Chapter 3

Author: Goldie Lane
Asher stood up abruptly and rushed toward my side.

He helped me up and looked very worried.

“What’s wrong? Why did you throw up blood?”

He raised his hand and wiped the blood on the corner of my mouth with his thumb.

“I’ll take you to the hospital.”

As he said that, he wanted to help me up to my feet.

I pushed his hand away and shrank back to the chair.

“There’s no need. I’m fine.

“I’m just feeling a little feverish these few days, and my gums are bleeding.”

He looked down with intense eyes at me.

“How is it possible for you to throw up this much blood from a mere gum bleed?”

I forced a smile.

“It’s true.

“I know my own health well. I don’t have to go to the hospital.”

He stared at me for a few seconds before slowly letting my hand go.

My mother and Luna were looking at him. They were as shocked as he was.

Luna immediately came back to her senses. She held Asher’s arm and led him back to his seat with a smile.

“Asher’s too kind.

“Whenever he sees stray animals on the side of the road, he would feed them.

“He can’t stand the sight of anyone suffering.”

My mother served me food and said, “Why are you eating so fast?

“Slow down, no one is taking your food from you.”

I hung my head in silence.

Luna rested her head against Asher’s shoulder as she asked sweetly, “Asher, we’ve been together for so long. When are you going to marry me?”

Asher peered down at her and smiled. “As long as you’re willing, I’ll marry you at any time.”

Luna poked him shyly.

Then, she smiled at me.

“Luna, you can be my bridesmaid by then.”

I dug my fingernails into my palm and forced myself to nod.

“Alright.”

I had also mentioned marriage many times.

On the first Valentine’s Day after I graduated, I had asked Asher when we would get married.

He said there was no rush. We had just graduated, so he wanted to wait for another two years.

I asked again in the second year.

He said his career was not on track yet.

I no longer asked in the third year.

It was the fourth year when I brought Asher back to meet my family.

I just wanted to let him have a look at the place I grew up in before I died.

The doctor said that once I started to throw up blood, it meant that the tumor was already pressing against my vital organs.

I had three days to a week left to live.

I knew that I did not have much more time left.

Luna dragged Asher back to the bedroom as she said she wanted to choose a bridal shop.

I sat before the dining table and ate the rest of my food in small bites.

My mother glanced at me, and she felt a little sorry for me.

She went into the kitchen and then came out with a glass of fruit juice.

“Drink it while it’s fresh.”

I lowered my head and took a sip. I felt the warmth in my stomach as I teared up.

My mother softened her voice.

“Do you still feel ill?

“How about I accompany you to the hospital tomorrow?”

I shook my head and smiled.

“Mom, I’m fine.”

It felt so nice.

I finally had a glass of fruit juice that was specially made for me.

My mother was quiet for a while before slowly saying, “Don’t hurt yourself on purpose just to get our attention in the future.

“There are many fishes in the sea. Since you’ve promised to let Luna have Asher, you shouldn’t snatch him back from her.

“Luna isn’t as headstrong as you, and she would never take anything that belongs to you. Since she requested it, it only means that she really likes him.”

I held the glass as I felt my body getting colder.

She was right. Luna never fought with me over anything.

It was because she always got what she wanted.

Luna was loved just for her existence. Everyone was willing to give her everything.

As for me, what I fought so hard to get were her leftovers.

I stared at my mother’s back and suddenly recalled a winter from years ago. At that time, Luna was having the flu. My mother prepared a ginger shot and fed her by the spoonful. She carefully fed Luna so that no ginger juice would dribble down. I hid behind the door, as I did not dare to go in. I was also having the flu. I found it hard to breathe, and my throat was burning up. However, I did not dare to say anything. I was afraid my mother would lose her patience if I mentioned it. She would scold me and thought I was fighting for her attention. In the end, she finally saw me when she turned around. She was momentarily stunned as she waved me over. I was delighted. I ran over and waited for her to feed me too. However, she passed me the empty bowl and gestured dismissively. “Petra, I can’t leave Luna now. Wash the bowl and refill the kettle on the stove.”I held that bowl and froze. There were still some juices left. I secretly licked it, and it was so sp

On the day of my funeral, it was raining. It rained for the whole day, just like tears that never dried. My mother said my funeral had to be grand. She spent half of her savings on it. Luna did not stop her. She just supported her in the funeral arrangements. Her eyes were swollen, and she was a lot quieter than before. Asher ordered the best coffin, and he chose a good spot in the graveyard with the most sunlight. He said that I was afraid of the cold, and I would always curl up when I slept in the winter. I would only rest well if there was sunlight. Someone asked who Asher was. He stepped forward and told everyone that he was my husband. My mother started crying when she heard that. She turned around to wipe her tears away. All my relatives showed up on the day of my burial. I stood beside my tombstone and looked at my name carved on the marble. Luna stood before my grave. She was holding a bunch of flowers, and she slowly placed them on my grave. She loo

Asher carried me out of the bridal shop. He walked very slowly. Even though he was covered in sweat, he was unwilling to rest. My mother stumbled behind him. Luna supported her so she would not fall over. Luna’s make-up was ruined from her tears. Asher walked and kept staring at my face. “Petra, do you know? I still remember your face when you pass me the love letter. “You were pacing back and forth before the library entrance. You were holding the letter so hard before placing it on my desk. Then, you blushed and ran off.”He suddenly laughed. “When I opened the letter, you hadn’t even written a single word. “You wrote and erased it, and you repeated it so many times. In the end, you chose to not say anything.“I thought to myself, ‘How silly was this young lady?’”I listened as I immersed myself in the same memory. I smiled. As I smiled, I started to cry. He continued walking, and his voice became softer. “Then, you pursued me for an entire semester. “You

Asher kneeled down before me and reached out his hand. He lightly caressed my cold cheeks, and he felt the coldness spreading from his palm to his limbs. He kept tracing my features. The face that he looked at for four years became extremely quiet and unfamiliar. Asher was overwhelmed by immense grief and pain. He felt as though he no longer had any strength in his body. Even on his knees, he was swaying. He stumbled forward, and his forehead landed on my shoulder. Asher’s voice was extremely hoarse. “Silly Petra, why didn’t you tell us that you’re sick? Why did you bear the pain alone?”He held my cold fingers, as if he would be able to warm them up. “You must’ve been suffering all this while!“I’m a horrible person. How could I treat you like that?”He held my hand many times. His hands were a lot warmer than mine during winters. In the library, he would try to warm my hands in his. When it was summer, he did not like to hold my hand because of the hot weathe

My mother launched forward and grabbed the doctor’s sleeve. She begged him.“Doctor, please save my daughter!” I sighed. “Mom, it’s no use. Don’t do this.” I looked at my headstrong mother begging the doctor to save me. I felt an indescribable pain in my heart. When Luna changed into the wedding gown and walked out, it was completely empty in the corridor. She followed the noise and appeared with a smile on her face. “Mom, Asher, what are you doing here?”Luna walked in from the corner and saw the doctor and our crying mother. Asher was standing against the wall. He looked as though he was an empty shell. Luna stopped in her tracks. The smile slowly disappeared from her face. Her throat tightened. “Mom, what’s wrong? What happened? Why are you crying?”My mother hid her face in her hands as she sobbed. She was trembling violently and could not say a single word. Luna turned to look at Asher. Asher looked away and wiped the tears from his eyes. Luna’s fa

  • Lonely In The World   Chapter 5

My mother walked forward with a pale face as she stared at the scene in disbelief. She wanted to help me up from the floor with her trembling hands. However, I was completely limp, as though I was just a puppet. She could not move me after two attempts. Her voice became high-pitched from anxiousness. “Petra, I’m here. What’s wrong with you?“Don’t be afraid, I’m here.” I did not know why my soul had not disappeared after I died. I stood beside her and helplessly watched the scene. My mother was still shaking me. She sounded more and more anxious. “Petra, open your eyes! Look at me!” She finally realized she could not carry me. She turned around and yelled at Asher. “Call an ambulance! Quick, call it!” It was then Asher came to his senses. He took out his phone. His fingers were trembling so violently he could barely press on the right numbers. After he ended the call, he pushed my mother aside and kneeled down. My mother screamed and started to struggle.
