NATALIE

Valen led me into the hall, a hand placed delicately on the small of my back. It was surprisingly comforting even though it did little to still the jitters in my belly.

The room was alive. The chandeliers above dripped with golden light, every crystal piece catching the conversation and laughter that filtered from one end of the room to the other.

I walked slowly, my emerald dress a little too tight, and inhaled the scent of roses and champagne that swirled in the air, masking the desperate ambition that clung to each and everyone like a clingy ex-lover.

I adjusted the strap of my dress for the tenth time and wished that I hadn't panicked at the last minute and chosen it. I wasn't a stranger to events like these—rooms filled with pretentious people and their persistent pretentious smiles. The difference this time was that I was eager to please, perhaps too eager and I feared that it showed.

Valen was now standing beside me, immaculate as ever in his black tuxedo, every inch th

MALCOLMI spent the last hour pacing the length of my room, my fingers raking through my hair in a frenzy.I was angry and it was an anger fueled even more by the bitter memory of that night. It was a memory I thought I had forgotten, locked away securely at the back of mind but Natalie had kicked open the door, forcing me to confront the grief yet again. It used to make me sad, now it just made me frustrated and angry, and perhaps a little regretful as well.My pacing intensified as I took the same repetitive ten steps to and from my window, reliving the moment I had received the call that night that my girlfriend, the one who had been missing for so long was finally seen. I wasn't even sure why I had gone there but I wasn't thinking then. I'd been so blinded by my undying love for her that it hadn't even occurred to me that things would take such a drastic turn.Someone had spotted her at a club, partying away with no cares whatsoever. But that hadn't been important to me at all. I'

NATALIEI sat alone on Malcolm's couch, equal parts confused and hurt long after he shut his door in my face.I still heard the echo in my head, that final, dooming sound. The house felt hollow and tense without him standing here, like it was holding his breath. And more than ever, I felt the sense of not belonging here. That exact moment he had visibly stiffened still replayed in my mind in sharp, and painful flashes. The locking of his shoulders, the sudden drop in his voice, the way his eyes had darkened and his general cold demeanor, all fashioned to shut me out.I racked my brain, dissecting our conversation, my tone, my disposition. I'd spoken softly, humor in my voice and yet he had shut me down, his tone clipped."Well, you should mind your own business," he had said. And he had walked away. No further explanation, just a too loud silence. Now I sat staring at nothing, the soft glow of the light casting warm glows that sharply contrasted the cold knot in my chest. It hurt more

NATALIEI rolled my eyes when Malcolm walked around and opened my side of the door, holding an arm out for me.I should be used to his fussiness by now but I wasn't. This version of Malcolm was so far removed from the reality every one else knew that every now and then, I stared at him, my jaw dropping slightly and wondered if he had been swapped with a long lost twin I knew nothing about. He was gentle, too gentle. And he was attentive to the point of being dramatic. I thought about the stares we'd had to endure all day at the office and I felt a strange chilliness crawling down my spine. At least he wasn't scooping me up like a distressed bride anymore.I took his arm and let him lead me up to his front door. "You should rest for a while. I'll whip up something for dinner," he said when we got to my bedroom door.I shook my head quickly. He was doing too much and making me feel like a burden again. "You don't have to. I can order in pizza or something," I said too quickly, my words

NATALIEI waited with bated breath for the moment when Mrs. Gravestone would bring up my scandal. She didn't.She talked onboarding of new employees, policy reforms and staff benefits, moving smoothly from one subject to the other but she didn't once bring up me or Malcolm's name.It surprised me. We were the hottest subject of gossip and she was probably concerned as well, so why wasn't she saying anything? Of course, I didn't want her to bring it up either. I wasn't even sure what I would say if she did but I was used to being put on the spot like that."Lastly," she said as she turned to me and I almost flinched. The moment was here. She had saved the best for the last. I sat straighter, ready to pretend that I didn't care at all."I want Mia to be your partner as you work on the project. You'll need help and she'll provide it for you," she said.I looked at Mia who had her eyes fixed on Mrs. Gravestone as she nodded. The last thing I wanted to do in this world was have to work wit

NATALIE I flew out of bed when I heard the front door chime open. Malcolm was back. I felt a painful tug in my leg but I limped to the living room, my heart racing in my chest. I hadn't realized how lonely I felt in the house until this moment. I missed him and the realization hit me with surprising clarity. I stopped just as he stepped in after a woman in purple scrubs. Her hair was tied back in a tight bun and she had a huge, friendly smile on her face. "You must be Natalie," she said as she stepped towards me, a hand extended. I took her hand as my gaze flickered to Malcolm who had tossed his bag and was now hanging up his coat. "She's a caregiver," he said simply. I made a confused sound. He kept going the extra mile for me as if his sole purpose was to make me die of guilt. "I don't need a caregiver," I said through gritted teeth. The caregiver was still smiling at me and I felt terrible for doing this in front of her. Malcolm hardly spared me a glance as he spoke. "You

MALCOLM "I've fixed a bath for you. I'll wait outside while you take off your clothes," I said. She looked up at me, eyes widening slightly before she seemed to catch herself and nodded. I hid a smile as I stepped out and waited beside the door. When the door opened again, she was standing there in only a white towel, her hair tied up in a messy bun. I gulped and quickly fixed my eyes on her face. "You didn't have to," she said, her face bright red. I cleared my throat as I lifted her off the floor and carried her to the bathroom. "Nothing like a bath to help anyone relax," I muttered. I placed her in the bath and positioned her leg gently in the water. She winced slightly and then looked up at me with a small smile. I knew she was in pain. She was just adept at hiding it. "I'll be back in thirty minutes. Enjoy your bath," I said and took several slow steps to the door. "Wait," she said and I turned back so quickly that I almost lost my footing. She pressed her lips together
