Leonardo's POV

Morning light streamed through the study windows, I sipped my coffee, reviewing the day's schedule.

My security chief, Brian, knocked and entered.

"Don, we've received information about Genna," he said, his expression grave.

I set my cup down. "What is it, Brian?"

Brian handed me a file. "This is Clinton, Genna's brother."

A photograph showed a young man with a striking resemblance to Genna.

"What about him?" I asked.

Brian's voice was somber. "He was murdered, Sir. The same night you found Miss Genna on the road."

My grip on the file tightened. Genna's desperation to find her brother made sense now.

"Who's responsible for his death?" I demanded.

Brian's expression turned grim. "Some masked men. We don't know who they are or why they targeted Clinton but they were searching for Genna too.”

I studied the photo, my mind racing. Genna's past seems to be more complicated than I'd thought.

"Is there anything else?" I asked.

Brian hesitated. "Yes, Don. We found out that Genna has an aunt. She's the one who sold her to those men that night."

My eyes narrowed. "What?"

Brian nodded. "Our sources confirm the aunt was involved. After the men dragged Genna out of the house, the aunt was nowhere to be found."

A surge of anger coursed through me. Who would sell their own family?

"Find the aunt," I ordered. "I want to know her role in this."

Brian nodded. "Already on it, Don."

“Genna must not hear about this, yet. Until I find out everything about her.” I demanded.

“Alright, Don.” Brian nodded. "Understood, Don.”

As Brian left, I couldn't shake the feeling that Genna's presence was more than a coincidence.

Why was she on that road, that night?

What did she know about her brother's murder?

And what did it have to do with me?

My gaze drifted to the dungeon, where Genna was being held.

Just then, Denise burst into the room.

"Uncle Leo, where's Genna?" she demanded.

"Denise, what's wrong?" I asked.

"I won't eat breakfast until I see Genna," she said, her lower lip jutting out.

I sighed. "Fine. Bring Genna to me," I ordered.

A few minutes later, Genna was led into the room, her eyes flashing with defiance. Her hair was disheveled, and her clothes were rumpled from the night in the dungeon.

"Genna," I said, my voice cold. "I have a proposal for you."

"What is it?" she asked warily.

"I want you to be Denise's nanny," I said.

Genna's eyes widened. "You can't be serious."

"I am," I replied. "You'll take care of Denise, and in return, I'll provide for you."

Genna shook her head. "No."

I leaned forward, my eyes narrowing. "You're indebted to me, Genna. I saved your life."

I watched her jaw clench on defiance, and she looked really cute. "That doesn't mean I'll be your servant."

"I'm not asking you to be a servant," I said. "I'm offering you a chance to repay your debt."

Genna's eyes flashed, but she knew she was trapped.

"You'll do as I say," I emphasized. "You'll follow my rules."

Genna's gaze dropped.

"Fine," she muttered.

Denise clapped her hands. "Yay! Genna will be my nanny!"

Genna forced a smile. "I'll take care of Denise."

I nodded. "Good. Brian will show you to your new quarters."

As Genna followed Brian out, I couldn't help but feel a sense of satisfaction.

Genna would stay under my roof, and I would uncover the truth.

******

I stood at my study window, gazing out at the perfectly manicured lawn.

Suddenly, a sleek, tinted car drove up the winding driveway. My gaze narrowed and a tall, imposing figure stepped out.

Marco. My twin brother.

I clenched my jaw. Marco's presence was always unwelcome.

As Mafia leaders, our paths often crossed, but our relationship was strained.

We were identical twins, we shared the same chiseled features and powerful build. But our similarities ended there. He had always been my father's favorite and he bullied me mostly when we were younger.

Memories flooded in as I remembered the constant comparison, rebuking and favoritism on his side. I had to struggle to build my own empire from the scratch.

Marco's eyes locked onto mine, his gaze cold and calculating.

He strode toward the mansion, flanked by his bodyguards.

Marco stepped into my study, his presence commanding attention.

Denise, sitting on the couch, looked up at Marco with wide eyes.

"Uncle Leo, who's that?" she asked, her voice trembling.

Marco's gaze shifted to Denise, and he smiled.

"Hello, little one," he said, crouching down.

Denise's eyes filled with fear, and she scrambled off the couch.

"Uncle Leo!" she shrieked, running to me.

I wrapped a protective arm around her.

Her screams brought Genna’s attention and she entered the study immediately, her eyes scanning the room.

"Denise, come here," she called gently.

Denise rushed to Genna, clinging to her hand.

As Genna turned to leave, her gaze caught on the photo of Clinton on my desk. She stared briefly at the photo before turning away.

Marco's gaze locked onto Genna and their eyes met.

She quickly looked away and ushered Denise out of the study.

But his eyes still lingered on the doorway where Genna had disappeared.

"Who is she?" Marco asked.

"None of your concern. What do you want, Marco?" I asked.

Marco's smile widened.

"You will soon know. I'd love to meet that woman again. She is charming”

I stepped forward.

"You'll stay away from her."

Marco raised an eyebrow.

"The protective Macho man, aren't you?" He sneered.

"Leave my estate" I growled.

Marco's visit was no coincidence.

He was after something or someone. His sudden interest in Genna was unwanted.

As he walked back to his car, he spotted Genna.

My eyes narrowed as Marco changed direction, striding toward Genna.

She stood alone, her eyes fixed on the flowers. Marco approached her, his smile charming.

I couldn't hear their conversation. He reached for Genna's hands. She pulled back, her eyes flashing. Marco persisted and my anger boiled.

Genna's gaze met mine and for a moment, our eyes locked.

Then Marco turned, following her gaze.

His eyes met mine.

Marco released Genna's wrist, but his parting words made her pale.

Genna hurried away and Marco watched her go.

Marco got into his car and drove away.

I strode out of my study, finding Genna in the hallway.

"Genna," I called.

She turned.

"What did Marco say?" I demanded.

Genna hesitated.

"Nothing," she muttered.

"Tell me," I ordered.

"He asked me to dinner," she whispered.

My anger boiled.

"Did he threaten you?" I asked.

She nodded.

I'll handle Marco. No one touches what's mine.

Leonardo's POV I woke up slow with pain shooting through my shoulder sharp and hot while my head throbbed hard from the bat hit.My arms felt heavy from chains binding my wrists behind my back. I tried to move but the metal bit into my skin and the floor under me stayed cold and hard so I groaned low because blood still seeped warm from the wound and soaked my shirt. The room stayed pitch black with no light at all coming from anywhere and I felt the dark press in close like walls closing so my breath came fast and shallow while panic rose quickly in my chest.I pulled at the chains again but they held firm and I slammed my head back against the wall hard because the dark triggered everything. From when I was a kid and Marco locked me in the wine cellar for hours with no light and no sound except my own crying. I remembered the first time he did it when we were eight and he laughed outside the door while I begged him to let me out because the black felt alive and swallowing and I s

Leonardo's POV I sat in my study that evening with the lamp on low and the whiskey glass empty on the desk while I stared at papers without reading them. My mind kept going back to Denise's words from this morning about Adriana planning the kidnap and the footage Bruno sent confirming every detail. I felt anger sit heavy in my chest but I pushed it down for now because I needed to plan how to handle her without starting a war with her father. The house stayed quiet outside with Denise asleep early and the guards on their rounds so I poured another drink to steady my hands.A knock came softly at the door and one guard stepped in with an envelope in his hand. “This came anonymously at the gate,” he said, handed it to me, and left quietly when I nodded.I looked at the plain white envelope with no name except mine in handwriting I did not know and my heart beat faster for no reason I could name. I opened it slowly, pulled out the photo inside, felt my breath stop when I saw Genna ch

  • Love Amidst Shadows: A Mafia Romance Story    Chapter 62

Leonardo's POV I sat in my study that evening with the coffee gone cold on the desk while I stared at the phone waiting for Bruno to call back with the footage. Denise's words from earlier kept playing in my head and I needed proof before I accused Adriana of something so bad. The room felt quiet with only the clock ticking on the wall and the rain starting soft outside so I paced to the window, looked out at the garden where Denise usually played but stayed empty now because she kept to her room more since the kidnap. I thought about her small face when she told me Adriana hugged the bad man and paid him and my stomach twisted because if it was true, I let a monster into my home. The phone rang fifteen minutes later and Bruno's voice came through rough. “I have the footage boss,” he said. “I’m sending it now. It's from a camera across the street from the warehouse. Though, you won't like it.”I opened the video on my laptop fast with my hands steady but my heart beating hard. The

Leonardo's POV I sat in my study that morning with papers spread on the desk and coffee gone cold beside me because I tried to work on the alliance details with Don Salvatore but my mind kept wandering to Genna and where she could be now. The ring on Adriana's finger flashed in my head every time I looked at my own hand and I felt doubt creep in slowly because marrying her felt right for business but wrong in my gut. I rubbed my eyes tired from no sleep, picked up the pen again, and tried to focus on the numbers. The door opened soft and Denise peeked in with her hair in braids and her favorite blue dress on. She walked slowly to the desk, climbed into the big chair opposite me, and sat with her legs swinging.“Morning Uncle Leo,” she said quietly.I set the pen down fast, leaned forward because she rarely came to my study alone these days. “Morning sweetheart,” I said, smiling real because seeing her always helped a little. “What’s up?”She looked at her hands in her lap, twisted

Genna's POV I sat against the cold wall in the dark basement where Marco kept me chained with my wrists sore from the metal and my body aching from the hard floor because days blurred together without any light to tell morning from night. I tried to count time by the meals they shoved through the slot but even that felt useless now with the bread stale and the water warm from sitting. I dozed when I could but sleep came fitful with dreams of Leonardo's face turning away in hate and Denise calling for me in the dark so I woke crying more often than not. My mind wandered back to the estate every hour with memories of warm beds and hot meals and arms around me at night but the cold here reminded me those days were gone forever.I thought about escaping a hundred times while I lay there pulling at the chains until my skin broke but the metal stayed strong and the door stayed locked. I screamed for help the first few days until my voice went hoarse but no one came except the silent gu

  • Love Amidst Shadows: A Mafia Romance Story    Chapter 59

Leonardo's POV I woke up that morning with the sun coming through the curtains and my bed feeling too big because Genna’s side stayed empty and cold since she left. I lay there a minute thinking about how quiet the house felt without her laugh or her footsteps or her voice calling Denise downstairs. I missed the way she made breakfast messy but happy with flour on her nose and Denise giggling while they cooked together. I missed her hugs when Denise fell asleep on her lap and the way she looked at me like I could do no wrong. Three days passed since Adriana brought Denise home and I tried to forget Genna because the men who took Denise said she and Marco sent them and that made the hate stronger than the missing. I told myself she was gone for good and I needed to move on.I got up, showered, dressed in black pants and a shirt, and went to the kitchen for coffee. Adriana was already there pouring her own cup with her hair tied back and a smile when she saw me. She sat beside me at
