KAI

I was just coming down the stairs when I spotted Arya and Dala in the backyard, hanging baby laundry.

It almost looked like cottagecore fantasy. I didn't know if the dryer didn't have enough class to dry the baby clothes but only Arya would know that.

I paused for a while, the little voice in my head urging me to walk, that someone might see. See me gawking at my “stepmother.”

Dala was half-pouting, holding up a bib as if it might bite her while Arya looked the complete opposite, chatting away with a smile so wide, it was almost contagious.

My heart froze. I can't tear my gaze away from this woman.

Why can't I?

I relished everything from the way her dress clung to her bump to the soft curve of her back as she leaned forward, to the gentleness of the sunlight on her face.

My eyes could only find their way away from her when the pipe burst with cold water that drenched everything in its path, including Arya.

Especially Arya.

I didn’t think. “Arya!”

I was in the yard in two secon

DALAI should’ve felt good. The money, I mean. Not the fact that things were completely falling apart in this family. Brothers at loggerheads, father smacking his son, Valor ignoring me, Amber still nowhere to be found, Isabella’s sickness, and whoever the hell kept texting me anonymously. My life….was a complete mess. But yeah, the damn money. It was five thousand freaking dollars, just like that, and under an alias? I had waited for anyone to reach out with their demands or anything closely related but nothing, which was why wiring three grand straight to Aunt Claudette for Isabella’s meds didn’t seem like a bad idea. She called back almost immediately. “You sent me three thousand dollars?” she asked. I could see those thinly slit eyes staring at me suspiciously.“Yeah, For Bella. You said she needs it.”“I know what I said,” she snapped. “But what I didn’t say is that you should go selling your body to get it.”My heart thumped, words dying on my tongue. Did she know??Hell, no.

DALAArya was practically squealing over Vander’s new power bike.I mean, yeah, it was a beautiful thing, sleek as hell, definitely expensive, but the way she clapped and gushed like she was the one who’d be riding it made me tilt my head. Vander just gave that little smirk of his, the one that looked more like a shrug than a smile, and nodded while everyone around him gawked at the bike. It was the same one she promised him the night of that party.I wasn’t sure why it bugged me.It could be the way she leaned into him when she spoke, or probably because nobody looked half as thrilled as Arya did. The celebration felt…off. But I didn’t let my brain run wild. She could just be excited. I slipped away quietly after the whole thing was done, thanks to Vander walking away. My camera setup from before was still there, half-packed, half-forgotten. I hadn’t even shut down the app. Idiot.I sat on my bed and opened it up again, intending to log off properly, maybe delete the last stream

KAII was already regretting this shopping trip. My thumb moved in lazy circles over my phone screen as I slouched back in the chair, trying not to let the mall’s artificial lighting give me a headache. Nancy had been inside the fitting room for fifteen minutes now, probably trying on her entire closet’s worth of micro dresses. She finally emerged, twirling in something that looked like a napkin someone forgot to fold.“Well?” she asked, stretching her arms above her head in a pose she thought looked sultry. “What do you think?”“Is that… a top?” I asked flatly. She dropped her arms, wearing a pout. “A dress,” she enunciated sharply. “It’s a dress.”I raised a brow. “Where’s the rest of it?”Nancy scowled, tugging at the hem like it would magically grow. “Whatever, Kai. You never like anything I wear.”“Because you never wear anything,” I muttered, and flitted my gaze back to my phone. She turned to the retail worker hovering nearby and said, “I’ll take it. Lovee it so much,” like

DALA“Xavier is Nancy’s brother?”He nodded, one hand shoved in his pocket, the other toying with his car keys. “Half-brother. Same dad, different moms.”I nearly scoffed. Of course. The condescension, the looks, the way they tag-teamed their snide remarks made sense now. I shook my head slowly, glancing back toward the building. “I didn’t expect that.”Knox chuckled. It was pretty off-putting how normal he seemed these past few days. “Yeah. No one ever does.”I sighed, brushing a strand of hair from my face. “Thanks for helping me get to the diner the last time, by the way.”He gave me a mock bow. “Always here to chauffeur maids in distress. Did you find who you were looking for?”“Yes,” I lied, just so he didn’t ask any more questions. That lie didn’t seem very believable. Knox watched me closely.“You’re not in any kind of trouble, are you?”No. But I knew someone who might be. “Of course not.” I let out a strained laugh. “I am not.”“Good. Know that I am here if you ever are.”“I

DALAI couldn’t find Amber. She didn’t show up for class, and her usual seat stayed cold and empty like she’d never even existed. At this point, I didn’t know if I should be pissed or worried. Knowing Amber, probably both.Or if I probably believed I knew her. After that day at the diner, it was very obvious that I didn’t.Still, I had other things to deal with, like the stupid form we were supposed to submit days ago. I rolled my eyes, clutching it in one hand as I wandered through the hallways, asking the first person I saw, “Hey, do you know where Mr. Xavier’s office is?”The girl glared at me, practically summoning the most contemptuous look she could from the pit of hell. Then she turned around and walked away, and I almost started to think I was invisible.Okay, fine. Rude.A sigh ripped out of me as I rounded the corner and headed up the stairs. I knew the offices were on the second floor. Not just the offices, by the way. The triplets’ class should be somewhere around there, t
