Chapter 8: Midnight Inquiries

"Step away from the desk," a crisp, low voice cut through the chemical haze of the ruined suite before either boy could draw a breath.

Zeyric spun around, his wand half-raised, only to lower it as Professor Starwyn stepped out from the shadows of the adjoining alcove, her heavy velvet robes entirely unstained by the falling white foam. Her dark eyes swept over the shattered windowpanes, the scorched floorboards, and finally landed on the raw, open link pulsing faintly between the two apprentices.

"Professor Starwyn?" Thalen said, automatically straightening his posture despite the ash coating his boots. "We didn't call for an inspection."

"Clearly," Starwyn replied, her heels clicking sharply against the cracked wood as she approached the center of the room. She bent down, picking up a stray fragment of the obsidian dagger Veyron had dropped during his retreat. The black smoke had curdled into a greasy film on the stone. "You missed your evening curfews, you've systematically dismantled the suite's structural warding, and you are currently bleeding into each other’s nervous systems. An impressive evening's work."

"Veyron broke in," Zeyric said defensively, taking a half-step forward. "He had some kind of violet charm—he wasn't even acting like himself. His skin was translucent."

"I am well aware of what Veyron was carrying," Starwyn interrupted, holding the dark glass fragment up to the flickering emergency light. "Because this dagger does not belong to a student. It belongs to the Blood-Weavers—a forgotten sect of radical blood-mages who used to rule the lower city before the academy’s foundations were even laid."

Thalen frowned, his blue eyes narrowing as the information clicked into place. "The Blood-Weavers? I thought they were executed during the founding wars."

"History is rarely as tidy as the textbooks pretend," Starwyn said grimly, letting the obsidian shard drop back onto the desk with a heavy clack. "Which brings me to a rather uncomfortable truth about where you are standing right now. Twenty years ago, I failed to protect a student who carried a soul-resonance bond remarkably similar to the one currently tying you two together."

Zeyric’s breath caught in his throat. "You mean... someone else survived this?"

"She didn't survive," Starwyn corrected, her voice dropping an octave, carrying a heavy weight that brooked no argument. "The bond consumed her within the moon cycle because they didn't know how to sever it. The truth is, this academy's entire foundational arch is built on volatile, uncontained soul-magic. The architecture itself feeds on these tethers."

Thalen stared at her, the haughty arrogance he usually wore like armor completely evaporating. "Are you saying this room isn't just ruined? Are you saying this bond is going to kill us?"

"I am saying," Starwyn said, stepping closer and locking eyes with both of them in turn, "that if you do not find a legitimate severing ritual within the next thirty days—before the next full moon cycle—the resonance will permanently fuse your nervous systems into a single, agonizing feedback loop. You will share a mind, a heartbeat, and eventually, a grave."

Silence slammed into the room, heavier and more suffocating than the chemical foam. Zeyric felt a cold bead of sweat roll down the back of his neck, and an instant later, he felt Thalen flinch as his counterpart processed the exact same sensation.

"A month?" Zeyric's voice cracked slightly, the sheer absurdity of it clashing with the absolute terror in Starwyn’s eyes. "We have to figure out how to un-fuse our souls in thirty days while the faculty is patrolling every hallway looking for violet magic?"

"The faculty is looking for you if you don't clean up this mess," Starwyn warned, turning toward the ruined doorway. "Do not go running into the catacombs tonight. The ward-hounds are out, and Malakor’s security detail is sweeping the lower levels. Stay put, share the cramped guest room in the upper dormitories if you must, and keep your heads down."

"Wait—how do we find a severing ritual if we aren't allowed to look?" Thalen demanded, stepping forward, his hands clenching into fists at his sides.

"You don't," Starwyn said over her shoulder as she stepped out into the dim, chemical-fogged corridor. "You survive. Try not to disappoint me."

The heavy iron door swung shut behind her with a dull thud, leaving Thalen and Zeyric alone in the wreckage of the suite. The adrenaline that had kept them upright during the attack began to drain away, replaced by the crushing, heavy reality of the ticking clock hanging over their heads.

Zeyric let out a long, shaky breath, running a hand through his ash-dusted hair. "Thirty days. She really knows how to brighten a room, doesn't she?"

"Shut up, Zeyric," Thalen muttered, though there was no real heat in it anymore. He reached up, pressing two fingers against his temple where a dull, persistent throbbing had just begun—the exact spot where Zeyric was feeling the stress of the impending doom. "She said we have to move to the guest room. Grab your satchel."

"My satchel is under three feet of glass and ash," Zeyric pointed out, gesturing to the collapsed shelving unit in the corner.

"Then dig it out," Thalen snapped, crossing his arms as he watched Zeyric wade through the glittering shards of windowpane. "We are not spending another minute breathing this ozone. Move."

They worked in tense, hurried silence, throwing what little remained of their unblemished belongings into a single canvas bag. Every time their shoulders brushed in the cramped, ruined space, a jolt of raw static electricity sparked between their skin, a physical reminder of the invisible tether binding them closer than brothers, closer than enemies, and dangerously close to destruction.

When they finally stepped out into the hallway, the cool night air hit them like a slap, carrying the distant, hollow echo of faculty patrol boots marching somewhere down the hall.

"If we get caught by the ward-hounds tonight, whose fault is it?" Zeyric whispered, keeping his steps light as they navigated the shadows of the upper corridors toward the cramped guest quarters Starwyn had mentioned.

"Yours, obviously," Thalen whispered back, his voice steady despite the tremor in his fingers. "You're the one who dragged me into this mess in the first place."

"Me?" Zeyric scoffed, throwing a sideways look at him. "You’re the one who couldn't handle a simple ward-breaker without blowing up half the dormitory wing."

"Keep walking, Puddle-Boy."

"Don't call me that."

They slipped into the narrow, suffocatingly small guest room just as a pair of heavy faculty boots rounded the far corner, the bright amber glow of a search-rune sweeping across the outer wall outside their door. Zeyric threw his weight against the heavy wooden panel, clicking the crude iron latch into place just in time.

The room was barely larger than a storage closet, featuring a single narrow cot, a cracked basin, and a tiny, high-set window that looked out over the darkened academy grounds. There was no desk, no fireplace, and certainly no room for two proud apprentices accustomed to sprawling suites.

Thalen dropped his canvas bag onto the floor with a heavy thud and sat down heavily on the edge of the cot, his head in his hands. The sheer physical toll of the bond, combined with Starwyn’s chilling ultimatum, seemed to finally break through his polished, aristocratic exterior.

Zeyric stood awkwardly near the door for a moment, watching the rigid line of Thalen’s shoulders. The silence in the small room was deafening, far heavier than the noise of the exploding glass had been.

"Hey," Zeyric said quietly, stepping forward and dropping his own bag beside the bed.

Thalen didn't look up, his voice muffled by his hands. "If we're going to share this miserable excuse for a bed, stop pacing. It makes my chest hurt."

"I'm not pacing," Zeyric said, though he stopped moving anyway. He sat down on the hard wooden floorboards right beside the cot, leaning his back against the rough plaster wall. "We'll figure it out. The ritual, the Blood-Weavers, all of it."

"You heard Starwyn," Thalen said, finally raising his head. His ice-blue eyes looked exhausted, the fierce arrogance replaced by a raw, naked vulnerability that startled Zeyric. "Twenty years ago, a student died from this. What makes you think we're special enough to beat it?"

"Because she didn't have us," Zeyric said, offering a small, crooked smirk that didn't quite reach his eyes. "She only had herself. We've got twice the mana pool and twice the stubbornness."

Thalen let out a dry, humorless breath that sounded almost like a laugh, leaning back against the edge of the mattress to look down at Zeyric. For a long moment, neither of them spoke, the air between them thickening with something entirely different from the ozone and ash of the ruined suite.

"Don't get killed in your sleep, Puddle-Boy," Thalen murmured softly, the old insult carrying a strange, new weight.

"You first, Aristocrat," Zeyric replied, closing his eyes as the shared rhythm of their heartbeats finally began to slow down in the dark.

Outside the tiny high window, the amber light of the faculty patrols faded away into the mist, leaving the academy wrapped in a deceptive, fragile silence. But beneath the stone floors, deep within the forgotten catacombs, the violet energy of Veyron’s curse continued to pulse and grow, waiting for the moment they would finally step down into the dark.

Chapter 45: Panic Room"The hinge is finally shifting, but so is the entire foundation," Zeyric hissed, his boots sliding another inch across the grit-covered floor as the heavy iron grate shrieked against centuries of accumulated grime. "If this stone arch collapses on us, write a very flattering obituary about how I was always right.""I will write nothing of the sort," Thalen snapped back, planting his palm harder against Zeyric’s back to lend his own weight to the effort. The physical exertion instantly bled through their connection, making Thalen’s breath hitch in his own throat in a mirror of Zeyric’s strain. "If the arch collapses, we die together under three tons of masonry, and your ghost will still be complaining about my choice of reading material.""Only because your reading material has led us directly into a pitch-black subterranean void that smells intensely of wet iron and very old mistakes," Zeyric muttered. With one final, desperate heave, he threw his entire weight

"And I refuse to spend our first week of academic rehabilitation swimming through old ink and discarded quills.""Keep your weight centered or the leverage is entirely useless," Thalen shot back, planting his palm flat against Zeyric’s shoulder blade to steady him. The sudden tactile contact sent a familiar, low-voltage thrum racing along their shared soul-bond, instantly syncing their breathing. "And stop complaining about the sewer line. You lived in the outer slums for half your life; a little drainage water should feel remarkably like home.""There is a vast difference between municipal runoff and the historical accumulation of two hundred years of delinquent wizard apprentices," Zeyric grunted, his muscles strai

Chapter 43: The Library’s Secret"If Librarian Thomas catches us down here with an iron poker, he’s going to suspend us until our hair turns gray," Zeyric whispered, his hand clamping tightly around the handle of the rusted tool as the heavy iron gate gave a loud, metallic shriek. "And considering my hair is already half-ruined by your dismal locking-picking skills, I’d prefer not to push our luck.""My lock-picking skills are entirely adequate for a restricted academic vault that hasn't seen a fresh grease application since the second age," Thalen shot back, leaning his weight against the cold stone wall just behind the restricted grimoire section. "And keep your voice down. The acoustics in this library are designed to amplify treasonous whispering.""It wouldn't be treason if we were actually stealing something useful instead of hunting for a mysterious floor grate based on a cracked margin note," Zeyric muttered, though he wedged the tip of the poker into the seam of the flagstone

Chapter 42: The Thesis Assignment"Stop moving before you tear your stitches," Thalen said, though his own right hand instinctively rose to press against his bandaged ribs as a sympathetic twinge flared through the bond."I'm not moving, I'm adjusting," Zeyric shot back, his dark eyes flashing with stubborn defiance as he propped himself higher on his elbow. "And stop wincing. Every time you grimace, my shoulder feels like it's being pulled out of its socket all over again.""Then perhaps you should lie still and stop broadcasting your complaints directly into my prefrontal cortex," Thalen muttered, though despite his sharp words, his gaze softened as he reached across the narrow gap between their cots, his fingers brushing against Zeyric’s knuckles. "Are you actually okay?""I’m alive, which is more than I expected when Malakor’s dome dropped," Zeyric murmured, his defiance melting away under the quiet gravity of Thalen’s touch. He let his hand slide upward, intertwining his fingers

Chapter 41: A New Normal"A ghost who lost its sheet is remarkably accurate," Zeyric muttered, shifting slightly on the narrow infirmary cot with a soft wince that mirrored the dull ache still lingering in Thalen’s chest. "Though given that we nearly blew the entire administrative wing into the lower catacombs, I’d say looking like a ghost is a minor penalty.""A minor penalty," Thalen echoed dryly, turning his head on the stiff pillow to better observe the way the afternoon light caught the dark circles beneath Zeyric’s eyes. "You collapsed like a felled timber right after hurling Malakor into a stone wall. If Professor Starwyn hadn't caught you, you’d have cracked your skull on the cobblestones.""And if you hadn't intercepted Malakor’s gravity spear with your own sternum, I wouldn't have had a functional nervous system left to collapse with," Zeyric retorted, his tone dropping the dry humor for something sharper, more immediate. He propped himself up on one elbow, ignoring his own

Chapter 40: Permanent Ink"I can move just fine," Thalen muttered, his voice raspy and dry as he tried to sit up, only for a sharp spasm of pain to rip across his chest. He hissed through his teeth, sinking back against the lumpy feather pillow with an ungraceful groan. "Though, I suppose my ribs disagree with my ambition.""I told you not to move," Zeyric replied, though a faint, tired smirk touched the corners of his mouth. "Unless you enjoy feeling like an iron anvil was dropped on your torso. Because trust me, I felt every single ounce of it.""You always have to have the last word, don't you?" Thalen glanced sideways, taking in the pale, worn-out state of his partner. The fierce, incandescent white mana that had shattered Malakor’s dome just hours ago had left Zeyric looking as though he had run a marathon through a furnace. "How are you holding up? Beyond the obvious fact that you look like a ghost who lost its sheet.""I've been better," Zeyric admitted, staring up at the vault
