Caleb’s Pov

Echo Park was gray and muggy when I pulled up to the meet spot. A dusty bench by a fountain that hadn’t worked in years. It was the kind of place where secrets came to rot.

I spotted someone odd before his eyes caught me. He looked like he was in his mid-thirties, maybe. He was wearing a cheap bomber jacket. Scuffed sneakers. Sweat beading at his temple like he was nervous or trying not to bolt.

I approached him slowly, my recorder running.

“You called?” I said.

He nodded, but didn’t stand. Just shifted his weight like the bench might eat him.

“Talk,” I said.

He sniffed. “Jax Maddox is not who people think he is. The media loves their sad little stories, but they don’t know what he did. How he cut off his mother after she raised him. After she begged him to help.”

“He has a mom?” I raised my tone, feigning surprise.

He scoffed, “don’t try playing games with me. I worked at one of the hospitals where she was referred to,” he said, his voice a little too rehearsed. “She

  • Let Me Go, Boss!   58: They’ve got leverage

Jax’s POVMonitors lined the wall to my left, each one blank for now but ready to light up the second that bastard called again. He had called me few minutes before they arrived, asking me to pay half a million dollars. Audio techs, digital analysts, a legal consultant, and some stone-faced guy named Gray who hadn’t spoken more than ten words since we walked in surrounded the room.Honestly, I was beginning to get tired of waiting.I stood at the head of the table, my palms braced flat against it. “Let’s get on with it,” I said. “We need to catch this bastard.”Gray finally looked up. “We need you to keep him on the line for at least one minute. If you can do that, we’ll have a lock on his signal and location.”“And then?” I asked. “Then we do what we do best.”Another man—a tall, weird looking guy with eyes like steel added, “We already have law enforcement ready. Our team is standing by. We just need the green light. One trace. One clean audio file. That’s all it takes.”It sounde

  • Let Me Go, Boss!   57: Smart girls

Riley’s PovSaturday started normal. Or… as normal as my life could get lately. The number from two days ago had not called me again, and I’d checked my window every single opportunity I got but there was no strange car or person lurking around. I was beginning to think that I imagined the car.I needed a break, so I threw on leggings, a hoodie two sizes too big, and walked down to the café with my hair up and zero makeup. Just me, caffeine, and a few hours without anyone asking me about deadlines, Jax Maddox, or his annoyance. But halfway through my drink, I noticed someone strange from the corner of my eye. A middle-aged guy with his black hoodie pulled up, just sitting there like he’d been waiting for someone who never showed. But he didn’t have a cup of coffee on his table or even a laptop. He just sat there, doing nothing besides looking at me, but not directly, that would’ve made it easier to confront. His gaze kept flicking toward my table. And whenever I stared back, like I w

  • Let Me Go, Boss!   56: Dollars for secrets

A day later…Riley’s POVEveryone else had gone home hours ago, but I was still at my desk, pretending the spreadsheets I’d opened were urgent but I knew they weren’t. I was just waiting or maybe… hoping.Light spilled out from under Jax’s office door down the hall, and I kept glancing at it like a moth circling flame. He hadn’t left either. I told myself I was being hardworking. That the reason my chest felt tight and fidgety had nothing to do with him and everything to do with the deadline we’d missed or the weird vibe in the last press briefing but I couldn’t shake the feeling inside of me. After another twenty minutes of staring blankly at the same email thread, I gave up. I grabbed my bag, my mug—cold coffee still sloshing at the bottom—and walked down the hall like I didn’t already know I’d stop at his door. It was cracked open.He was sitting on the couch in the corner of his office, tie half-loosened, sleeves rolled, shirt wrinkled like he’d been fighting with it all day. One

  • Let Me Go, Boss!   55: Breathe again

Jax’s POVThe coffee I’d brought in tasted like shit. It was too bitter and too burnt. I set it down and leaned back in my chair, watching the steam curl upward as if it could distract me from the weight in my chest. It couldn’t. The pressure had been building all week—tightening like a noose every time someone looked at me like they knew something I didn’t.Especially Caleb. He’d been off. His silences were longer. His excuses were thinner. The deflections almost… rehearsed. I’d catch him staring at his phone during meetings, his jaw tight. At first, I thought it was Camilla again. Or maybe Riley. But the look he wore felt like guilt or worse—pity. And if there was one thing I hated more than secrets…it was being protected from them. The door to my office cracked open without a knock. Speak of the devil.“Got a second?” Caleb stepped in, holding a folder, but his eyes flicked toward the desk drawer I’d just closed. “Didn’t think you’d be in this early.”“I didn’t think the same for y

  • Let Me Go, Boss!   53: Rumor has it

Caleb’s POVThere was something off about Jax.Not in like the full-blown crisis-mode off. Not yet. But... off. I’d seen enough of his moods to know the difference. This morning, for instance. He came into the conference room late, black coffee in hand, and said absolutely nothing during the first ten minutes of the PR debrief. Not a grunt. Not a head nod. Not even his usual annoyed eyebrow twitch. When I paused mid-sentence and gave him a look, all I got was a distracted, “Huh? Yeah. Sure.”Sure what, man?I glanced across the table at Ethan, who was already texting someone under the table.“All right,” I said, wrapping up the meeting and clicking my pen. “We’ll circle back after lunch. Unless anyone wants to contribute more.” I glanced at Jax but he didn’t say anything.Riley walked in ten minutes after he had walked in, holding two iced coffees and trying to balance a laptop between her elbow and her ribs. She looked a little tired and flushed.Jax looked up. That was when I knew s
