy. You love causing trouble. Figured that out today." Selene smirked. After eating, Ayra had a bath and wore the dress. It was a mini dress that stopped above her mid-thighs, showing off her thick flesh. The front showed much cleavage as her breasts were big but the back was open. "See? Major distraction." Selene complimented her before helping her fix her makeup. "By the way, what's up between you and Devin?" Selene halted, tensed. She didn't want Ayra to find out about their relationship. It might ruin their friendship. "He was just mad at me because I took you to town and let you drink too much." She nervously replied while Ayra just shrugged. But deep down, she knew there was something more. "All done," Selene announced. Ayra looked breathtaking in her outfit, even Selene couldn't compete with her in terms of beauty. "Well, everybody should hold their men because Ayra is about to spice up the party." She hyped as they headed downstairs. Helen was seated in the dining area, going through some files. "Doctor Helen, are you not going to the party?" Selene asked while Ayra went outside to wait for her. "I've got many things to do. Please, enjoy yourselves and watch Ayra for me, okay?" "Alright. Goodnight." "Your mom seemed worried about you, Ayra. Why don't you speak to her at least?" Selene asked frantically. "Wait, how did you...? That's not important." She quickly rephrased. "I'd love it if you stayed away from my personal life. I don't want to talk to anyone or about anyone, okay?" Selene just shrugged. She took her hand from his and hugged herself. It was very cold out there and as always, she had forgotten to go out with her sweater. Clarence immediately pulled off his own and draped it over her shoulders. “You're kind, funny, sweet, stubborn, and not swayed by public opinions. You're beautiful and talented. You're not just someone I like being around, you're someone I can't imagine being without.” He replied to her question. Ayra grabbed the jacket like her life depended on it. “I’ll see you tomorrow?” She said, still unsure if she’d see him. “Sleep tight, babe.” Before he could hold himself, he took her lips in his, slowly and passionately kissing her. She didn’t resist, she didn’t push him away. She just melted away, not because he kissed her but because it reminded her of the first time she and Devin kissed. When was she ever going to forget about him? He finally let her go and turned his back to leave. Ayra approached the porch, staggering a little bit because of the col
Ayra couldn’t understand Devin's anger concerning money and her job. He wasn’t supposed to care what she did or how she did it. They were supposed to be strangers who wouldn’t dream of walking on the same path. She couldn’t deny that her heart dropped to her stomach when she saw how devastatingly handsome he looked. Even after he had left, his voice continued ringing in her head. “I want you to quit that job and stay home. If you need anything, call me.” He sounded so romantic and almost possessive. But she knew better than to fall for it. He had a girlfriend now, one whom he had probably turned over a million times..She shook her head and slapped her cheeks with both palms. “I need a boyfriend.” She told herself. As if the universe heard her, Clarence walked through the door and when he saw Ayra, he flashed a charming smile.“Oh, I want to hold that man and kiss him all night long.” Jane, her colleague, said dreamily and almost slipped because her focus was on Clarence. “Right?
The calm in the storm… that was the perfect way to explain Ayra's life. After her closure with Devin, they started avoiding each other like the plague. Whenever she went to morning exercises, they never spoke. Nobody truly knew what was going through their heads, not even Selene. “Why don't you try giving love a chance?” Selene brought up the topic one early morning while they were jogging around the premises of the training arena. “Why do I need to do that? Besides, nobody likes me.” She said dismissively and hoped she’d drop it, but knowing Selene, that was just the beginning. “Are you blind or something? Have you seen the eyes Clarence looks at you with? They’re screaming I WANT YOU!” She exclaimed and giggled, nudging her playfully. Ayra's eyes wandered around and caught Clarence staring at her. He was hot and girls were fawning all around him but her past situationship still had her feeling down. She and Devin were now like strangers. It had been like three weeks sinc
The word 'girlfriend' burned her throat like strong alcohol. Her gaze on Devin was intense, almost hostile. She only looked away after she had said her mind and after the prayers, they started eating. All focus was pushed to Devin and his new girlfriend. Questions about how they met and how they got together and their plans, as though they were already getting married. Every part of the conversation burned Ayra to a crisp. She thought she could stand them till dinner was over but she had already had enough. She decided to tune herself out. "So, what will you do if you eventually find your mates? The mate bond is...eh...complex." Killian asked. Isla yawned and wished the dinner would just end. Like Ayra, she wasn't interested in her brother or his girlfriend. "I believe we're meant to be. If we weren't, we'd have each found our mates by now. Right, Devin?" She sweetly nudged him and he nodded curtly. Satisfied with their answers, Killian shifted to Isla. "How about you, Isla? How's
It had already been two weeks since Devin last came home. He would call his father and stepmother and Isla too but never for once in those two weeks did he call or text Ayra. She was heartbroken and distorted for those two weeks. She would always stare at her phone or the door, waiting for when he would show up but he never did. She didn’t need a soothsayer to tell her she had been dumped. After everything, she ended up being a ‘fuck'. For all she knew, he could have been sleeping with several girls for those two weeks. Ayra felt used and wasted. She regretted everything that had transpired between them and wished she could turn back the hands of time. She was reliving a terrible experience and it haunted her even at night. She had lost the ability to sleep and was depending on sleep-inducing drugs. She even stopped reading because they reminded her of some bitter memories. She wished she could have the past three weeks erased from her head. Because she was gradually losing it.Af
“And we are home.” Ayra scurried out of the car and ran to the house, hoping she’d run into her mother. She had missed her calls throughout the trip and couldn’t wait to see her. Unfortunately, Helen was not back from work. Nobody was home. She was disappointed but it didn’t last long because Devin was there. While he helped her take her bag upstairs, she trailed behind him, admiring his masculine features. Tall, broad-shouldered, and full of muscle. Their trip was nothing short of exceptional, filled with several twists and turns, but she was glad they made it back, alive and healthy. And definitely, more than step-siblings. “It’s good to be back.” She said and stylishly closed the door after Devin had entered. “Yeah…” He drawled. “Now, I've got to go see the Alpha.” He said tiredly. He wanted to rest but this was also important. He could rest all he wanted later. “Do you have to?” She whined and poked his chest before crossing her arms around his neck. “Nobody's home right n
