NATALIE

Valen froze visibly.

At first, I assumed he hadn't heard me as he continued to walk out of the room, leading me to the dining table where two servings of fried rice had already been plated.

I sat, and he took the seat opposite me, his eyes everywhere else but on me. I turned the question over in my head.

"The little girl in the photo. Who is she to you?"

It sounded harmless enough, curious, light even. But he had gone completely still immediately the words left my mouth and I wished I could pull them back.

I scooped some rice into my mouth and chewed slowly. It was delicious, divine even but the question had settled in yh space between us and dramatically changed something in the air, so that light talk was impossible.

I wanted to tell him how good the food tasted but it just didn't feel right. Something in him had changed so sharply that I suddenly saw a stranger sitting in front of me. He looked like he was being pulled backwards, against his will into a memory he didn't wan

NATALIE The room was quiet. Too quiet. It always was quiet considering that there was no one to make a sound, and yet it felt different today. The silence was heavy, pressing against my ears, only broken by the rhythmic beeping of the heart monitor. It was the first thing I noticed when I stepped in, along with the sharp and clean smell of antiseptic in the air. I closed the door softly behind me as though she might hear it. As though it might wake her. If a ruckus could wake her, then I might have tried. "Hello," I said in a whisper. My voice trembled despite my effort to keep it steady. She was the same, lying there in bed. Small and fragile. Pale skin and prominent veins. She was a shadow of the person she used to be and it made me incredibly sad. This my mentor, the woman whose presence used to be so large, so much more significant than anyone else's in the room. Now, she was shrunken and silent, her infinite wisdom confined to the depths of her mind which couldn't be search

VALENFor a while after Natalie spoke, the world seemed to tilt and then stop abruptly. She had the exact replica of the bracelet? She still had it?Her words echoed in my head, louder than they should have been, shaking my core. I knew who she was and I should be used to it by now and yet, every new discovery that tied her more tightly to me rattled and disturbed me even more than the last.My chest tightened so suddenly that it surprised me. I inhaled sharply, afraid I might say something I couldn't explain away.Say it. Just ask her.The words screamed inside me but I couldn't bring myself to ask. I couldn't bring myself to unravel everything. At least not yet. Not now with the almost empty plates of food between us in my dining room after the presentation for a very important project. It just wasn't appropriate, neither was it the right time.Instead, I forced a breath into my lungs and let out something that vaguely resembled a chuckle. It came out strained and thin, but still a

VALENI'd never been so nervous about a video file in my entire life.I leaned over my desk in my study and watched the screen. The final frame of Natalie's presentation played and I stared keenly. She standing straight backed, eyes clear, voice steady as she outlined all the details of the pieces.I nodded slowly. Even knowing the amount of pain she had been in, how thin she had stretched herself for this, she was radiant. Convincing, grounded and eloquent. It was everything our presentation needed to be and for the first time in days, my anxiety eased a little. We actually might be able to win this thing. We might really be able to win on both sides. Malcolm could get his surgery and we could still win this competition. I still had to edit the video but even in it's raw form, it was near perfect.I stared at Natalie, holding back from embracing her in relief. She exhaled beside me, the sound barely audible. "Is it okay?" She asked.I stood up straight. "It's perfect," I said in an e

VALENI waited for the hostility I knew would follow a reaction to my words. Her spine stiffened even further than it already was, her eyes widening for just a fraction of a second before contracting back into a guarded expression."She's what?" She asked, her voice stretched with disbelief.I gave a small exhale. I knew this wasn't going to be easy but she was acting like I had just confessed to a crime. "She's giving him one of her kidneys. His both kidneys are failing," I said as if I had not already said it before.A look of confusion settled on her features. "Natalie? Why would she do that? Is she his sister?" She asked. Her brows were pulled close to each other, and the more she spoke, the more confused she looked."No, they're not related at all," I said quietly. The thought of any form of familial relationship between them made my skin crawl. Why would he go about kissing his sister on the lips? And publicly at that? Her expression didn't soften. If anything, it calcified. "Th

VALENI watched as Natalie slipped out of my office, folder in hand.I'd told her not to worry, that I was capable of handling things and that I would deal with my mother. Now that she was gone and all that remained was the cold echo of my own words, I shrank under the weight of my promise. How was I supposed to handle my mother? She wasn't the type of person to be handled, at least not easily and I knew how difficult it would be to convince her. Still, I had to try. Our company hung on the balance, and so did Malcolm's life. Anyone else would agree it was a sensible compromise— to record a video beforehand, so that Natalie could go ahead and donate her kidney. A win-win situation. But not my mother. I could already picture the incredulous look on her face and I dreaded it. Still, it was something I had to deal with.I jumped into my car, pushing thoughts of all the possible ways our conversation could go to the back of my mind as I sped towards my family's mansion. My hands tightened
