Genna's POV

I strolled through the garden, enjoying the serene atmosphere. Suddenly, I heard sniffling. A little girl, no more than eight years old, sat on a bench, her face buried in her hands.

"Hey, kiddo, what's wrong?" I asked gently, approaching her.

"Leave me alone!" she snapped, wiping her nose with her sleeve.

"I'm not going to hurt you," I said softly. "Want to talk about what's bothering you?"

The girl glared, her lips pursed. "No."

I waited patiently, letting the silence comfort her. Slowly, her rigid posture relaxed.

"You don't know Uncle Leo," she muttered, her voice laced with venom.

My curiosity piqued, I asked, "Uncle Leo?"

She nodded, tears welling up again. "He's always busy. Never plays with me. Never allows me to go out with my friends."

My heart ached for this little girl. I took her small hand, and to my surprise, she didn't pull away.

"Sometimes grown-ups have to work a lot," I explained.

She looked up, her expression skeptical. "You don't know anything!"

I smiled. "Maybe not, but I'm listening."

I remembered the stern expression on Leonardo's face, and it was hard to imagine him as a caring uncle.

"I'm sure Uncle Leo loves you," I said softly.

She shook her head vigorously. "No! He loves his work more!"

I smiled. "Sometimes, grown-ups have to work a lot to take care of their families.”

Her gaze lingered on mine, and for an instant, I saw a glimmer of vulnerability.

"What's your name?" I asked.

"Denise," she whispered.

"I'm Genna," I replied.

Denise's face remained stern, but her eyes softened.

As we sat together, the tension eased. We chatted and laughed together, and I discovered we shared a love for flowers and ice cream.

As the sun began to set, casting a warm glow over the garden, Denise's tears were replaced with giggles.

Just then, Leonardo appeared at the garden entrance, his expression softening as he saw Denise smiling. My God, he was strikingly attractive. His black hair shone in the sunset and his lips curved into a little smile.

He wore a tight fitted shirt, revealing his biceps. He had a masculine body with a trimmed waist. I struggled to keep my gaze away from his lips as he walked closer.

"Denise, amore," he called out, striding toward us.

Denise's face fell, and she whispered, "Here comes Uncle Leo."

I gave her hand a reassuring squeeze.

"Hey, Uncle Leo!" Denise said, her voice dripping with sweetness.

Leonardo raised an eyebrow. "What's going on here?"

Denise grinned mischievously. "You didn't tell me we had a guest. Genna and I are friends now!"

Leonardo's gaze shifted to me, his expression unreadable.

"That's good," he said finally.

Leonardo's eyes narrowed, but he said nothing.

"Denise, let's get you to dinner," he said.

Denise skipped ahead, leaving Leonardo and me alone.

As Denise disappeared into the mansion, Leonardo's expression transformed, his brows furrowing into a little frown.

"Genna," he began, his voice low and authoritative.

I stood, brushing off my skirt, preparing for a confrontation.

"You'll remain here, in my estate, until your memories return," he stated, his tone expecting no argument.

I laughed, incredulous. "You think I'll just stay here, doing nothing, while my brother's out there, possibly in danger?"

Leonardo's expression remained impassive. "You're in no condition to search for anyone. You're safest here."

"Safest?" I echoed, anger rising. "You know nothing about me or my life. I won't be trapped here."

Leonardo's jaw clenched. "You don't understand. This estate is the only place you're secure. Outside, you're vulnerable. Besides, I need to be sure that you're not a spy."

"I'd rather take my chances," I spat, crossing my arms.

Leonardo's eyes flashed with warning. "You're refusing my hospitality?"

"Hospitality?" I snorted. "You're holding me prisoner."

Leonardo's voice dropped to a menacing whisper. "You'd do well to remember who I am. I am Don Leonardo Sorrento. Nobody refuses my orders."

A shiver ran down my spine as he stepped closer, his presence intimidating.

Sorrento? That name seems to ring a bell.

"You're scared," he observed, his eyes glinting. "You should be. My protection comes with a price: obedience."

My heart pounded, but I stood my ground. "I won't be intimidated."

Leonardo's smile was cold. "We'll see about that."

The air seemed to thicken, heavy with tension.

"What's to stop me from leaving?" I challenged, trying to sound brave.

Leonardo's eyes locked onto mine. "My men. The gates. The walls. You won't leave this estate without my permission."

I swallowed hard, my mind racing. I was trapped.

For a moment, I considered surrender, but the thought of Clinton, possibly hurt or worse, propelled me forward.

"I won't give up," I vowed, my voice barely above a whisper.

Leonardo's expression didn't change, but his eyes seemed to bore into my soul.

"We'll see how long that determination lasts," he said, turning to leave.

As he disappeared into the mansion, I felt the weight of his warning settle upon me. I was trapped, at the mercy of a Mafia Don.

*****

When night fell, I waited until the household grew quiet, then slipped out of my room, determined to escape.

I wafted through the shadows, avoiding the occasional guard that patrolled the yard. My heart pounded in my chest, but I pressed on.

I pushed the side door open, and a cool breeze carried the scent of freedom.

Just as I stepped out, strong arms grasped me from behind.

"Got you," a rough voice whispered.

I struggled, but they held me firm.

"Let me go!" I demanded.

The men dragged me back into the mansion, through the winding corridors, and into Leonardo's study.

He sat behind his desk, his eyes blazing with anger.

"Genna," he said, his voice low and menacing. "I warned you."

"You can't keep me prisoner!" I spat.

Leonardo's expression turned icy. "You're a guest in my home. Act like it."

"I won't be held captive!" I shouted.

Leonardo's face darkened. "You dare to disobey me?”

He rose from his chair, towering over me.

"Lock her up," he ordered his men.

My stomach dropped. "No!"

The men grasped my arms, pulling me away.

"Where are you taking me?" I demanded.

One of them replied, "The dungeon."

Dungeon? Fear clawed at my mind.

As they dragged me down into the darkness, I realized the true extent of Leonardo's power.

The air grew colder, the shadows deepening into an abyss.

A heavy door creaked open, revealing a damp, dimly lit cell.

They thrust me inside, slamming the iron door shut behind me.

I stumbled forward, my hands outstretched.

"Let me out!" I screamed.

Only silence replied.

I slumped against the cold wall, tears streaming down my face.

How could I escape now?

Leonardo's POV I woke up slow with pain shooting through my shoulder sharp and hot while my head throbbed hard from the bat hit.My arms felt heavy from chains binding my wrists behind my back. I tried to move but the metal bit into my skin and the floor under me stayed cold and hard so I groaned low because blood still seeped warm from the wound and soaked my shirt. The room stayed pitch black with no light at all coming from anywhere and I felt the dark press in close like walls closing so my breath came fast and shallow while panic rose quickly in my chest.I pulled at the chains again but they held firm and I slammed my head back against the wall hard because the dark triggered everything. From when I was a kid and Marco locked me in the wine cellar for hours with no light and no sound except my own crying. I remembered the first time he did it when we were eight and he laughed outside the door while I begged him to let me out because the black felt alive and swallowing and I s

Leonardo's POV I sat in my study that evening with the lamp on low and the whiskey glass empty on the desk while I stared at papers without reading them. My mind kept going back to Denise's words from this morning about Adriana planning the kidnap and the footage Bruno sent confirming every detail. I felt anger sit heavy in my chest but I pushed it down for now because I needed to plan how to handle her without starting a war with her father. The house stayed quiet outside with Denise asleep early and the guards on their rounds so I poured another drink to steady my hands.A knock came softly at the door and one guard stepped in with an envelope in his hand. “This came anonymously at the gate,” he said, handed it to me, and left quietly when I nodded.I looked at the plain white envelope with no name except mine in handwriting I did not know and my heart beat faster for no reason I could name. I opened it slowly, pulled out the photo inside, felt my breath stop when I saw Genna ch

Leonardo's POV I sat in my study that evening with the coffee gone cold on the desk while I stared at the phone waiting for Bruno to call back with the footage. Denise's words from earlier kept playing in my head and I needed proof before I accused Adriana of something so bad. The room felt quiet with only the clock ticking on the wall and the rain starting soft outside so I paced to the window, looked out at the garden where Denise usually played but stayed empty now because she kept to her room more since the kidnap. I thought about her small face when she told me Adriana hugged the bad man and paid him and my stomach twisted because if it was true, I let a monster into my home. The phone rang fifteen minutes later and Bruno's voice came through rough. “I have the footage boss,” he said. “I’m sending it now. It's from a camera across the street from the warehouse. Though, you won't like it.”I opened the video on my laptop fast with my hands steady but my heart beating hard. The

Leonardo's POV I sat in my study that morning with papers spread on the desk and coffee gone cold beside me because I tried to work on the alliance details with Don Salvatore but my mind kept wandering to Genna and where she could be now. The ring on Adriana's finger flashed in my head every time I looked at my own hand and I felt doubt creep in slowly because marrying her felt right for business but wrong in my gut. I rubbed my eyes tired from no sleep, picked up the pen again, and tried to focus on the numbers. The door opened soft and Denise peeked in with her hair in braids and her favorite blue dress on. She walked slowly to the desk, climbed into the big chair opposite me, and sat with her legs swinging.“Morning Uncle Leo,” she said quietly.I set the pen down fast, leaned forward because she rarely came to my study alone these days. “Morning sweetheart,” I said, smiling real because seeing her always helped a little. “What’s up?”She looked at her hands in her lap, twisted

Genna's POV I sat against the cold wall in the dark basement where Marco kept me chained with my wrists sore from the metal and my body aching from the hard floor because days blurred together without any light to tell morning from night. I tried to count time by the meals they shoved through the slot but even that felt useless now with the bread stale and the water warm from sitting. I dozed when I could but sleep came fitful with dreams of Leonardo's face turning away in hate and Denise calling for me in the dark so I woke crying more often than not. My mind wandered back to the estate every hour with memories of warm beds and hot meals and arms around me at night but the cold here reminded me those days were gone forever.I thought about escaping a hundred times while I lay there pulling at the chains until my skin broke but the metal stayed strong and the door stayed locked. I screamed for help the first few days until my voice went hoarse but no one came except the silent gu

  • Love Amidst Shadows: A Mafia Romance Story    Chapter 59

Leonardo's POV I woke up that morning with the sun coming through the curtains and my bed feeling too big because Genna’s side stayed empty and cold since she left. I lay there a minute thinking about how quiet the house felt without her laugh or her footsteps or her voice calling Denise downstairs. I missed the way she made breakfast messy but happy with flour on her nose and Denise giggling while they cooked together. I missed her hugs when Denise fell asleep on her lap and the way she looked at me like I could do no wrong. Three days passed since Adriana brought Denise home and I tried to forget Genna because the men who took Denise said she and Marco sent them and that made the hate stronger than the missing. I told myself she was gone for good and I needed to move on.I got up, showered, dressed in black pants and a shirt, and went to the kitchen for coffee. Adriana was already there pouring her own cup with her hair tied back and a smile when she saw me. She sat beside me at
