Chapter 4: The Price of Protection

The world outside the stacks of the Grand Library ceased to exist. There was only the rough grain of the oak bookshelf against Zeyric’s back and the suffocating, glorious weight of Thalen pressing into him. Every time Thalen’s lips moved against his, Zeyric felt a double-hit of dopamine—his own, and the sharp, jagged rush of Thalen’s.

"Thalen, wait," Zeyric gasped, his hands tangling deeper into Thalen’s silver hair. "The librarian... someone will—"

"I locked the sector wards, Zeyric. Shut up," Thalen muttered against his neck, his voice vibrating through Zeyric’s very bones. "I can feel your heart trying to beat out of your chest. It’s making mine skip. Do you have any idea what that’s doing to me?"

"It’s doing the same thing to me!" Zeyric arched his back as Thalen’s teeth grazed his collarbone. "I can feel... god, Thalen, I can feel how much you want to ruin me. It’s like a physical pressure."

Thalen pulled back just enough to look Zeyric in the eye, his gaze dark and predatory. "Then let me. I’m tired of fighting the bond. I’m tired of pretending I don't wake up every morning feeling your pulse instead of my own. My room. Now."

"We can't just—"

Before Zeyric could finish, Thalen grabbed his hand. A flash of silver light erupted between their palms, and the library vanished. The air turned from old parchment to expensive sandalwood and cold mountain air. They were in Thalen’s private dormitory—a suite that cost more than Zeyric’s entire village was worth.

Zeyric stumbled as they materialized, his knees hitting the thick, plush rug. "You just used a high-level blink spell inside the academy? Are you insane?"

"I’m a Valerius. I’ll pay the fine in the morning," Thalen said, his voice dropping an octave. He stepped toward Zeyric, shedding his formal cloak with a single, fluid motion. "Right now, I don't care about the rules. I care about the fact that your skin feels like it’s on fire, and because of this damn contract, mine is too."

Zeyric looked up, his breath hitching. "You’re trembling."

"Because you are," Thalen countered, reaching down to pull Zeyric up by his shirt. "Stop thinking, Zeyric. Just for tonight. Stop being the scholarship kid and the rival. Just be mine."

"Is that an order, Master Valerius?" Zeyric challenged, a smirk playing on his lips even as his pulse thundered.

"It’s a plea," Thalen whispered, and the honesty of it hit Zeyric harder than any kinetic blast.

They collided again, the bed catching them as they fell. The night became a blur of shared electricity. The Twin-Soul bond didn't just mirror pain; it acted as an amplifier for pleasure. Every time Zeyric ran his hands over Thalen’s lean muscles, he felt the ghost of his own touch on Thalen’s skin. Every moan that escaped Zeyric’s throat was echoed by the vibration in Thalen’s chest.

"It’s too much," Zeyric choked out, his eyes rolling back as Thalen’s fingers traced the sensitive skin of his inner thigh. "I can't tell where I end and you begin."

"That’s the point," Thalen breathed, his forehead resting against Zeyric’s. "Don't fight the loop. Feed it. Give me everything you’re feeling."

Zeyric did. He pushed his desire through the bond, a tidal wave of heat and longing. He felt Thalen’s response—a crushing, possessive need that made Zeyric’s vision white out. They moved together in a frantic, desperate rhythm, two souls trying to occupy the same space, until the world finally exploded in a supernova of silver light and shared ecstasy.

*

Morning light filtered through the heavy velvet curtains, casting long, golden streaks across the room. Zeyric woke up feeling heavier than usual, his body humming with a lingering warmth. He shifted, realizing he was tangled in silk sheets and Thalen’s long, pale limbs.

Thalen was still asleep, his face looking younger, softer without the mask of noble arrogance. Zeyric watched the steady rise and fall of his chest, feeling the rhythmic echo of Thalen’s heart in his own ribcage.

"I’m actually in his bed," Zeyric whispered to himself, a sense of vertigo hitting him. "This is going to be a disaster."

He carefully slid out from under Thalen’s arm, his feet hitting the cold marble floor. He needed his clothes. He needed to get back to his own dorm before the morning bells. As he scrambled to find his discarded tunic, his foot caught on a heavy, leather-bound book that had fallen off Thalen’s bedside table during the night.

It wasn't a textbook. It was a ledger, marked with the Valerius crest.

"What’s this?" Zeyric murmured. He shouldn't look. He knew he shouldn't look. But the bond gave him a prickle of unease—that greasy itch of a secret.

He flipped it open. His eyes scanned the pages, and his blood went cold.

First Quarter Trials: Examiner Vane. 500 Gold Crowns. Adjustment for Student #60 (Zeyric).

Mid-Term Alchemy: Professor Hallow. Rare Reagents Delivery. Grade Stabilization for Student #60.

Page after page. Dates, names, and amounts. Thalen hadn't just been watching Zeyric; he had been buying him.

"You’ve got to be kidding me," Zeyric hissed, his grip tightening on the ledger until the leather groaned.

"You weren't supposed to see that," a cold, tired voice said from the bed.

Zeyric spun around, the ledger held out like a weapon. Thalen was sitting up, his hair a mess, but his eyes were already sharp and defensive.

"You bribed them?" Zeyric’s voice shook. "The exams, the practicals... I thought I was actually getting better! I thought I was finally catching up!"

"You were getting better," Thalen said, sliding out of bed. He didn't bother to cover himself, standing with a raw, casual power. "But you weren't fast enough. The Academy has a minimum threshold, Zeyric. If you dropped below a C-average in the first month, they would have revoked your scholarship immediately."

"So you just bought my grades? Like I’m some kind of... of pet project?" Zeyric threw the ledger onto the bed. "I worked my ass off, Thalen! I stayed up until three in the morning every night studying while you were probably out at some gala!"

"I was in the library with you!" Thalen shouted, his voice cracking. "I was in the stacks, three rows down, making sure you didn't pass out from exhaustion! Do you think I enjoyed spending my inheritance on crooked professors?"

"Then why do it?" Zeyric stepped into Thalen’s space, his chest heaving. "Why not just let me fail? You hated me! You called me a handicap!"

"Because I knew where they’d send you!" Thalen grabbed Zeyric’s shoulders, his fingers digging in. "I read your file, Zeyric. I know about the 'reclamation program' in your home district. If you lose your scholarship, you don't just go back to being a farm boy. You get sold to the state mines to pay back the 'investment' of your early education."

Zeyric froze. The anger in his gut didn't vanish, but it was suddenly smothered by a cold, numbing fear. "How do you know about that?"

"My father runs the board that oversees the mines," Thalen whispered, his eyes searching Zeyric’s. "I’ve seen the kids they bring back. They don't last a year. I couldn't let that happen to you. Even when I hated you, I couldn't let you be destroyed by a system I’m supposed to inherit."

Zeyric felt a wave of nausea. "So this whole year... everything I achieved... it was all a lie?"

"No. Your magic is real, Zeyric. It’s just... unrefined. I was buying you time. That’s all." Thalen reached out, his thumb brushing Zeyric’s cheek. "I’m obsessed with you. I have been since the day you blew up that cauldron and laughed about it instead of crying. I couldn't bear the thought of you being silenced."

Zeyric pulled away, his head spinning. "I don't know what to do with that. You lied to me. You made me feel like I was finally worth something on my own, and it was just your money the whole time."

"You are worth something!" Thalen stepped closer. "The bond proved it! The ritual wouldn't have worked if our souls weren't compatible, Zeyric. You can't bribe the ether. You are my equal in every way that matters."

"The Council won't see it that way," Zeyric said, his voice hollow. "If they find this ledger, we’re both done. You for bribery, me for... for being a fraud."

"They won't find it," Thalen said firmly. "I’ll burn it. We just have to get through the trials, and then—"

BOOM.

The floor beneath them buckled. A deafening roar tore through the air, followed by the sound of shattering glass and screaming wards. The massive stone walls of the dormitory groaned, and dust rained down from the ceiling.

Zeyric stumbled, and Thalen caught him, both of them instantly dropping into combat stances. Through the bond, Zeyric felt a surge of adrenaline so sharp it felt like a physical sting.

"What was that?" Zeyric yelled over the ringing in his ears.

Thalen ran to the window, pulling the curtain back. His face went ash-white. "The perimeter gates... they’re gone."

"An attack? Who would attack the Academy?"

"Not the Academy," Thalen said, his voice trembling as he looked at the courtyard below. "Look at the signatures. That’s anti-soul magic. They’re using resonant dampeners."

Zeyric joined him at the window. Below, dark-clad figures were swarming the grounds, carrying strange, glowing obsidian rods. Everywhere a rod was planted, students nearby collapsed, clutching their chests.

"They’re targeting the Twin-Souls," Zeyric realized, his heart hammering in sync with Thalen’s. "They’re trying to rip the bonds apart."

"If they do that here, with the resonance this high..." Thalen looked at Zeyric, a look of pure terror in his eyes. "Zeyric, it won't just leave us as husks. It’ll tear us to pieces."

Another explosion rocked the building, closer this time. The door to the suite began to glow with a sickly purple light as someone on the other side started eating through the wards.

"Get your wand," Thalen commanded, his silver-blonde hair whipping around his face as his mana began to flare. "If we’re going down, we’re going down as one."

Zeyric gripped his charred oak wand, feeling the rushing tide of Thalen’s power merging with his own. "Good. Because I still have a lot of things to yell at you about."

"Survive this," Thalen smirked, though his hand was shaking, "and I’ll let you yell for the rest of our lives."

Chapter 5: The Shattered LinkThe door to Thalen’s suite didn't just open; it disintegrated. A wave of sickly violet energy ate through the reinforced oak, turning the wood to fine, grey ash that swirled in the sudden, freezing draft from the hallway.Zeyric threw his arm up, shielding his eyes as the dust settled. "Thalen! Stay back!""Stay back?" Thalen’s voice was a low snarl. He stepped in front of Zeyric, his hand already glowing with a jagged, silver-blue light. "In my own room? I don't think so."Standing in the jagged frame of the doorway wasn't a faceless assassin. It was Veyron, his Academy uniform scorched and his eyes rimmed with a manic, unnatural purple glow. Behind him stood three other students, their faces masks of cold, empty obedience. In Veyron’s hand was a curved obsidian dagger, the blade weeping a thick, black smoke."Veyron?" Zeyric choked out, his wand shaking. "What the hell is this? The gates... you did that?""The gates were just the opening act, Puddle-Boy

  • Linked by Blood and Bone   Chapter 3: Shared Heat

Chapter 3: Shared HeatThe walk from the locker rooms to the Grand Library was a silent, agonizing marathon. Every time Thalen’s stride faltered, Zeyric felt a phantom ache in his own knees. Every time Thalen took a sharp breath, Zeyric’s own lungs felt tight. The bond was no longer a theoretical concept; it was a living, breathing parasite that had burrowed into the marrow of their bones. The library was nearly empty, the towering shelves of ancient grimoires casting long, skeletal shadows across the mahogany tables. Thalen slammed a heavy tome titled Mana Conductivity and Soul-Resonance onto a desk, the sound echoing like a gunshot in the stillness."Sit," Thalen commanded, his voice tight. He didn't look at Zeyric. He didn't look at anything except the flickering candlelight."Are you serious right now?" Zeyric asked, his voice shaking as he pulled out a chair. "You’re just going to sit there and act like we weren’t just... like we didn't almost...""Almost nothing," Thalen snapped

Chapter 2: A Taste of AgonyThe silence in the corridor was suffocating, broken only by the sound of Thalen’s jagged breathing. He remained slumped against the doorframe, his fingers digging into the wood so hard his knuckles looked like white marble. Zeyric stayed on the floor, his own knees throbbing, but the pain felt strange—magnified and echoed, like a sound bouncing between two mirrors."Are you... are you okay?" Zeyric asked, his voice barely a whisper."Do I look okay?" Thalen spat, though the venom lacked its usual bite. He exhaled a shaky breath, slowly straightening his legs. "Every time you move, it’s like a ghost is tugging at my joints. When you fell... it felt like my own bones were hitting the stone.""I didn't mean to," Zeyric said, pushing himself up. He winced as the raw skin on his palms stung.Thalen hissed, clutching his own hands and staring at his palms as if expecting them to burst into flames. "Stop it. Stop feeling it.""I can't just turn off my nerves, Thal

  • Linked by Blood and Bone   Chapter 1: The Curse of Partnership

Chapter 1: The Curse of PartnershipThe air in the summoning chamber was thick with the smell of ozone and the metallic tang of failed expectations. Zeyric wiped a smudge of soot from his forehead, his knuckles white as he gripped his charred oak wand."Again, Zeyric," Professor Starwyn said, her voice echoing off the vaulted stone ceiling. "Focus on the core. Don't just throw mana at it like you’re tossing trash."Zeyric gritted his teeth, feeling the heat of thirty pairs of eyes on his back. "I’m trying, Professor. It’s just not... clicking.""Clicking?" A silken, mocking voice drifted from the front row. Thalen didn't even turn around; he just sat there, the sunlight hitting his silver-blonde hair like he was some kind of celestial being. "Maybe if you stopped trying to muscle the ether, it would actually listen to you. It's a dance, Zeyric. Not a bar fight.""Nobody asked for the commentary, Thalen," Zeyric snapped, his face flushing a deep, embarrassed red."Just trying to help t
