My dear Miss Blackwood,

I am so very sorry to have left you on such unfortunate terms . . . and even more sorry that I have not written to you sooner.

You may already hate me for my silence, but please know that had there been any way to contact you, I would have. It was not safe to write to your home, because I couldn’t risk Sotirios finding out.
