Chapter 36: Unlocked Potential

"Thalen!" Zeyric shrieked, the name tearing from his throat in a ragged, animalistic roar as the sickening snap of breaking bone echoed off the high marble walls of the courtyard.

The impact was instantaneous, a localized seismic shock that radiated straight through the soul-tether and detonated behind Zeyric’s eyes. Thalen slammed backward onto the cold cobblestones, his chest caving inward as Malakor’s invisible gravity spear buried itself deep into his ribs, crushing lung tissue and stopping his heart with casual, sadistic precision.

"You fool," Malakor laughed, his voice a low, vibrating hum of supreme arrogance as he stepped forward, his rune-etched staff glowing with stolen life-force. "A useless gesture for a worthless bond. You die together."

Zeyric didn’t scream. A cold, terrifying numbness flooded his veins, instantly replacing the panic as Thalen’s side of the mental link flatlined into a flat, agonizing hiss of terminal white noise. Through the shared conduit, the horrific sensation of a heart refusing to beat, of lungs filling with warm, coppery fluid, drowned out the rest of the world.

"Get up," Zeyric whispered, his voice trembling violently as he scrambled across the blood-slicked stone to cradle Thalen’s limp, unresponsive head. "Thalen, you damned aristocrat, get up. You don't get to leave me here alone after everything we fought through. Get up!"

There was no response. The silence on the other end of the soul-tether was absolute, heavy, and final.

"Pathetic," Malakor scoffed, raising his staff for the finishing blow. "Let the dead bury the dead."

A blinding spike of pure, unadulterated rage detonated inside Zeyric’s chest, burning away the numbness and replacing it with a roaring inferno of white-hot fury. For months, he had fought his own lack of raw talent, relied on Thalen’s precision, and cursed the erratic nature of his own magic. But as he looked down at Thalen’s pale, blood-stained face, every trace of doubt vanished. He stopped trying to control the mana, stopped holding back the floodgates, and simply opened his entire aura to the massive, humming academy core pulsing deep beneath the stone floor.

"You want a sacrifice, Malakor?" Zeyric snarled, his eyes snapping upward to lock onto the Vice-Headmaster with a gaze burning so bright it made the surrounding enforcers flinch. "Take it all!"

With a deafening shriek of stressed metal and fracturing stone, the ground beneath Zeyric’s boots split open. The academy’s central power core—a massive subterranean engine fueled by centuries of siphoned life-force—surged upward in response to his open invitation. A torrent of raw, unfiltered elemental energy shot up through the courtyard, wrapping around Zeyric in a spiraling vortex of blinding white light.

"What is he doing?" one of the enforcers yelled over the deafening roar, dropping his staff as the heavy metal began to melt under the sheer thermal output. "He's overloading the circuit!"

Zeyric’s charred oak wand didn't just glow; it fractured down the center, the wood splintering apart as a beam of pure, incandescent stellar fire erupted from his palm. His body arched backward as the immense volume of power flooded his nervous system, threatening to burn him alive from the inside out. Every vein in his arms stood out like jagged, glowing wires of white light, and his skin radiated a scorching, desert-like heat that turned the puddles of rain into instant billows of steam.

"Stop him! He'll blow us all to the third tier!" Malakor shouted, his initial confidence finally cracking as his face twisted into an ugly mask of genuine panic. He jammed his staff downward, channeling the full defensive weight of the violet dome directly at Zeyric’s head.

Zeyric didn't flinch. Driven by the desperate, agonized echo of Thalen’s flatlining heartbeat, he didn't just channel the magic—he became it. With a violent sweep of his right arm, he whipped the massive column of white mana around him in a ferocious, sweeping arc.

CRACK!

The impact of Zeyric’s wave against Malakor’s violet containment dome sounded like the sky itself tearing in half. The shimmering purple barrier shuddered violently, fractures racing across its curved surface like spiderwebs on dry glass before exploding outward into a million harmless, fading sparks of violet dust. The shockwave rolled across the grand courtyard with the force of a tidal wave, sweeping enforcers off their feet and slamming Malakor backward against the massive marble pillars of the administration hall with bone-crushing force.

Malakor’s staff shattered into a thousand jagged splinters, the corrupted soul-gems embedded in its shaft turning instantly to gray ash. The stolen life-force trapped within the device rushed backward down the drainage channels, flowing back into the bodies of Veyron and the other catatonic victims across the campus, restoring color to their skin as they gasped for air.

In the center of the devastated courtyard, the blinding white light slowly faded, leaving behind an eerie, heavy silence.

Zeyric stood amid the drifting wisps of steam and ash, his breathing ragged and shallow. For a terrifying second, his vision blurred at the edges, the immense physical toll of channeling the core threatening to drag him down into the dark abyss right alongside Thalen. His knees gave out, his charred wand slipping from his trembling fingers to clatter against the scorched stone, and he collapsed sideways onto the cobblestones.

"Thalen," Zeyric choked out, his hand blindly searching the blood-stained ground until his fingers brushed against Thalen’s cold, lifeless wrist.

No pulse. No spark across the tether. Just the empty, echoing void where their shared heartbeat used to live.

"Zeyric! Hold on, stay with me!" A frantic voice cut through the ringing in his ears, followed by the sound of heavy boots skidding to a halt on the ash-covered marble.

Professor Starwyn dropped to her knees beside them, her face pale as she shoved her hands against Thalen’s chest and began rapidly chanting emergency stabilization incantations, her palms glowing with a bright, frantic emerald light.

"He took the gravity spear directly to the sternum," Zeyric sobbed, his voice breaking entirely as his vision darkened further, the edges of his consciousness fraying into nothingness. "The bond... it flatlined, Professor. He's gone."

"Quiet, boy, and stop wasting your remaining mana on despair," Starwyn snapped, her hands pressing harder into Thalen’s chest as she forced a surge of raw restorative energy into his heart. "A soul-tether doesn't just sever because a body stops! The spark is still trapped in the feedback loop! Breathe for him, Zeyric! Pull him back through the link!"

Zeyric didn't hesitate. Even as his own lungs burned and his vision faded to black, he threw every remaining ounce of his willpower into the silent, broken pipeline of their bond, reaching out into the dark void and screaming Thalen’s name in his mind.

A sudden, violent gasp echoed from Thalen’s lips, followed by a harsh, rattling cough as dark blood spilled onto the stone. The flatline in Zeyric’s mind violently snapped back into a frantic, hammering rhythm, matching his own desperate pulse.

Before Zeyric could process the sudden rush of air returning to his own chest, the darkness finally won, and he collapsed completely across Thalen’s chest, plunging headfirst into unconsciousness.

Chapter 45: Panic Room"The hinge is finally shifting, but so is the entire foundation," Zeyric hissed, his boots sliding another inch across the grit-covered floor as the heavy iron grate shrieked against centuries of accumulated grime. "If this stone arch collapses on us, write a very flattering obituary about how I was always right.""I will write nothing of the sort," Thalen snapped back, planting his palm harder against Zeyric’s back to lend his own weight to the effort. The physical exertion instantly bled through their connection, making Thalen’s breath hitch in his own throat in a mirror of Zeyric’s strain. "If the arch collapses, we die together under three tons of masonry, and your ghost will still be complaining about my choice of reading material.""Only because your reading material has led us directly into a pitch-black subterranean void that smells intensely of wet iron and very old mistakes," Zeyric muttered. With one final, desperate heave, he threw his entire weight

"And I refuse to spend our first week of academic rehabilitation swimming through old ink and discarded quills.""Keep your weight centered or the leverage is entirely useless," Thalen shot back, planting his palm flat against Zeyric’s shoulder blade to steady him. The sudden tactile contact sent a familiar, low-voltage thrum racing along their shared soul-bond, instantly syncing their breathing. "And stop complaining about the sewer line. You lived in the outer slums for half your life; a little drainage water should feel remarkably like home.""There is a vast difference between municipal runoff and the historical accumulation of two hundred years of delinquent wizard apprentices," Zeyric grunted, his muscles strai

Chapter 43: The Library’s Secret"If Librarian Thomas catches us down here with an iron poker, he’s going to suspend us until our hair turns gray," Zeyric whispered, his hand clamping tightly around the handle of the rusted tool as the heavy iron gate gave a loud, metallic shriek. "And considering my hair is already half-ruined by your dismal locking-picking skills, I’d prefer not to push our luck.""My lock-picking skills are entirely adequate for a restricted academic vault that hasn't seen a fresh grease application since the second age," Thalen shot back, leaning his weight against the cold stone wall just behind the restricted grimoire section. "And keep your voice down. The acoustics in this library are designed to amplify treasonous whispering.""It wouldn't be treason if we were actually stealing something useful instead of hunting for a mysterious floor grate based on a cracked margin note," Zeyric muttered, though he wedged the tip of the poker into the seam of the flagstone

"And stop wincing. Every time you grimace, my shoulder feels like it's being pulled out of its socket all over again.""Then perhaps you should lie still and stop broadcasting your complaints directly into my prefrontal cortex," Thalen muttered, though despite his sharp words, his gaze softened as he reached across the narrow gap between their cots, his fingers brushing against Zeyric’s knuckles. "Are you actually okay?""I’m alive, which is more than I expected when Malakor’s dome dropped," Zeyric murmured, his defiance melting away under the quiet gravity of Thalen’s touch. He let his hand slide upward, intertwining his fingers

Chapter 41: A New Normal"A ghost who lost its sheet is remarkably accurate," Zeyric muttered, shifting slightly on the narrow infirmary cot with a soft wince that mirrored the dull ache still lingering in Thalen’s chest. "Though given that we nearly blew the entire administrative wing into the lower catacombs, I’d say looking like a ghost is a minor penalty.""A minor penalty," Thalen echoed dryly, turning his head on the stiff pillow to better observe the way the afternoon light caught the dark circles beneath Zeyric’s eyes. "You collapsed like a felled timber right after hurling Malakor into a stone wall. If Professor Starwyn hadn't caught you, you’d have cracked your skull on the cobblestones.""And if you hadn't intercepted Malakor’s gravity spear with your own sternum, I wouldn't have had a functional nervous system left to collapse with," Zeyric retorted, his tone dropping the dry humor for something sharper, more immediate. He propped himself up on one elbow, ignoring his own

Chapter 40: Permanent Ink"I can move just fine," Thalen muttered, his voice raspy and dry as he tried to sit up, only for a sharp spasm of pain to rip across his chest. He hissed through his teeth, sinking back against the lumpy feather pillow with an ungraceful groan. "Though, I suppose my ribs disagree with my ambition.""I told you not to move," Zeyric replied, though a faint, tired smirk touched the corners of his mouth. "Unless you enjoy feeling like an iron anvil was dropped on your torso. Because trust me, I felt every single ounce of it.""You always have to have the last word, don't you?" Thalen glanced sideways, taking in the pale, worn-out state of his partner. The fierce, incandescent white mana that had shattered Malakor’s dome just hours ago had left Zeyric looking as though he had run a marathon through a furnace. "How are you holding up? Beyond the obvious fact that you look like a ghost who lost its sheet.""I've been better," Zeyric admitted, staring up at the vault
