Zerah

The drive back to my home, if one could call it that, seemed to span an eternity in the silence. My hands were tightly clenched around the steering wheel.

The echoes of the panic I'd felt in the parking lot earlier still rang through me. I couldn't deny that I was slightly shaken, but it wasn't jarring.

Not when i'd expected it. Not when I'd already been warned.

FLASHBACK: THE COFFEE SHOP

I stood up to leave when Elena suddenly grabbed my arm.

“Wait,” she said, her voice more urgent. My breath hitched as she pulled me back, leaning in.

“Sit down.” She whispered an urgency in her tone that made me alarmed.

What was wrong?

My gut coiled in anxiety as I obeyed.

“There's no way he doesn't know about this meeting. With the people following me, he… he'll probably have predicted why I'm here.” she said, her expression shifting into something unreadable.

“If he knows, then he might go after you. He might try to take...” she trailed off, but the insinuation was clear.

RykerShock and awe were written on their faces after my words. Still I could see the doubts as they looked at each other, unsure.“I’m not a puppet. Have never been, ” I added. “This company has always been important to me and I would never let anything or anyone get in the way of it thriving. I know what I'm doing. Let Jason know I said that.”For a moment, the hesitation remained on their faces before it soon melted into something final.Resignation.She tentatively took the folder. They shared a look before turning to me. “Understood, Sir.” she said They both nodded slowly before they turned away. The door was gently closed, leaving the place in silence.I leaned back, staring up at the ceiling. They would no doubt believe that I was locking myself in a corner. Jason had prepared for every single casualty and I had thrown it away without a glance. To them, it seemed careless and risky. But every word I said held true. I wasn't giving up my position in Falloway Cooperation, neith

RykerThe silence that surrounded the rest of the building after stepping out from the elevator felt good. Jason worked fast and effectively. Somehow, between the time we'd left I'd traversed to my floor Now no television was on. There was no soft murmur of news channels in the background, no staff whispering about the headlines. It was quiet. Exactly what I asked for.I pushed my office door open and shut it behind me. The silence followed me in.I didn't hesitate to draw myself into work. Immediately I sat down and I focused myself on the files that I hadn't worked on. Project reports, financial statements and more. That would be my solace for the next few hours.Time passed. There were no calls from the directors or shareholders. It gave a brief illusion that this was just another day in my life. But time was still ticking. Morning soon turned to midday. There was one hour left until the press conference. Time was running out and I was painfully aware of every single agonising

RykerThe moment I stepped out of the car, I could already feel the weight crawling back onto my shoulders. Ever since the announcement of the Press Conference, no journalists were present at our doorstep. It wasn't out of some magnanimity. It was because now with an arranged time and place, they now had a clear target. At least that face this place the illusion of peace.Jason was waiting for me up front . I wasn't surprised. The tension in him was palpable. I could already tell from the look on his face that he had something to say.As he walked up to me, he didn’t waste time. Before I knew it, he took out a tablet from his briefcase and placed it in my view.“You see this?” he said, pushing the screen up. My jaw tightened immediately after processing the images.Robinson.“This is Robinson at the Journalist gala last night.” Jason stated the obvious, flipping through the images,“He was apparently their guest speaker. A ‘Scion of Justice and Truth’.”The words were spat out with

Ryker I groaned, forcing my eyes open despite the heaviness in them. Pain throbbed from goodness knew where yet it felt slightly…hollow. Numb. I could feel something soft underneath me. A scent, a rustle. Warmth. Somehow, the warm scent only sank deeper through me. Safe. I felt my gaze shift slightly to the side. I felt myself stop. It was that same figure again. Sitting quietly, humming something I couldn’t place. It was them. It was…her. She wasn’t facing me. Her back was straight and her hair fell in loose waves down her shoulders. She was there, so close…. Why couldn't I see her? No matter how hard I tried, a blinding light blurred out the rest. Yet somehow , only one thought remained in my mind. Beautiful… I couldn’t even explain it. Something lurched in my chest. It felt painful yet familiar. What was wrong with me? Who was she? I tried to move yet I couldn't feel my body. Pain shot through my body like fire yet it felt distant. I remained stuc

FLASHBACK CONTINUED Ryker I felt like I'd been punched in the gut. A knot formed in my throat, shock rolling through me like a truck. Of all the things that I'd braced myself for, this was the last thing in my mind. “Now?” I asked “Yes.” My uncle spoke, his voice firm and matter-of-fact. They both nodded in unison, their faces unmistakably serious. “Considering the situation, it's the best course of action,” Aunt Eleanor continued, reaching out. I felt her hands wrap around mine, squeezing lightly. “The entire public's eyes are on you. on US.” she emphasized, “Hilloway cooperation is being dragged down, our stock prices are lowering and from what you've told us so far, there's no other way to mitigate the disaster that James Robinson caused,” “Not to mention that aside from his claims, your…actions before has caused doubts upon the engagement and makes people question your relationship with us and Alice.” She continued. I didn't fail to notice how hesitantly she

Ryker I walked into my room, shutting the door behind me and paused. My head felt full, as though it had been stuffed with a thick layer of cotton. I took a deep breath trying to force it away. It still persisted. “Damn it,” I shook my head. Going to see Zerah was a mistake. Ridding myself of my suit, I moved straight into the shower. The warmth of the water trickling down my skin was able to get rid of some of the fog, but it wasn't enough. Stepping out in solely a towel, I didn't leave the bathroom. Instead my eyes landed on the mirror itself. I stopped in my tracks, watching my own reflection. Between last night and today, nothing much had changed. From the barely imperceptible darkness over my eyes, to my mouth, dry in a tight grimace I felt too numb to change. And yet, everything had changed. “You’re about to get married,” I watched and heard myself. My lips moved as I spoke, yet the words still rang as foreign, like they weren't mine. Saying it out loud fel
