Chapter 1

작가: Ding
My mother had just helped me into bed when Kane's mother showed up. I wasn't surprised. Ilsa had always had perfect timing – bad timing, depending on how you looked at it.

She stood in my doorway with that same expression she'd worn seven years ago. Guilt and urgency mixed together, like she was about to ask for something she had no right to ask for, but she was going to ask anyway because she had already decided that her son's future mattered more than my life.

"Selene," she said, stepping inside. Her voice was soft, almost gentle. That was how she always started. "I need a favor. A very difficult favor."

I watched her face turn red. She kept opening her mouth and closing it again, like a fish gasping for air. I didn't let her finish. I already knew why she was here.

It was the same as seven years ago.

Seven years ago, when I first got the diagnosis, she had rushed into my hospital room before the tears on my face had even dried. I was still trying to understand what silver poisoning meant – still trying to process the fact that I was dying at eighteen – when she knelt right there on the cold hospital floor.

"Selene, please. Don't drag Kane down. The Alpha King just picked him for a three-year training post in the Northern Stronghold. If he finds out you have silver poisoning, he will never go."

I remembered how her voice had cracked, how her eyes had glistened with tears. She looked so sincere. So desperate.

"You and Kane grew up together. You've been together all these years. I'm begging you – break up with him. He's going to be the pack Alpha someday, and you're dying. How can you hold him back?"

I didn't answer. I couldn't. My throat was too tight.

She took my silence as permission to continue. "I've already worked it out. I'll find a young wolf warrior – someone from a nearby pack, someone Kane doesn't know. You just have to pretend to kiss him under the old oak tree. Let Kane see. Then you pretend to cheat on him. Pretend to break up with him."

She said it like it was simple. Like breaking Kane's heart was no harder than changing clothes.

And because I was eighteen and terrified and convinced that I was already as good as dead, I said yes.

So instead of looking for a cure, instead of fighting for my life, I spent my first weeks of dying pretending to betray the only person I had ever loved. I forced him to hate me. I drove him north.

Now, seven years later, Ilsa stood in my bedroom again.

"Selene, don't blame me. I have no choice." She twisted her hands together. "Kane's new partner, Vivra – she's the Alpha King's daughter. When Kane becomes Alpha, she'll be Luna. They're perfect together in every way. I'm begging you – just let them be happy."

She paused, and her voice dropped lower. "You know how much Kane used to love you. He had you on his heart since you were both children. If he ever finds out the truth about what happened back then... I'm scared. I'm so scared of what he might do."

"So please. Just stay away from him for a while. You're dying anyway. It's not like you should be going out, right?"

The moment that word left her mouth – dying – my mother slammed the bowl she was holding onto the floor. Porcelain shattered. Water splashed across the wooden boards.

My mother's face was red. Her whole body trembled with fury. I knew she was about to explode, to say things that couldn't be taken back, to burn bridges that I wasn't ready to burn.

So I grabbed her arm and shook it gently. A small, childish gesture. Please, Mom. Not yet.

She looked down at me, and her anger crumpled into something softer, sadder. She bit her lip and stepped back.

I turned to Ilsa. My voice came out calm – calmer than I felt.

"Luna, I can promise you one thing. I won't tell Kane what happened seven years ago. But I can't promise not to see him. I can't stay away."

Ilsa's face tightened. She opened her mouth to argue, but I kept going.

"You don't understand. I've spent seven years fighting this disease. Seven years of purification rituals and sleepless nights and pain that made me want to tear my own skin off. The only thing that kept me going was the thought of seeing him again."

My voice cracked a little. I steadied it.

"So no. I won't hide in this house until I die. I'm going to see him. Every chance I get. And if that makes things difficult for you and your perfect Vivra, then I'm sorry. But I'm not sorry enough to stop."

Ilsa stared at me. Her mouth opened and closed a few times. Then she nodded stiffly, turned, and walked out.

My mother didn't say anything. She just sat on the edge of my bed and took my hand.

I leaned my head against her shoulder and closed my eyes.

The truth was, I hadn't been entirely honest with Ilsa. Yes, I wanted to see Kane. But not because I hoped to win him back. I knew that was impossible. He had a new mate now. A child on the way. A whole life that didn't include me.

I just wanted to be near him a few more times before I died. That was all.

Was that really too much to ask?

  • Lies Beneath the Moonlight   Chapter 12

Three months later, Mary stood under the old oak tree. The leaves had turned gold and red. They fell around her like rain, drifting down from the branches and settling on her shoulders.Kane stood a few feet away, his hands in his pockets, looking up at the sky."You should go back to the North," Mary said.He shook his head. "This is my home.""There's nothing for you here.""She's here." He looked at the old oak tree, at the grass beneath it, at the path that led to the Moon Spring. "Her memory is here. That's enough."Mary was silent for a long time. Then she reached into her pocket and pulled out the moonstone."She wanted you to have this," she said.Kane looked at the stone. It glowed faintly in the autumn light – soft and warm, like a small heartbeat."Keep it for me," he said. "Until I see her again."Mary's eyes filled with tears. She nodded.Kane turned and walked toward the forest. The path was overgrown now – no one came here anymore. But he knew the way. He had walked it a

Three days passed.Kane didn't leave my side. He slept in the chair by my bed, his head tilted back, his mouth slightly open. He ate the hospital food – gray meat and lumpy potatoes – without complaining. He held my hand when the pain got bad. He read to me from a book he found in the healing house library, some old romance novel with a cracked spine and yellow pages. My mother came and went. She brought me clean clothes, my favorite tea, a photograph of my father that I kept on the bedside table. She and Kane didn't talk much, but I saw her watching him. I saw the anger in her eyes soften, just a little. On the third day, Vivra came. She wasn't alone. The Alpha King walked beside her, his face hard as stone. They stood in the doorway of my room. The King's eyes swept over me – the IV, the bandage, the gray skin – and his expression didn't change."Kane," he said. "Come home."Kane didn't stand up. He didn't let go of my hand."No," he said. The King's jaw tightened. "You have a bondin

  • Lies Beneath the Moonlight   Chapter 10

(Kane's POV)Selene's room was at the end of the third-floor hallway. The door was closed. A small sign next to the frame said Room 317.Mary stopped outside. She turned to face Kane."She doesn't have much time," she said. "The witch said maybe a month, but –" She shook her head. "She's getting weaker every day.""I know," Kane said. "I know.""And she doesn't know you're coming. She didn't want you to find her. She wanted you to move on. To live your life."Kane swallowed. "I know."Mary opened the door. The room was small. A bed, a cabinet, a chair. The curtains were drawn, but a small lamp on the bedside table gave off a soft yellow glow.Selene was lying in the bed.She was so thin. Thinner than he had ever seen her. Her cheekbones stood out sharply. Her collarbones were visible above the edge of the blanket. Her skin was pale – not just pale, but grayish, like ash.An IV dripped silver liquid into her arm. A heart monitor beeped slowly in the corner. There was a bandage on her fo

  • Lies Beneath the Moonlight   Chapter 9

(Kane's POV)The package arrived that afternoon.Kane was back at the pack healing house, sitting in a plastic chair next to Vivra's bed. She was sleeping, her breathing soft and even, one hand resting on her belly. The healer had said she could go home tomorrow. Just a scare. The pup was fine.A nurse came in with a small box in her hands. "This came for you," she said. "No return address."Kane took the box. It was light. No bigger than his palm.He opened it.His heart stopped.Inside was the moonstone. The one he had given Selene when they were seventeen. The one she had worn around her neck every single day. He would see it catching the light when she walked through the forest. He would feel it pressed between their chests when he held her at night. She had promised to wear it forever.Inside the box was a note. One line, written in Mary's shaky handwriting."She doesn't need this anymore. – Mary"Kane stared at the words. He read them again. Then again. She doesn't need this anym

  • Lies Beneath the Moonlight   Chapter 8

Kane didn't know the truth. Not really. He knew I was sick, but he didn't know how sick. He knew I had silver poisoning, but he didn't know that I was already dying. That the witch had given me a month – maybe less. The night I got home from the tavern, my fever spiked. My mother ran around the house, putting cold cloths on my forehead, changing my pillowcase when I sweated through it, calling the pack witch at two in the morning. The witch came. She was an old woman with gray hair and kind eyes, and she had been treating me for seven years. She had watched me go from a healthy eighteen-year-old to a dying twenty-five-year-old. She had held my hand through every purification ritual. She had cried with my mother when the treatments stopped working. That night, she took one look at me and her face went hard."The silver poison has reached her bone marrow," she told my mother. "At this rate, she has maybe a month."My mother collapsed. She fell to her knees on the floor and grabbed the wi

  • Lies Beneath the Moonlight   Chapter 7

(Kane's POV)The next morning, Kane left the healing house before Vivra woke up. He wrote her a note – a lie – saying he had to go handle some things for the ceremony. But he didn't go handle anything for the ceremony. He got in his car and drove. He drove through the pack territory, past the old oak tree, past the Moon Spring, past the house where he had grown up. He drove in circles for an hour. Then he parked outside Selene's house. He sat there for a long time with the engine off, staring at the front door.Seven years ago, he had stood at that door for three days and three nights. He had pounded on the wood until his knuckles bled. He had screamed until his voice gave out. "Selene! Come out! Tell me why! Who is he? Who is the man I saw you with?"She never came out. She just stood behind the second-floor window, watching him through the glass, crying. He didn't understand then. He thought her tears were guilt. He thought she was crying because she had been caught. Now he wasn't so
