Chapter 4

Author: AAA Builder
Lena's POV

Two weeks later, the college admission results were officially released, and the living room erupted.

Mom slapped her thigh, tears of excitement filling her eyes. "Mandy got in! It's not one of the state's top colleges, but it's still a good school!"

Ian patted Mandy on the head and said proudly, "Mandy, I told you you'd surprise everyone this time!"

The doorbell rang, and Zeke walked in carrying a large bouquet of baby's breath.

He walked right past me and placed the flowers in Mandy's arms.

He said to her, "Mandy, the college I chose is right next to yours. If you ever need anything, just call me."

Mandy held the flowers and shyly leaned against Mom. "Thanks, Mom, Ian, and Zeke."

Mom finally turned to me, as if she had just remembered I was there. "Lena, what about you? Have you checked yours?"

The smile vanished from Ian's face, replaced by a solemn expression.

"Mom, I just checked for her." He paused. "Lena didn't get into any of them."

The living room fell silent.

Mom was stunned. "What do you mean she didn't get in? Wasn't she the top student in the state?"

Mandy's eyes widened as she covered her mouth. "What? How could Lena…"

Ian held up his phone and shook it. "What's the point of always being better than Mandy? When it mattered most, Lena still couldn't come through."

Zeke smiled knowingly. "Mandy really knows how to surprise everyone. You outdid Lena this time. Good for you!"

Mandy laughed gleefully, then spoke as if she were trying to be thoughtful. "Mom, don't be too hard on Lena. I already checked. There are still openings for students repeating senior year at our old high school.

"Since we're heading to school today to tell the teachers my good news, we can get Lena signed up to repeat senior year while we're there."

Mom kept nodding as she pointed a finger at my face. "Lena, you've gotten way too full of yourself. Let this teach you a lesson!"

Mandy walked over and gently tugged at my sleeve. "Lena, it's okay. There's nothing embarrassing about taking another year. You're smart. I'm sure you'll get into a good college next time."

Third-Person POV

Half an hour later, they all headed to the high school.

When they reached the hallway outside the school office, Mandy's homeroom teacher warmly greeted them and congratulated her.

Several classmates passing by stopped when they saw Mandy and the others.

"Lena didn't get in? The top student in the state got rejected from all the places she applied to?"

"I heard her college choices were ridiculous. She's known for being a science whiz, yet she applied to Branford University's literature program. What made her think she had a chance?"

"She really got too full of herself. Did she seriously think she could do anything and get away with it?"

Mandy stopped.

She sighed and said to the classmates beside her in a deeply sympathetic tone, "Lena just set her sights too high. She always wants the best of everything. If she'd played it safe, this wouldn't have happened. If only she were more grounded like me."

Zeke stood beside her and remained silent.

He didn't join in or defend Lena. He just stood by and watched as she became the school's laughingstock.

Lena's mom, Amber Tully, couldn't wait any longer and pushed open the school office door.

"Ms. Zimmer, Lena didn't get into college this time! She's too ashamed to even come to school," Amber said. "I'd like to sign her up to repeat senior year. What do we need to do?"

Cara Zimmer was writing at her desk. At those words, her pen suddenly stilled.

"Lena didn't get into college?" she asked incredulously.

Cara's expression turned strangely serious as she looked at everyone before her.

She said slowly, "Lena was accepted into Branford University's literature program."

Lena's POVAs soon as I finished speaking, two police cars came speeding up to the south gate of Branford University, their lights flashing.Several uniformed officers pushed through the crowd and walked over. "Who called the police?"I raised my hand. "I did. Someone is defaming me. They also changed my college application without my permission. I want to file a report."Ian frantically waved his hands. "Officer, there's been a misunderstanding! She's making all of this up. She's my sister. Why would I ever change her application? She's just trying to frame me."Mom rushed over and grabbed an officer's leg, wailing. "Officer, my daughter isn't quite right in the head. She got into college, yet she's still accusing her own brother. Please, don't believe a word she says! If there's no evidence, this is a false accusation!"Ian seized on that and shouted, "If you can't prove it, it's defamation!"Watching him desperately try to save himself, I felt nothing but pity. "You want proo

Academic fraud, get off campus!"Mom sat beneath the banner, slapping her thighs as she wailed. "Everyone, take a look! This is one of this year's new students, Lena Stroud!"She spent all of high school focused on science. How could she possibly get into Branford University's literature program? She must have pulled some strings to get that spot!"New students, parents, and people filming on their phones crowded around us.Camera flashes kept going off.Ian held up a megaphone and shouted, "Lena just can't stand seeing her own sister do well. Lena's POVAt that moment, I was on a train heading north. My phone kept buzzing as message after message popped up."Lena, where the hell are you? Get back here right now!""So you think you're too good for us now? Does getting into Branford University mean you don't need your family anymore? Is this what all that studying taught you?""Lena, Mom's gotten sick because of you. Even if you're mad at me, you can't just ignore Mom!"I stared at the insulting messages without a flicker of emotion.I selected them all, deleted them, and blocked all of their numbers. When I arrived in Branford, Luke was waiting for me at the station. "Welcome to Branford, Lena."He casually took my suitcase from me. "For the next four years, we'll be classmates in the same program again."After we got my things settled, Luke took me to a nearby restaurant.I picked up my glass and looked at him. "Luke, thank you. Third-Person POVZeke suddenly stepped forward and planted both hands firmly on the desk."That's impossible!" he said. "She's strong in science. Her applications were rejected because she didn't even pass the initial screening. How could she possibly get into Branford University's literature program?"Cara let out a humorless laugh. She turned the computer screen toward them and pulled up the admissions office's records."It's right there in black and white. See for yourself," she said. She pointed to the row marked in red as accepted in the system. "Branford University's literature program. Accepted. You think these records are fake?"Amber stood there with her mouth open, unable to say a word.Mandy was so frantic she could barely get the words out. "No! That's impossible! It doesn't make any sense. How could someone with a science background get accepted into one of the country's top literature programs? How did she even get in?"Cara snapped the laptop shut. "You should be
