Chapter 25: Pulling Weight

"Move!" Thalen barked, his voice splitting the heavy roar of the central engine room as a massive iron fist smashed into the catwalk railing inches from his face.

Metal shrieked in protest, showering white-hot sparks across the drop below. Zeyric didn't hesitate, diving past a swinging brass arm and driving his fist forward with a concussive pulse of white mana that shattered the nearest construct's knee joint. The automaton toppled sideways with a deafening screech of rending metal, its violet soul-gem blinking erratically before dimming into ash.

"Left flank!" Thalen shouted, parrying a lunging blade of sharpened brass with his rapier while spinning low to sweep another automaton’s feet.

Zeyric pivoted instantly, his palm flashing with a dense, compressed burst of energy that caved in the second guard’s chest plate just as Thalen's blade pierced its core. They moved with a terrifying, beautiful coordination, their bodies shifting in absolute synchronization without a single spoken command, anticipating each other's blind spots as though operating from a single, hyper-accelerated mind.

"That's two," Zeyric panted, wiping sweat and soot from his brow as the final automaton reared back, its steam pistons hissing furiously. "Careful with this last one—its core is overloading."

"I see it," Thalen snapped, his eyes locked on the glowing violet gemstone pulsing erratically within the towering machine's chest. "On my count. Three, two, one—"

Before Thalen could finish the sequence, the automaton lurked forward with unnatural speed, its heavy brass shoulder slamming directly into Thalen's chest. The impact threw him backward off balance, his boots sliding across the slick, grease-coated edge of the suspension catwalk.

"Thalen!" Zeyric roared, launching himself across the narrow walkway just as Thalen’s footing gave way entirely.

The world seemed to drop out from beneath them. Thalen plummeted over the edge, his fingers desperately scraping against the cold, rusted iron of the outer rim before catching on a protruding bolt. The sudden, violent jerk of the fall sent a blinding, agonizing shockwave straight through the soul-bond.

Up in the catwalks, the remaining automaton let out one final pneumatic hiss before collapsing into a heap of scrap metal, leaving the vast engine room utterly silent save for the rhythmic, deafening thrum of the great brass boiler below.

"Zeyric!" Thalen’s voice strained from the darkness beneath the walkway, tight with panic and sheer physical agony. He was dangling by one hand over a twenty-foot drop into a dense maze of spinning, razor-sharp gears and boiling steam vents.

"I've got you! Don't look down!" Zeyric slammed his stomach against the edge of the catwalk, stretching his arms as far as they could possibly reach into the empty air.

He lunged downward, his fingers closing around Thalen’s wrist just as the structural stress of the catch pulled violently on his own frame. A sickening pop echoed through the chamber, followed by a blinding flash of white-hot agony in Zeyric's right shoulder as the joint dislocated completely from the jarring shock.

"Argh—!" Zeyric choked out a cry, his vision swimming with sudden, dizzying black spots.

At the exact same moment, Thalen let out an identical, piercing scream of torment from below. The sympathetic pain of the soul-resonance ripped through Thalen's nervous system with terrifying precision, mimicking the exact trauma in his own right arm as his shoulder popped out of its socket in exact parallel to Zeyric's injury.

"Your shoulder—!" Thalen gasped, his fingers slipping another inch down the rusted bolt as the weight of their combined bodies strained against a single, screaming arm.

"Don't worry about my shoulder!" Zeyric grit his teeth, tears of sheer pain welling in his eyes as he planted his boot against a floor bracket for leverage. "Worry about not dropping into the meat-grinder!"

"I can't pull us up alone with one arm!" Thalen shouted back, his face pale, sweat mixing with the grime on his forehead. "Use the other one! Pull, Zeyric!"

"I'm trying!" Zeyric snarled, throwing every ounce of his remaining strength and raw, unfiltered mana into his left arm.

The soul-bond hummed fiercely, acting as a living conduit that pooled their collective energy and focused it through Zeyric’s trembling muscles. The white mana flared to life around his hand like a crackling halo of light, burning away the pain just enough for him to secure a firmer grip on Thalen’s forearm.

"Together," Thalen urged, his voice dropping to a harsh, desperate whisper as he reached up with his free hand and grabbed Zeyric’s wrist in return. "On three. One... two... three!"

With an explosive surge of coordinated muscle and synchronized mana, Zeyric heaved upward. Thalen used every shred of his agility to kick off the damp stone wall beneath the catwalk, launching their combined weight over the precipice. They tumbled in a tangled heap onto the safe, solid steel of the walkway, gasping for air like fish stranded on a dry dock.

For several long moments, neither of them moved. They lay sprawled across the metal grating, their chests heaving in perfect, agonizing unison, their dislocated shoulders throbbing with a dull, sickening ache that echoed back and forth through the invisible tether binding their souls together.

"Remind me," Thalen panted, staring up at the vaulted iron ceiling with half-closed eyes, "to never let you pick the route through the auxiliary shafts again."

"Me?" Zeyric wheezed, weakly turning his head to glare at him, though a faint, breathless smile tugged at the corner of his lips. "You were the one who insisted we take the short cut past the boiler room. My shoulder is currently detached from my body because of your terrible architectural preferences."

"Your shoulder," Thalen corrected, wincing as he experimentally flexed his own useless, dangling right arm, "is our shoulder. And right now, it feels like it's been run over by a carriage."

"At least we're not mincemeat," Zeyric muttered, slowly pushing himself up onto his good elbow. He looked down at the massive, spinning gears far below them, still churning with relentless, lethal momentum. "That was entirely too close for comfort."

"Comfort was left behind the moment Malakor started experimenting with soul-gems," Thalen said, his tone turning sharp as he used his left hand to grip his dislocated right arm and forcefully pop the joint back into its socket with a sharp, sickening crunch.

Zeyric winced in sharp, delayed sympathy as the corresponding agony flared through his own arm, but before he could complain, Thalen reached over and mirrored the motion on Zeyric's shoulder, snapping it back into place with practiced, ruthless efficiency.

"Son of a—!" Zeyric hissed, sucking in a sharp breath through his teeth as the joint locked back into alignment. The pain was blinding for a split second, quickly subsiding into a dull, manageable ache as the stabilization properties of their bond began to work their magic. "Warn a guy before you commit acts of impromptu medical violence."

"We don't have time for warnings," Thalen interrupted, already scrambling to his feet and pulling Zeyric up right along with him. His rapier was still clutched firmly in his left hand, the blade catching the amber glow of the power core. "Listen."

Faint, metallic echoes bounced down the vertical shaft far above them. Shouts, sharp and authoritative, filtered through the ventilation grates.

"They've cleared the debris from the upper door," Zeyric realized, his eyes widening as the reality of their situation snapped back into focus. "Malakor's personal guard must be swarming the utility levels by now."

"Which means," Thalen said, his voice entirely devoid of panic, replaced instead by cold, tactical calculation, "we have exactly thirty seconds before every automaton and enforcer in this sector descends upon this exact catwalk."

"Where do we go?" Zeyric asked, scanning the dim, industrial landscape of the engine room. "The upper shafts are compromised, and the main doors lead straight back into the central courtyard."

"The lower drainage pipes," Thalen pointed toward a rusted, circular hatch embedded in the base of the massive boiler wall, half-hidden behind billowing clouds of white steam. "It empties straight into the Sunken Market's outer runoff canals."

"The Sunken Market?" Zeyric raised an eyebrow, though a grim smile crossed his face. "Back into the squalor and the smugglers?"

"It’s the only place where Malakor’s jurisdiction ends and our anonymity begins," Thalen replied, darting toward the hatch with Zeyric right at his heels. "Unless you'd prefer to stay and explain the ledgers to the Vice-Headmaster ourselves?"

"Lead the way," Zeyric snapped, ducking beneath a burst of scalding steam as they reached the heavy iron door.

Thalen didn't hesitate. Gripping the wheel-valve with his left hand while Zeyric channeled a sharp pulse of mana to shatter the rusted locking mechanism, they threw the hatch open wide. The damp, foul-smelling air of the lower drainage system rushed up to meet them, thick with the promise of escape and the bitter, familiar chill of the subterranean tunnels.

Without looking back, they dived headfirst into the dark, plunging into the winding pipes just as the heavy thud of boots echoed onto the catwalk they had just abandoned.

"If this stone arch collapses on us, write a very flattering obituary about how I was always right.""I will write nothing of the sort," Thalen snapped back, planting his palm harder against Zeyric’s back to lend his own weight to the effort. The physical exertion instantly bled through their connection, making Thalen’s breath hitch in his own throat in a mirror of Zeyric’s strain. "If the arch collapses, we die together under three tons of masonry, and your ghost will still be complaining about my choice of reading material.""Only because your reading material has led us directly into a pitch-black subterranean void that smells intensely of wet iron and very old mistakes," Zeyric muttered. With one final, desperate heave, he threw his entire weight

Chapter 44: Cages of the Past"If that iron gives way another inch, we’re going to drop straight into the foundation’s main sewer line," Zeyric whispered, his boots slipping against the damp, dust-caked flagstones as he threw his upper body weight behind the rusted poker. "And I refuse to spend our first week of academic rehabilitation swimming through old ink and discarded quills.""Keep your weight centered or the leverage is entirely useless," Thalen shot back, planting his palm flat against Zeyric’s shoulder blade to steady him. The sudden tactile contact sent a familiar, low-voltage thrum racing along their shared soul-bond, instantly syncing their breathing. "And stop complaining about the sewer line. You lived in the outer slums for half your life; a little drainage water should feel remarkably like home.""There is a vast difference between municipal runoff and the historical accumulation of two hundred years of delinquent wizard apprentices," Zeyric grunted, his muscles strai

Chapter 43: The Library’s Secret"If Librarian Thomas catches us down here with an iron poker, he’s going to suspend us until our hair turns gray," Zeyric whispered, his hand clamping tightly around the handle of the rusted tool as the heavy iron gate gave a loud, metallic shriek. "And considering my hair is already half-ruined by your dismal locking-picking skills, I’d prefer not to push our luck.""My lock-picking skills are entirely adequate for a restricted academic vault that hasn't seen a fresh grease application since the second age," Thalen shot back, leaning his weight against the cold stone wall just behind the restricted grimoire section. "And keep your voice down. The acoustics in this library are designed to amplify treasonous whispering.""It wouldn't be treason if we were actually stealing something useful instead of hunting for a mysterious floor grate based on a cracked margin note," Zeyric muttered, though he wedged the tip of the poker into the seam of the flagstone

"And stop wincing. Every time you grimace, my shoulder feels like it's being pulled out of its socket all over again.""Then perhaps you should lie still and stop broadcasting your complaints directly into my prefrontal cortex," Thalen muttered, though despite his sharp words, his gaze softened as he reached across the narrow gap between their cots, his fingers brushing against Zeyric’s knuckles. "Are you actually okay?""I’m alive, which is more than I expected when Malakor’s dome dropped," Zeyric murmured, his defiance melting away under the quiet gravity of Thalen’s touch. He let his hand slide upward, intertwining his fingers

Chapter 41: A New Normal"A ghost who lost its sheet is remarkably accurate," Zeyric muttered, shifting slightly on the narrow infirmary cot with a soft wince that mirrored the dull ache still lingering in Thalen’s chest. "Though given that we nearly blew the entire administrative wing into the lower catacombs, I’d say looking like a ghost is a minor penalty.""A minor penalty," Thalen echoed dryly, turning his head on the stiff pillow to better observe the way the afternoon light caught the dark circles beneath Zeyric’s eyes. "You collapsed like a felled timber right after hurling Malakor into a stone wall. If Professor Starwyn hadn't caught you, you’d have cracked your skull on the cobblestones.""And if you hadn't intercepted Malakor’s gravity spear with your own sternum, I wouldn't have had a functional nervous system left to collapse with," Zeyric retorted, his tone dropping the dry humor for something sharper, more immediate. He propped himself up on one elbow, ignoring his own

Chapter 40: Permanent Ink"I can move just fine," Thalen muttered, his voice raspy and dry as he tried to sit up, only for a sharp spasm of pain to rip across his chest. He hissed through his teeth, sinking back against the lumpy feather pillow with an ungraceful groan. "Though, I suppose my ribs disagree with my ambition.""I told you not to move," Zeyric replied, though a faint, tired smirk touched the corners of his mouth. "Unless you enjoy feeling like an iron anvil was dropped on your torso. Because trust me, I felt every single ounce of it.""You always have to have the last word, don't you?" Thalen glanced sideways, taking in the pale, worn-out state of his partner. The fierce, incandescent white mana that had shattered Malakor’s dome just hours ago had left Zeyric looking as though he had run a marathon through a furnace. "How are you holding up? Beyond the obvious fact that you look like a ghost who lost its sheet.""I've been better," Zeyric admitted, staring up at the vault
