Chapter 5: The Shattered Link

The door to Thalen’s suite didn't just open; it disintegrated. A wave of sickly violet energy ate through the reinforced oak, turning the wood to fine, grey ash that swirled in the sudden, freezing draft from the hallway.

Zeyric threw his arm up, shielding his eyes as the dust settled. "Thalen! Stay back!"

"Stay back?" Thalen’s voice was a low snarl. He stepped in front of Zeyric, his hand already glowing with a jagged, silver-blue light. "In my own room? I don't think so."

Standing in the jagged frame of the doorway wasn't a faceless assassin. It was Veyron, his Academy uniform scorched and his eyes rimmed with a manic, unnatural purple glow. Behind him stood three other students, their faces masks of cold, empty obedience. In Veyron’s hand was a curved obsidian dagger, the blade weeping a thick, black smoke.

"Veyron?" Zeyric choked out, his wand shaking. "What the hell is this? The gates... you did that?"

"The gates were just the opening act, Puddle-Boy," Veyron said, his voice sounding like two stones grinding together. He stepped over the threshold, the floorboards blackening under his boots. "The 'Year-End Trial' started early. Didn't you get the memo? It's a field exam now. A test of survival."

"You’re working with the rogue faction," Thalen said, his voice dangerously calm. "My father warned me there were rats in the ranks. I just didn't realize they were so bottom-shelf."

"Your father," Veyron spat, his face twisting. "Always about the House of Valerius. You think you're so special because you were born with a silver wand up your ass? You're nothing without that bond, Thalen. You’re sharing your soul with a charity case who can't even cast a basic flare."

"He’s ten times the mage you’ll ever be," Zeyric snapped, stepping out from behind Thalen. "And he didn't need a forbidden rod to prove it."

"Oh, I’m not here to argue with the help," Veyron laughed, a jagged, ugly sound. "I'm here to conduct a little experiment. They call this the 'Soul-Severing' curse. It's supposed to be impossible to survive. I wonder... if I rip the scholarship kid’s soul out, does the Prince feel the hole it leaves behind?"

"Don't you dare," Thalen hissed. The air in the room began to hum, the ozone scent of his lightning thickening until it tasted like copper on Zeyric’s tongue.

"Watch me," Veyron said.

He didn't use a wand. He threw the obsidian dagger into the air, and it hovered there, spinning. The purple light in his eyes flared, and the shadows in the room began to crawl toward the blade, feeding it.

"Zeyric, get to the balcony!" Thalen shouted, his hand gripping Zeyric’s shoulder for a split second—a touch that felt like a bolt of pure, desperate affection through the bond. "Go! Now!"

"I'm not leaving you!" Zeyric yelled back, planting his feet. "We do this together, remember? One soul!"

"You idiot, his target is you!" Thalen shoved Zeyric toward the window. "He can't kill me directly without the Council breathing down his neck, but if you die in an 'attack,' the bond snaps and I become a vegetable. It’s a coup, Zeyric! Move!"

"Too late," Veyron whispered.

He thrust his hands forward. The obsidian dagger didn't fly; it shattered into a thousand needles of black glass, all of them screaming through the air toward Zeyric’s chest.

Zeyric felt the world slow down. He tried to raise a shield, but his mana felt like lead in his veins. He saw the black needles, felt the cold, soul-deep void they carried. He closed his eyes, bracing for the end.

Thud.

The sound wasn't of glass hitting flesh. It was the sound of a body hitting the floor.

Zeyric opened his eyes. The room was silent.

Thalen was standing in front of him, his back arched, his arms spread wide as if he were trying to catch the wind. The black needles were gone. In their place, a web of pulsing, purple veins was spreading across Thalen’s white silk shirt, originating from his chest.

"Thalen?" Zeyric whispered, his heart stopping. "Thalen, no..."

Thalen’s knees buckled. He didn't fall gracefully. He collapsed like a puppet with its strings cut. Zeyric lunged forward, catching him before his head hit the marble, pulling him into his lap.

"No, no, no! Thalen, look at me!" Zeyric screamed.

Through the bond, it hit him.

It wasn't a flash of pain. It was a cold, sucking vacuum. It felt like someone had reached into Zeyric’s chest and was slowly, methodically, pulling his intestines out through his throat. He gasped, his own vision blurring as he felt Thalen’s life force—that rushing, silver river—begin to leak out into the floor.

"It... it's cold," Thalen rasped. His eyes were wide, the brilliant blue turning a dull, foggy grey. He reached up, his fingers trembling as they brushed Zeyric’s cheek. "Zeyric... run..."

"I'm not running! You arrogant prick, don't you dare die on me!" Zeyric’s tears hit Thalen’s face, hot and frantic. "Fight it! Use my mana! Take it all!"

"I can't... find it," Thalen whispered, his breath hitching. "The connection... it's breaking."

Veyron stepped closer, looking down at them with a look of bored triumph. "Look at that. The Great Valerius, dying for a peasant. My father is going to love this report. The curse is designed to distribute the damage, but since it's soul-based, it just creates a feedback loop. You’re both bleeding out now, and there’s nothing in this world that can stop it."

"I'll kill you," Zeyric growled, his voice sounding like an animal's. "I'll rip your heart out."

"You can barely stand, Puddle-Boy," Veyron mocked. "Enjoy the last few minutes of your life. It looks like it’s going to be a very... intimate goodbye."

Veyron turned and walked out, his cronies following, leaving the room to the silence of the dying.

Zeyric clutched Thalen tighter, his forehead pressed against Thalen’s. The bond was screaming now. It wasn't just mirroring Thalen’s fading pulse; it was trying to fuse them together in a desperate, final attempt to survive.

"Thalen, please," Zeyric sobbed. "Please, I just... I just found you. I just realized I... I can't do this without you."

"Zeyric..." Thalen’s voice was barely a thread of sound. "Last night... it was... the only time I felt... real."

"Don't talk like that! It's not over!"

Zeyric closed his eyes, searching deep within his own flickering spark. He didn't look for his own magic. He looked for the place where their souls met—that bridge they had built in the library, in the bed, in the heat of the night. He found it, but it was covered in that oily, purple rot of the curse.

"Take it," Zeyric whispered, pushing every ounce of his will into the bond. "Thalen, take my life. I don't want it if you're not there. Just take it and live."

"No," Thalen groaned, his body convulsing in Zeyric's arms. "I won't... kill you to... save myself."

"You don't have a choice!"

Zeyric leaned down, his lips crashing against Thalen’s in a kiss that tasted of salt and copper and impending death. He didn't care about the curse. He didn't care about the rogue faction. He poured his entire existence into that kiss, trying to shove his soul back into Thalen’s emptying chest.

The bond reacted.

But it didn't heal. It warped.

A low, guttural thrumming started in the air around them. The purple veins on Thalen’s skin began to glow, but the light was changing. It was turning from a sickly violet to a deep, forbidden, arterial red.

Zeyric felt a sudden, violent jolt in his chest. His heart stopped.

For a second, there was no sound. No breath. No pain.

He saw Thalen’s heart stop in the same moment. They were two statues carved from ice, frozen in a final, desperate embrace.

Then, the red light exploded.

It wasn't light, really. It was resonance. A sound so loud it was silent, a heat so hot it was cold. Zeyric felt his magic core crack, and then shatter. He felt Thalen’s core do the same. The two reservoirs of mana—Zeyric’s wild, unrefined spark and Thalen’s disciplined, silver lightning—bled into each other, mixing into something dark, heavy, and terrifyingly powerful.

"What... what is happening?" Zeyric tried to scream, but he had no lungs.

He was no longer Zeyric. He wasn't Thalen.

He was a storm of red mist and silver glass. He was the taste of sandalwood and the smell of ozone. He was the memory of a scholarship and the weight of a dynasty.

The world around them began to dissolve. The walls of the suite, the shattered furniture, the very air—everything turned to white noise.

I can feel you, a voice whispered in the void. It wasn't Zeyric's, and it wasn't Thalen's. It was both.

I'm right here, the other half answered. Don't let go.

The red glow intensified until it was all there was. The pain vanished, replaced by a terrifying, absolute stillness. Zeyric felt himself slipping away, his consciousness unraveling like a frayed rope. He reached out one last time, feeling Thalen’s hand—or was it his own?—grasping back with a strength that defied death.

And then, the void swallowed them whole.

Chapter 4: The Price of ProtectionThe world outside the stacks of the Grand Library ceased to exist. There was only the rough grain of the oak bookshelf against Zeyric’s back and the suffocating, glorious weight of Thalen pressing into him. Every time Thalen’s lips moved against his, Zeyric felt a double-hit of dopamine—his own, and the sharp, jagged rush of Thalen’s."Thalen, wait," Zeyric gasped, his hands tangling deeper into Thalen’s silver hair. "The librarian... someone will—""I locked the sector wards, Zeyric. Shut up," Thalen muttered against his neck, his voice vibrating through Zeyric’s very bones. "I can feel your heart trying to beat out of your chest. It’s making mine skip. Do you have any idea what that’s doing to me?""It’s doing the same thing to me!" Zeyric arched his back as Thalen’s teeth grazed his collarbone. "I can feel... god, Thalen, I can feel how much you want to ruin me. Chapter 3: Shared HeatThe walk from the locker rooms to the Grand Library was a silent, agonizing marathon. Every time Thalen’s stride faltered, Zeyric felt a phantom ache in his own knees. Every time Thalen took a sharp breath, Zeyric’s own lungs felt tight. The bond was no longer a theoretical concept; it was a living, breathing parasite that had burrowed into the marrow of their bones. The library was nearly empty, the towering shelves of ancient grimoires casting long, skeletal shadows across the mahogany tables. Thalen slammed a heavy tome titled Mana Conductivity and Soul-Resonance onto a desk, the sound echoing like a gunshot in the stillness."Sit," Thalen commanded, his voice tight. He didn't look at Zeyric. He didn't look at anything except the flickering candlelight."Are you serious right now?" Zeyric asked, his voice shaking as he pulled out a chair. "You’re just going to sit there and act like we weren’t just... like we didn't almost...""Almost nothing," Thalen snapped

Chapter 2: A Taste of AgonyThe silence in the corridor was suffocating, broken only by the sound of Thalen’s jagged breathing. He remained slumped against the doorframe, his fingers digging into the wood so hard his knuckles looked like white marble. Zeyric stayed on the floor, his own knees throbbing, but the pain felt strange—magnified and echoed, like a sound bouncing between two mirrors."Are you... are you okay?" Zeyric asked, his voice barely a whisper."Do I look okay?" Thalen spat, though the venom lacked its usual bite. He exhaled a shaky breath, slowly straightening his legs. "Every time you move, it’s like a ghost is tugging at my joints. When you fell... it felt like my own bones were hitting the stone.""I didn't mean to," Zeyric said, pushing himself up. He winced as the raw skin on his palms stung.Thalen hissed, clutching his own hands and staring at his palms as if expecting them to burst into flames. "Stop it. Stop feeling it.""I can't just turn off my nerves, Thal

  • Linked by Blood and Bone   Chapter 1: The Curse of Partnership

Chapter 1: The Curse of PartnershipThe air in the summoning chamber was thick with the smell of ozone and the metallic tang of failed expectations. Zeyric wiped a smudge of soot from his forehead, his knuckles white as he gripped his charred oak wand."Again, Zeyric," Professor Starwyn said, her voice echoing off the vaulted stone ceiling. "Focus on the core. Don't just throw mana at it like you’re tossing trash."Zeyric gritted his teeth, feeling the heat of thirty pairs of eyes on his back. "I’m trying, Professor. It’s just not... clicking.""Clicking?" A silken, mocking voice drifted from the front row. Thalen didn't even turn around; he just sat there, the sunlight hitting his silver-blonde hair like he was some kind of celestial being. "Maybe if you stopped trying to muscle the ether, it would actually listen to you. It's a dance, Zeyric. Not a bar fight.""Nobody asked for the commentary, Thalen," Zeyric snapped, his face flushing a deep, embarrassed red."Just trying to help t
