Chapter 2

Penulis: Tonya Hugh
I ignored everyone and turned back to my room. I had to take several deep breaths before I was finally able to drag myself over to the bed.

My hospital bag was still there, exactly where I'd left it open that morning before I went out.

I'd originally planned to pack more stuff when I got back, but there was no longer a need to do so. I started putting everything away in a daze. After some time had passed, Mason finally came in.

His gaze lingered on me for a moment. "That's just how Viv talks. She didn't mean anything by it, so don't dwell on it. Just focus on taking care of yourself."

When I didn't respond, he frowned. "Honestly, a car accident is a serious matter. You should've called me. If you'd called sooner, maybe things wouldn't have ended differently."

I lifted my head to look at him, a tickling sensation creeping up my throat. "You think I didn't call?"

He nodded matter-of-factly. "Well, you didn't, right? I really don't get what you're trying to prove by acting so tough. You should learn from Viv and tell me right away when there's something wrong…"

He froze, his voice suddenly caught in his throat. His phone screen was filled with missed calls from me, but he hadn't answered a single one.

I smirked faintly. "What about now? Still think I didn't call?"

He quickly locked his screen, muttering, "Viv was giving birth. I was in the operating room, so I missed them. You know giving birth is a big deal. And as a doctor, I couldn't just sit back and do nothing."

The ache in my heart spread through my whole body, and tears slipped down my cheeks before I could stop them.

With a sigh, Mason said, "God, you're such a handful. Why are you crying again? Can't we just talk things out calmly?"

I let out a bitter laugh and looked away, my voice coming out hoarse. "Forget it. There's nothing left to say. Let's just go to the cemetery to pick out a burial plot for the baby tomorrow. We should at least give her a proper place to rest."

He fell silent for a moment before softly agreeing.

The next day, I arrived at the cemetery early. Afternoon came, and Mason was still a no-show. It took eight calls before he finally picked up.

"Where are you?"

It took him a moment to answer. "The baby wouldn't stop crying. Vivian can't handle him alone."

My throat felt like it was on fire. I couldn't help raising my voice. "Did you ever stop to think that your own child is still lying in the cold morgue? Can't you at least spare even one glance at her?"

There was a long silence on the other end before he answered in a helpless tone, "Honey, I don't have a choice. Viv isn't doing well emotionally. She's vulnerable right now. I'll head over as soon as I get things sorted out here."

I gave a faint, bitter smirk. "Don't bother."

I hung up and picked out a plot on my own. By the time I finished taking care of everything, it was already evening.

When I got home, Mason was happily tending to the baby. "Be good, little one. Don't give your mommy a hard time. Grow up big and strong, okay?"

I tightened my grip on the doorknob instantly. I'd once imagined what it would be like after our baby was born and what a happy family of three we would be.

But now, somehow, I had become an outsider. And honestly, my child deserved so much better.

My eyelashes trembled slightly as I walked in.

Mason looked at me sheepishly. "You're back? The baby was really fussy today. I honestly couldn't get away. Tomorrow. I promise I'll go with you tomorrow."

Setting my bag down, I shook my head. "No need. It's already taken care of."

Mason's smile vanished instantly. His voice turned stern as he questioned, "Leah, why are you making such a big deal out of this? Vivian needed me here. Can't you be understanding for once?"

Vivian immediately put on a pitiful look, her eyes turning red as she timidly looked my way. "Leah, I'm so sorry. I didn't mean to hog your husband. It's just that I'm a new mom, and I don't know what I'm doing."

Mason soothed her in a low voice, "Don't think like that. You're doing great. I don't know what's gotten into her. Just ignore her."

I crossed my arms and smiled. "Even if you don't know what you're doing, that's fine. From now on, you can have this man. He's all yours."

Mason's breathing faltered, his throat tightening as he nuzzled his chin against my palm.He choked out, "It's okay. Even if you don't believe me, it's fine. I'm here now, and I'll prove it to you little by little from now on."His eyes were red and bloodshot. Yet, all I felt in my heart was an indescribable bitterness.A flood of emotions overwhelmed me, and I couldn't stop scratching at my arms.My voice came out rough and strained. "Mason, you're a doctor. People always praise you for being compassionate. So why couldn't you have a little compassion for my baby?"Did you hate her? Did you not like her at all? Just like how my mom and dad never liked me? Tell me, is that it? Is it?"I cried until I could barely make a sound. As my arms and legs trembled uncontrollably, my shoulders shook violently.Mason held me tightly. He held me close against his warm chest, his voice betraying the fear he was feeling. "No, I love you. I really do. I miss her too. I dreamed that she was loo

I quickly came back to my senses and tried to pull my hand away but failed. "What are you doing here?"Mason gripped my hand, explaining in a low voice, "The hospital called me. They said you kept trying to hurt yourself and refused to eat or drink… And they were worried about your emotional state, so they wanted a family member to come keep an eye on you."Without looking his way, I said, "You're hardly family anymore."His breath caught, and he abruptly pulled me into a tight embrace. "No, honey. I've been looking for you this whole time. I haven't had a good night's sleep in ages. Now that I've finally found you, please don't tell me to leave, honey."I pushed him away. "But I don't want to see you. I don't have the energy to deal with you right now, so can you please just leave me alone, Mason?""No, I don't want to." Mason shook his head frantically, his voice choked with sobs. "I'm sorry. I shouldn't have ignored you, and I promise to take good care of you from now on."I'l

The sharp smell of disinfectant filled my nose, and I wearily opened my eyes.As I looked around the familiar hospital room, I felt a pang of disappointment. Apparently, I didn't die this time either.A nurse came in with a tray and gently changed the dressing on my wrist. "Avoid getting this wet, don't lift anything heavy for the time being, and make sure you keep an eye on the wound."I pressed my lips together, turning my head as I spoke in a barely audible voice, "You people didn't have to save me."The nurse's hands paused for a moment before she spoke softly, "It's okay, ma'am. Everything will get better with time. I believe that day will come for you."I turned to look out the window. I smirked and said nothing more.I came to this place after the divorce. At first, life was fairly normal. I found an apartment and bought daily necessities.I thought that changing my environment would make things better. But as time went on, my emotions became harder and harder to control.

Mason stood downstairs alone, not knowing how long he'd been there or where to go.As the moon climbed higher, he remembered how, whenever he was out, I would nag him to come home as soon as possible. Then, I would stand there with my hands on her hips, telling him off for not listening.Back then, he never thought much of it. But now, he suddenly found himself desperately wanting to hear that voice again. In the end, he drove to a bar.Under the blue and purple lights, he downed drink after drink. Alas, no amount of alcohol could ease the heaviness in his chest. In his drunken haze, he called Rupert Hughes over."What's wrong? Why are you drinking so much?"Mason lowered his head, his voice hoarse. "Leah… She left. I waited outside the city hall all day by myself today. I was even planning to take her somewhere nice to eat after we remarried."Rupert looked puzzled. "What are you talking about? I thought you guys had an amicable split. Didn't she leave ages ago?"Mason's heart

"I don't believe this. How is this possible? How could it be over between us?"Mason's breathing grew labored, his fingertips turning white as he clenched the phone. He stared fixedly at that social media post. A whole month had already passed since it was posted. It suddenly hit him that I hadn't replied to a single message he'd sent over the past month. "No. No way."Mason swallowed hard. He called me over and over again, but there was still no answer. He immediately texted me between ragged breaths. Still, there was no reply.Mason stared at the screen in silence, feeling like there was nothing left inside him. He clutched his chest, his shoulders trembling uncontrollably. After what seemed like ages, he finally dragged his numb legs forward. "Home. I need to look for her at home. I'll find her. I can find her."He stumbled through the front door, only to find no sign of me inside. That was when it finally hit him—we were already divorced, and I had been gone for a month. He

Vivian immediately shrank back. Clutching Mason's sleeve tightly, she said, "Mason, that's not what I meant. How could Leah think of me that way…"Mason grabbed my arm, his brows tightly furrowed as he spoke impatiently, "Leah, postpartum mood swings can easily lead to depression. You need to be more tolerant of her. Apologize to her right now, and we'll let this whole thing go."I quietly freed myself from his grip, a metallic taste of blood rising in my throat. He remembered Vivian had just given birth and was worried about her developing postpartum depression. Yet somehow, he forgot that I'd been pregnant too and that I'd just lost our baby.Maybe he did remember. He just couldn't be bothered to spend any of his energy on me.Right then, Mildred walked in and hugged Vivian tightly. "Viv, ignore her. She's never been a mother, so she can't understand what you're going through."You can stay here for as long as you want. This is your home."My lashes quivered as I silently gaze
