Chapter 1

Author: Maroon Cypress
Those words struck me like lightning, and I stood frozen to the spot.

Just then, Ethan Stone's driver came breathlessly running over. "I have type O blood, Dr. Reid! I can donate!"

My eyes were bloodshot as I forced back my shudders and entered the operating room.

After three hours of surgery, the boy finally pulled through. Huge beads of sweat dripped down my forehead as I peeled off my gloves.

The moment I stepped out of the operating room, Ethan grabbed my shoulders and asked, "How's the boy?"

My bloodshot eyes startled him a little as I gave a weak nod, feeling utterly drained of every ounce of strength.

Seeing me head out, Ethan quickly followed and draped his coat over my shoulders. "Your shift's over, right? Let me take you home."

He opened the front passenger door like he always did, but I walked past him and slid into the back seat instead.

The moment I sat down, exhaustion hit me so hard I could barely keep my eyes open. Somehow, out of the corner of my eye, I spotted a toy block under the seat.

In a daze, I recalled what Chloe Harper had said when she rushed her son into the hospital. "Hang in there, Peanut! Daddy promised to take you out every weekend, so you can't break his promise for him!"

Back then, I had no idea Ethan was his father and even felt sorry for him. But now that I did, I finally understood why Ethan always had business trips every weekend.

Those trips were family weekends meant for just the three of them.

When we pulled up at the apartment, Ethan opened the door and helped me out. But right after I'd just settled on the couch, he was ready to leave.

I glanced at the empty dining table and couldn't help but ask, "Aren't you going to cook tonight?"

I was always so busy at work that forgetting to eat was a normal occurrence. That worried Ethan so much that he'd pick me up from work and make me dinner every night.

But tonight, he obviously wasn't in the mood to cook.

Frowning, he glanced at his phone. "Just order takeout. I've got something I need to take care of, so don't wait up."

Then, he turned and left before I could say a word. That scene had me digging my nails into my palms, leaving deep, red marks.

When I rummaged through the shelves for some microwave pasta meals, I stumbled across a well-hidden photo album, tucked in a cardboard sleeve.

The moment I flipped it open, I froze. A handwritten caption was attached below each photo.

"Peanut, one month old.

"Peanut's first steps.

"Peanut's first picnic."

Ethan had been there for every one of the boy's firsts. In the photos, he held Peanut in his arms, while the woman leaned against his shoulder and smiled sweetly.

For some reason, I remembered how I once told him I wanted a baby. He'd pulled me into his arms and softly said, "Let's just enjoy our time together for now. There's no rush."

So, was he really cherishing our time together, or was he just afraid that if we had a child, Peanut would feel left out and that he wouldn't be able to give him all his love?

The answer had always been right under my nose, yet I never saw it.

It was only when my fingers brushed against a damp corner of a photo that I realized I was crying.

I barely slept that night.

Before dawn, I was jolted awake by Ethan's call. "Something went wrong with Peanut, Megan! Come quick!"

Part of me wanted to leave him to handle it alone, but I knew that I had a duty as a doctor.

After briefly washing up, I ran all the way to the ward. I was gasping for breath as I reached the door, and what I saw froze my heart.

Chloe was curled up in Ethan's arms and sobbing quietly, while he gently patted her back, as if to offer comfort. Then, he leaned in and planted a kiss on her forehead.

Chloe looked like she couldn't believe what she'd heard. She grabbed Ethan's collar and yelled, "Are you saying you're not only giving my child to someone else, but also sending me away so that we'll never see each other again?"Ethan didn't answer, but his silence said enough.Chloe bit her lips, trying to fight back tears. "When he's sick, you're never here, and now you want to send him away!"Do you even know why he has a fever? It's because he ran out to see you last night! He was in such a rush that he didn't even have time to put on a jacket!"He ran all the way to the hospital in nothing but a thin undershirt, crying for his dad! And you were here, clinging to some other woman!"She spun on me with hateful eyes, like I was the one who ruined her perfect family. I speechlessly pulled out my phone and played the video Layla had recorded. "You made him take off his clothes on purpose, all just to milk Ethan's pity. I can't believe how far you'd go, risking your kid's health

I reached out to stop Layla, murmuring, "She's the woman Ethan cheated on me with, and that kid's theirs."Speaking of the devil, Ethan pushed through the door and entered. When our eyes met, a flicker of delight crossed his face. He strode over to our table and exclaimed, "What a surprise, Megan! Are you having lunch here, too? Did you get the flowers I sent? Do you like them?"He was so focused on me that he didn't notice Chloe glaring daggers behind him, looking like she could kill me on the spot.I subtly shifted away and coldly said, "Don't send me flowers again."Ethan froze, visibly thrown off. "Why not? Don't you like them? Shall I send you a different type of flower? Or I could buy one of every flower and make you a huge bouquet. How does that sound?"I let out a weary sigh, feeling my frustration simmering up. "Are you really this clueless, or are you just putting on an act? It's not about the flowers, Ethan. I don't like you, so I hate whatever you give me."Also, you

I stared speechlessly at the note before tossing the bouquets into the trash.Later, Calvin and I left the hospital together since we were headed the same way. But just as we stepped outside, I spotted Ethan holding another bouquet, looking at me."This is a new flower species, Megan. Do you like it?"I didn't take it, finding it absurd. After we got married, he barely gave me flowers. I used to think he just wasn't the romantic type, but now, I was aware that he knew better but just hadn't bothered with me.I was about to throw the bouquet right in his face when a small, childish voice called out some distance away, "Daddy!"Ethan's head whipped around to find Peanut stumbling toward him and sweetly whining, "You haven't visited for so long, Daddy! I've missed you so much! Also, Mommy cries every night…"Just then, Chloe came up behind him with swollen and red eyes, like she'd just been weeping.Ethan's expression tightened as he glanced at me and scolded her under his breath,

Puzzled, I turned and frowned when I saw it was Ethan. He caught the displeasure in my expression and let out a cold laugh. "Disappointed to see me, huh? If I'd shown up any later, would you two have been kissing already?"His sudden jealousy ignited my anger as I snapped, "What does it matter to you?"But he ignored me and turned to look at Calvin. "All these years, and you're still lurking around? It seems like you haven't had enough of following her around in college, so you're still tailing her now, huh?"At that, that strange familiarity about Calvin finally clicked.Back in college, there was always this guy following me around. He never said much and would leave a bottle of water during my PE class, slip me a sandwich when I skipped breakfast, or fill my notebooks with notes when I dozed off in class. He was almost non-existent, yet present in every corner of my life until Ethan and I got together. That was when he vanished without a word.Looking at the two of them now,

Ethan seemed startled to see that I was calm.If it'd been before, I would have rushed in to grab him a towel and brew him a cup of coffee to warm him up. But now, I just stood there and watched him like he was a stranger who'd shown up uninvited. The silence dragged on until he finally spoke. "Are you still upset, Megan? Look, I brought your favorite macarons!"He reached into his bag and pulled out a soggy box ruined by the rain. The macarons inside were damp and crumbling. He fumbled through it anyway and picked out a few that still looked whole before holding them out to me. "These are fine, so try one. I'll have my assistant get you more tomorrow."I looked at the macarons without reaching for them. "What are you doing, Ethan? I told you not to come, didn't I?"He awkwardly placed the macarons back in the box and softly muttered, "You always say the opposite when you're mad, and I know it was just your anger talking. You wanted me to come."I couldn't help but laugh at his

For the first time in a while, my world finally fell quiet.I sat there, staring at the ring on my finger, and was thrown into memories of the past.Back when the pandemic broke out, I volunteered to help in another state.Everyone said there was a nine-in-ten chance I wouldn't come back, so I kept it a secret, but Ethan found out anyway. He came alone and walked straight into the quarantine zone, ignoring every warning. I watched as he pushed through the crowd and dropped to his knees. "Megan, if you can make it back, I'll give you a wedding. And if you don't… this counts, too. I'll follow you to all ends of the earth and beyond."People called him a lovestruck fool, but he didn't care and stayed to volunteer right beside me.He used to say, "Wherever you are, that's where I'll be. Through fire, blood, and hell itself."When it was finally over, and we won the pandemic, he threw me the grandest wedding I'd ever dreamed of.At the wedding, the calm, stoic man everyone knew cr
