Chapter 3

Autor: Sweet Beet
Mabel's phone rang persistently, and she finally answered it. Her expression changed drastically, and she immediately slammed on the brakes.

I was completely caught off guard and lurched forward, immediately hitting my forehead against the dashboard.

"Dusty, I have an emergency I need to tend to at the company," Mabel said anxiously to me. "Can you go back home by yourself?"

I looked at the comments before me.

[I'm going to puke. How many times is Mabel going to use the company as an excuse?]

[It's clearly Clyde who called her and lied about being in a car accident. That's why she's anxious to rush over at once.]

Clyde again.

A sharp, numbing pain shot through my heart.

Mabel became increasingly agitated when I wasn't responding. She got out of the car and opened my door instead.

"It's very urgent. I need to go and take care of it now so I can go on the trip with you without any worries. Be good and listen to me, Dusty."

She didn't seem to notice at all that there was a large bump on my forehead. I did my best to keep my tears at bay, refusing to let them fall, as I got out of the car.

"Go, then."

My voice was choked with emotion, betraying my current state of mind.

But Mabel had already impatiently gone back to the driver's seat. She slammed the door shut, started the engine, and sped off."

I watched her car quickly merge into traffic and disappear, and my tears finally fell.

It began to drizzle. Perhaps even the heavens were weeping over the death of our ten-year love story.

I walked back home through the rain, letting the downpour disguise the sorrowful tears on my face.

Mabel didn't come home that night. She just sent me a text message saying that she had to go on a last-minute business trip for two days, but she would definitely be back by the evening before our trip, and we'd then fly off to Prancera together.

I had nothing to say about her lies anymore. Instead, I spent the next two days packing up everything in the villa that belonged to me.

As for the 99 love letters she wrote to me, the first gift she bought me with her first paycheck, and the vows we wrote to each other during our wedding night… They used to be things that I cherished with my life, but now, they belonged only in the trash.

Two days later, half the villa was empty. I sat on the couch with the divorce agreement in hand, waiting for Mabel to come home.

Instead, I got a test message from Clyde.

"Let's meet up, Dustin Wright."

We met up at Bluescott Cafe.

Clyde looked flashy, dressed like a peacock. He was also wearing the diamond watch and sapphire cufflinks that Mabel bought for me days ago.

He looked smug and arrogant as he gloated, "Mabes said that I suited them better than you."

I stirred the coffee in my mug and remained calm. "You do know that these items are considered marital assets, right? I can always make you return them anytime I want."

Clyde froze. Then, he said, "What's the point of holding on to an empty title as Mabel's husband, Dustin? How long has it even been since the last time she slept with you?

"Have you ever thought that maybe she's already sick of you? You'd better disappear from her life if you know what's best for you. Make way for someone else instead."

I looked at Clyde and grinned. "Sure. I'll make way for you. Go and tell Mabel now that I'll be waiting for her here with a divorce agreement. I dare you."

Clyde fell silent once again.

I knew that he'd never have the guts to do it. He only dared to provoke me behind Mabel's back.

I had to admit that he was young and naive, and anyone could see through his thoughts almost immediately. Yet, his youthful physique and stamina were undoubtedly what had attracted Mabel in the first place.

I got up and left, but not before giving him one last piece of advice.

"Nobody can stay young forever, but there will always be someone younger. Since you've already slept with her, you should try getting more out of her while you still can instead of being so stupid as to provoke me now."

The comments that appeared before me were full of cheers and praise.

[Dustin's right! He's the male lead! He doesn't have to care about competing with others!]

[Hurry up and leave, Dustin! I can't wait to see Mabel crawling back to you on her knees, begging you to come back!]

When I got home, I placed the signed divorce agreement on the table, grabbed my packed suitcases, and took a cab straight to the airport.

This was my goodbye to Mabel and the ten years we shared together.

If I got together with Brenda, she would probably get sick of me very soon.It was just like my relationship with Mabel. We used to be so in love, but our relationship ultimately failed to withstand the passage of time.Maybe Mabel really did still love me now, but the purity of those feelings was gone.Brenda answered my question earnestly. "Just like you said, Dusty, we've never been together. You still don't believe me, no matter how much I say I love you and won't change my feelings toward you, because you're using Mabel as a point of reference the whole time."I just want to tell you that my approach to love is the same as yours. I'm not willing to compromise or just settle. Even if my love for you changes one day, I will choose to be honest with you about it instead of hurting you by cheating on you."I met her burning, sincere gaze, and lowered my head, somewhat unable to respond."I still need time, Brenda. I'm sorry, but I can't give you my answer just yet."Brenda smil

I looked Mabel straight in the eye and made every word clear."But I don't miss you at all. Every time I think of you, I'm only reminded of you cheating on me with Clyde in the restroom behind my back."When I was lying in the hospital after the car crash, you abandoned me and eagerly went to see Clyde just to sleep with him. Yes, we were together for ten years, but you even got the date of our tenth anniversary wrong! Just admit it, Mabel. You don't love me anymore."Mabel shook her head as tears rolled down her cheeks. "No, that's not true! I love you, Dusty! I've always loved you… I just… I just made a mistake at that time…"Brenda suddenly grabbed Mabel by her collar and slapped her hard across the face."Do you even remember what you promised me back then, Mabel Landry? And you still went and cheated on Dustin! I swear I'm going to knock some sense into that thick head of yours!"Brenda kept slapping Mabel again and again, and Mabel couldn't even defend herself.I realized

Because of Brenda's promise, I found myself checking her profile picture every year—whether intentionally or not—to see if she'd changed her profile picture.I genuinely hoped that she could find someone she loved and settle down with him soon instead of ending up all alone. But years passed, and her profile picture remained unchanged. My decision to come to Prance City had been made in a fit of grief and anger after learning about Mabel's affair. I hadn't thought too much about it at that time. I just wanted a place to vent and clear my head.I also hadn't decided whether I was going to accept Brenda's feelings. She obviously sensed this, so she didn't press me for any answers. She just spent her days keeping me company and trying to cheer me up.Yet, the more she did this, the more guilty I felt. After taking photos, Brenda then told me that she'd just bought two bottles of wine that morning and invited me to her place for a wine tasting.I looked at her with guilt in my eyes.

Clyde was escorted into the villa by the bodyguards. He was on the verge of panic, but he immediately feigned innocence as soon as he saw Mabel and even tried to pull her into his arms."Mabes, you could've just called me if you wanted to see me again. Why did you have to get the bodyguards to drag me here like this?"Mabel grabbed him by his neck and glared icily into his eyes. "What did you say to Dustin? Why did he leave?"Clyde knew that he would definitely be in huge trouble if Mabel found out that he had provoked me that day. He quickly plastered a fawning smile on his lips and said, "But I've never even met him, Mabes! How could I possibly have said anything to him?"Mabel's mind was completely occupied with thoughts of me. She didn't have time to play dumb with him. She tightened her grip around his neck and growled, "Tell me everything you said to Dusty at Bluescott Cafe that afternoon. Don't you dare miss a single word. If not, don't blame me for what I'll do to you."

It was 8:00 pm by the time Mabel woke up, rubbing her head from the hangover. However, she was instantly jolted awake as soon as she saw the time on the wall. She then hurriedly got dressed and ran out of the bedroom.Clyde, who was next to her, quickly tried to grab her and stop her from leaving."I made dinner, Mabes. It's your favorite grilled oysters. Have some before you go.Mabel pushed Clyde's hands away. "No. It's late. I must go back to be with Dusty."She had initially planned to go back earlier in the day, but Clyde insisted that she stay for lunch. Maybe it was the alcohol, but they went back to rolling in the sheets after lunch. Then, she fell asleep right after and didn't wake up until now.A strong sense of unease welled up inside her. She was desperate to go back and see me.Suddenly, she caught sight of the diamond watch on Clyde's wrist, and she gripped his arm immediately in a death grip."This is a gift I bought for Dusty. Who gave you permission to wear it?
