Chapter 1

As soon as the call ended, I became painfully aware of how quiet my surroundings were. It felt like I'd been plunged into freezing water, and I could barely feel my arms and legs.

Right then, a notification popped up on my phone. It was the photos from the photographer.

"Ms. Merritt, the edits on your maternity shoot are done. Let me know if there's anything you want changed. I hope you and your baby love them."

I looked down at my completely deflated stomach, the light slowly fading from my eyes. Numb and dazed, I walked out of the hospital and took a taxi home.

In the living room, a crowd was gathered around a baby, buzzing with excitement. One of Mason Crawford's buddies called out to me immediately. "Oh, Leah, you're back. Come see Vivian's little boy. He's seriously adorable."

The moment he finished speaking, my mother-in-law, Mildred Torres, immediately chimed in with a sneer, "And where have you been off to? Did it not even occur to you to help out when Viv was having her baby?

"I told Mason from the start that I never wanted him to marry you. If you hadn't seduced him with your body, you never would've stepped foot in this house."

Ever since I married Mason, Mildred had been nitpicking everything I did.

She looked down on me for my upbringing, always saying I was narrow-minded and unsophisticated. I'd always put up with it, always letting her have her way. But now, I was done holding back.

I looked up and gave a sarcastic smirk. "Then, why didn't you just slip her some pills and send her straight to your son's bed?"

Mildred's face turned bright red. "You think everyone's just as shameless as you? Our Vivian would never do something like that."

I covered my mouth with a hand. "She wouldn't, huh? But she seems totally fine with crawling back to her ex with another man's baby in her belly."

"Leah Merritt, shut your mouth."

Mason came downstairs with Vivian Werner, holding her hand. His face was dark as he shot me a warning look. "Go have a look at the baby for now. You're his godmother, after all."

I stared at him, and a chill settled in my heart.

Mildred grinned as she chimed in, "Exactly. Viv really did a good job with her son. Just look how cute this little guy is. To be honest, he even looks a bit like Mason."

Mason's expression softened when he heard that. "I'm his godfather. Of course he's going to look like me."

Vivian hid her smile behind her hand, then gasped the moment she saw me. "Leah, what happened to your belly? Why did you have the baby without telling anyone?"

Only then did Mason look at me. He frowned, questioning, "What happened? Didn't we agree that I'd be the one delivering the baby?"

That was true. When I first found out I was pregnant, he'd been over the moon.

He held me and said the happiest moment of his life would be delivering our child himself. But that had only been true before Vivian showed up…

I lowered my gaze, my fingers unconsciously brushing over my belly. "The baby's gone."

Mason's eyes went wide. "What do you mean, 'gone'? Explain yourself."

Despite the sharp pain in my chest, I looked up. "I got into a car accident, and they weren't able to save the baby."

Mildred immediately flew into a rage. "Give me back my grandchild! This is all your fault! You just had to insist on driving yourself!

"You were always clinging to Mason, so who were you trying to put on a tough front for? And what did all that get you? You got yourself into an accident!"

As I looked around at everyone in the room, my heart turned cold. I couldn't even keep my breathing steady anymore.

Didn't I ask him to take me, though? Ever since Vivian came back, his phone had become nothing but a paperweight when it came to me.

Vivian gave a soft, reproachful sigh. "Don't be too sad, Leah. Not everyone is cut out to be a mother anyway. Maybe you just weren't good enough to be one. You should really take some time to do some self-reflection."

I instinctively clenched my fists, my emotions threatening to spill over.

Mason suddenly spoke up, "Viv, that's enough."

He turned to me and patted my shoulder. "Don't take it so hard. We can always have another baby."

My throat tightened, and my eyelids felt too heavy to lift. I couldn't understand how he could just accept everything so easily, then turn around and comfort me with such heartfelt words.

Wasn't he sad at all?

I looked into his indifferent eyes, and all I knew was that I wanted this to end.

Mason's breathing faltered, his throat tightening as he nuzzled his chin against my palm.He choked out, "It's okay. Even if you don't believe me, it's fine. I'm here now, and I'll prove it to you little by little from now on."His eyes were red and bloodshot. Yet, all I felt in my heart was an indescribable bitterness.A flood of emotions overwhelmed me, and I couldn't stop scratching at my arms.My voice came out rough and strained. "Mason, you're a doctor. People always praise you for being compassionate. So why couldn't you have a little compassion for my baby?"Did you hate her? Did you not like her at all? Just like how my mom and dad never liked me? Tell me, is that it? Is it?"I cried until I could barely make a sound. As my arms and legs trembled uncontrollably, my shoulders shook violently.Mason held me tightly. He held me close against his warm chest, his voice betraying the fear he was feeling. "No, I love you. I really do. I miss her too. I dreamed that she was loo

I quickly came back to my senses and tried to pull my hand away but failed. "What are you doing here?"Mason gripped my hand, explaining in a low voice, "The hospital called me. They said you kept trying to hurt yourself and refused to eat or drink… And they were worried about your emotional state, so they wanted a family member to come keep an eye on you."Without looking his way, I said, "You're hardly family anymore."His breath caught, and he abruptly pulled me into a tight embrace. "No, honey. I've been looking for you this whole time. I haven't had a good night's sleep in ages. Now that I've finally found you, please don't tell me to leave, honey."I pushed him away. "But I don't want to see you. I don't have the energy to deal with you right now, so can you please just leave me alone, Mason?""No, I don't want to." Mason shook his head frantically, his voice choked with sobs. "I'm sorry. I shouldn't have ignored you, and I promise to take good care of you from now on."I'l

The sharp smell of disinfectant filled my nose, and I wearily opened my eyes.As I looked around the familiar hospital room, I felt a pang of disappointment. Apparently, I didn't die this time either.A nurse came in with a tray and gently changed the dressing on my wrist. "Avoid getting this wet, don't lift anything heavy for the time being, and make sure you keep an eye on the wound."I pressed my lips together, turning my head as I spoke in a barely audible voice, "You people didn't have to save me."The nurse's hands paused for a moment before she spoke softly, "It's okay, ma'am. Everything will get better with time. I believe that day will come for you."I turned to look out the window. I smirked and said nothing more.I came to this place after the divorce. At first, life was fairly normal. I found an apartment and bought daily necessities.I thought that changing my environment would make things better. But as time went on, my emotions became harder and harder to control.

Mason stood downstairs alone, not knowing how long he'd been there or where to go.As the moon climbed higher, he remembered how, whenever he was out, I would nag him to come home as soon as possible. Then, I would stand there with my hands on her hips, telling him off for not listening.Back then, he never thought much of it. But now, he suddenly found himself desperately wanting to hear that voice again. In the end, he drove to a bar.Under the blue and purple lights, he downed drink after drink. Alas, no amount of alcohol could ease the heaviness in his chest. In his drunken haze, he called Rupert Hughes over."What's wrong? Why are you drinking so much?"Mason lowered his head, his voice hoarse. "Leah… She left. I waited outside the city hall all day by myself today. I was even planning to take her somewhere nice to eat after we remarried."Rupert looked puzzled. "What are you talking about? I thought you guys had an amicable split. Didn't she leave ages ago?"Mason's heart

"I don't believe this. How is this possible? How could it be over between us?"Mason's breathing grew labored, his fingertips turning white as he clenched the phone. He stared fixedly at that social media post. A whole month had already passed since it was posted. It suddenly hit him that I hadn't replied to a single message he'd sent over the past month. "No. No way."Mason swallowed hard. He called me over and over again, but there was still no answer. He immediately texted me between ragged breaths. Still, there was no reply.Mason stared at the screen in silence, feeling like there was nothing left inside him. He clutched his chest, his shoulders trembling uncontrollably. After what seemed like ages, he finally dragged his numb legs forward. "Home. I need to look for her at home. I'll find her. I can find her."He stumbled through the front door, only to find no sign of me inside. That was when it finally hit him—we were already divorced, and I had been gone for a month. He

Vivian immediately shrank back. Clutching Mason's sleeve tightly, she said, "Mason, that's not what I meant. How could Leah think of me that way…"Mason grabbed my arm, his brows tightly furrowed as he spoke impatiently, "Leah, postpartum mood swings can easily lead to depression. You need to be more tolerant of her. Apologize to her right now, and we'll let this whole thing go."I quietly freed myself from his grip, a metallic taste of blood rising in my throat. He remembered Vivian had just given birth and was worried about her developing postpartum depression. Yet somehow, he forgot that I'd been pregnant too and that I'd just lost our baby.Maybe he did remember. He just couldn't be bothered to spend any of his energy on me.Right then, Mildred walked in and hugged Vivian tightly. "Viv, ignore her. She's never been a mother, so she can't understand what you're going through."You can stay here for as long as you want. This is your home."My lashes quivered as I silently gaze
