Riley’s Pov

It was supposed to be a regular day. Emphasis on supposed to be. But the moment I walked into the office and saw Leo Carter—Leo freaking Carter—leaning against the reception desk like he owned the building, I knew something was up.

He looked too relaxed. Too smug. Too much.

“Morning, sunshine,” he said, handing a coffee to the receptionist like he was running for mayor.

“What are you doing here?” I asked, narrowing my eyes.

He turned, flashing that heart-stopping smile. “Campaign work. Mutual sponsor. PR needs. You know how it goes.”

“Jax didn’t mention anything about this.”

Leo grinned. “Guess he forgot to loop you in. Shame.”

I crossed my arms. “You sure you’re not just here to stir things up?”

“I live to stir things up,” he winked, then added more seriously, “But no. I’ve got real work to do. And speaking of real work…”

He stepped closer. So close that the scent of his perfume travelled up my nostrils.

God, he smelled so good. So good that I almost closed my eyes to rev

  • Let Me Go, Boss!   15: Clause 14B

Jax’s POVThe numbers in front of me blurred out.I’d been staring at the performance analytics for the past forty-five minutes, but not a single figure stuck to my head. I wasn’t even reading anymore—just cycling through tabs for the sake of pretending I was still in control. Then Caleb knocked once and let himself in.He didn’t wait to be invited. Didn’t hesitate, so I knew he wasn’t coming to give me a friendly update. This was gossip. I leaned back in my chair, laced my fingers together, and waited for him to get to the point.“You know,” he said, dragging the words out like he enjoyed them too much, “I ran into Riley last night.”

  • Let Me Go, Boss!   14: You haven't seen my man

Riley’s POVI kept walking. Limping, technically, but I refused to let the ache win. My pride was doing most of the work now, dragging me forward one painful step at a time.Behind me, Leo’s car purred softly, trailing at a crawl like the world’s most stubborn chauffeur.“Riley,” he called out again. “Just let me drive you.”I didn’t answer but he didn’t leave.I turned down the next road, hoping that would stop him, but he turned too.Oh my god.“Do you just… not take hints?” I snapped, spinning around, hands flung wide. “I said I didn’t want a ride.&rdqu

  • Let Me Go, Boss!   13: Leo

Riley’s povWe stepped out of the restaurant, the night air cool and buzzing with traffic. Leo walked a little ahead of me, jacket slung over one shoulder, humming something jazz-like under his breath.I should’ve felt good. Relieved. Hopeful. Instead, my gut was twisting. And it was not because of the wine.“Just think about it. No pressure,” his voice was low and smooth as he slid the revised proposal toward me as we approached his car.I tucked the folder tighter under my arm. “You make it sound way too easy.”“Because it is,” he chuckled. “You just have to say yes.”Just as we reached the curb, a voice echoed through the air.

  • Let Me Go, Boss!   12: A new life

Riley’s POVI knew I was screwed the moment the elevator doors refused to close fast enough.“Hold,” I whispered, jabbing the button like it owed me money. “Come on, come on—”The digital clock on my phone blinked mockingly: 11:08 AM.I was eight minutes late to a meeting Jax had very specifically told me started “at eleven sharp. Not a minute later.”Not “around eleven.” Not “give or take a few.”Eleven sharp.Of course, the moment the doors dinged open on the top floor, I burst out like a woman running away from a crime scene. However, this time, I was going into one.“Sorry!” I called breathlessly as I slipped into the glass conference room.Everyone turned to look at me. Jax included. He didn’t say anything at first. Just stared. Slowly. Like he was mentally lighting me on fire. The conference room was packed with sponsors, agents and brand managers.“Nice of you to join us,” Jax said flatly, his voice devoid of emotion. “The meeting started ten minutes ago.”I took my seat at the

  • Let Me Go, Boss!   10: Sweet tea

Riley’s POVIf I’d known this morning would start with my face plastered across celebrity gossip blogs next to Leo Carter’s stupidly handsome smirk, I would’ve stayed in bed, buried my phone in a bowl of oatmeal, and called in sick. But of course, life doesn’t work that way. I had to work because I wasn’t a nepo baby even though I'd like to be one.I knew something was wrong the moment I walked into the office and saw three of Jax's PR staff pacing the hallway like stressed-out interns before a live press conference. Not a good sign. The energy was off. Too still. Too tense. Like the calm before a very expensive, very PR-destroying storm.I barely had time to breathe before my door opened and a young lady popped her head through the doorway.“He wants to see you.” She spoke.Damn.I dropped my bag at my desk and marched straight to his office, already mentally flipping through the past twenty-four hours. What did I do? Was it because Leo and I were talking behind his back? Did that re

  • Let Me Go, Boss!   9: No pain, no gain

Five hours ago.Jax’s POVI hadn’t even been in Spain for a full 48 hours before my phone started buzzing relentlessly. I ignored it and focused on getting to my contract signing meeting. But just as I lifted my pen to the contract paper I had been prepping to sign with one of Spain’s biggest international sponsors. A call from Maple Rose Assisted Care came in.“Excuse me,” I raised my hand gently and quickly walked away to answer the call.“Mr. Maddox,” Leah’s voice called, her tone filled with worry. “I’m sorry to disturb you, but it’s your mother. There’s been… an incident. She’s been calling your name since the accident and she’s refusing to eat or drink if she doesn’t see you.”Of course this would happen. Right when I was about to sign a deal to expand, she ruins it, even from her hospital bed. Just like she always did.I hung up, took a breath, and smoothed my facial expression before heading back into the conference room.Ricardo Martín, the Spanish sponsor sat at the head of

  • Let Me Go, Boss!   8: Fake lover

Riley’s POV6:00amMy phone buzzed with a FaceTime call just as I was pouring cereal into a mug like the functional adult I am. I almost didn’t answer. I should’ve trusted my gut.Jax’s face filled my screen, sleek hotel lighting behind him, hair damp like he’d just finished swimming laps in gold coins.“Riley,” he greeted, voice already clipped. No hello, just straight to business.“You’re having a good time," I muttered, pushing my hair out of my face.“Observant as always.” He adjusted his screen. “Listen. Carter’s PR team pulled out at the last minute. You’re going with him.”I blinked. “I’m sorry, what?”“You heard me.”“You’re sending me on tour with Leo?” I asked slowly, like I needed to double-check I wasn’t hallucinating. “Is this punishment or a prank?”His expression didn’t shift. “His team flaked. I need someone who can handle the job. You’ve worked with me. Survived my coffee orders. My moods. You’ll survive Carter.”“Oh, well that’s comforting,” I deadpanned. “Nothing say

  • Let Me Go, Boss!   7: Identity Crisis

Riley’s POV By the time I walked into our office building, I felt like a freaking zombie. My entire body felt like it had been walked on by a truck, reversed on, then dragged. My legs were numb and my entire spine felt bruised and injured. We’d gotten home by 1 a.m. after that PR dinner, and somehow—somehow—Jax still managed to show up at training by 4am like he was running on some voodoo fuel. While I was running on fumes and just one slice of cold toast. How he had the energy to be alive and even train with his coach at the crack of dawn after dragging me to a black-tie event until one freaking a.m.—was beyond human comprehension. Maybe he was secretly a cyborg. Or just powered by spite and competition. I yawned and swiped my keycard, praying the door would open so I could quickly collapse into my chair for five seconds before the madness began again. But to my surprise, the door was already unlocked. What the hell? My heart rate shot up as I slowly pushed it open. Did so
