Ericka read the new message. It was from Liam. She got out of bed and stretched to relieve the aches, doing some random exercises, then got out of bed, dragging her sandals, and headed to the bathroom. After her shower, Ericka went to the door and opened it, seeing a carton of milk by the side. She took the milk and went inside, locking the door several times. "Thanks. You shouldn't have bothered." Ericka poured the milk from the carton into a glass while replying to Liam's message. She waited a while, but there was no reply, although the checkmark indicating a reply was visible. Ericka opened her laptop and replied to a few emails, then checked some of her unfinished work. These past few days, after breakfast with a sandwich and coffee, almost three weeks ago in unit 2704, Ericka felt increasingly comfortable in this quiet apartment. This was the life she wanted. Even after learning the true identity of her one-of-a-kind neighbor, she felt safe. Never uncomfortable. Her relationship with Liam was strained. Ericka didn't want to interact too much with the werewolf, even though she knew, on days without a full moon, as Liam himself had said, he was just a freelance illustrator working from home. Liam also distanced himself from Ericka because he understood that, even though Ericka said she wasn't afraid, a sense of anxiety still lingered. It was a silent pact, binding them together in an unusual secret, but also keeping them separate in their own worlds. They made an unspoken agreement not to interfere in each other's affairs, but to strive to be good neighbors to each other. It wasn't difficult, it turned out. They were both introverts, had jobs that required focus and concentration in their respective areas, didn't like to chat, and didn't have friends or relatives who would occasionally come and cause a commotion in their respective units. Perfect. The sound of each unit's door opening and closing, the slow footsteps in the corridor until they disappeared at the beginning of the stairs at the end of the corridor, were sounds that became familiar to them. After two weeks, Ericka learned that the Blue Lavender apartment's residents were very small, no more than three people on each floor. Everyone stayed to sleep and keep to themselves, not socializing or knowing each other. "I know a debt collector on the third floor. He'd be gone for days, come home, and then sleep all day in his unit," Liam wrote. "He wore a patch over his right eye. Like a pirate." "I saw a middle-aged woman dressed in flashy clothes on the fifth floor. She was throwing out empty donut and yogurt boxes, lots of them," Ericka replied. Another day. "I won't be home for two days. Be careful and don't open the door to anyone unless you have an appointment," Liam wrote. "Okay. Thanks, and be careful too," Ericka replied. It wasn't a particularly regular routine, but it gradually became more familiar between Ericka and Liam. Since that morning with the sandwich and coffee, they hadn't seen each other face to face, even though they were always in their respective units. The occasional text message seemed sufficient, and Ericka was actually waiting for the next full moon to appear. Liam, on the other hand, understood what Ericka was thinking without needing to explain, and he too was preparing. A few days before the full moon arrived, Ericka heard louder noises coming from Liam's unit. Not the noises she'd heard when she first moved in, but the sounds of someone working on a carpenter. "What are you doing? I hear sawing and drilling coming from your place," Ericka wrote. "I am sorry. Are you disturbed? I'll try to be as quiet as possible," Liam replied. "Doing renovations?" Ericka asked curiously. "Just reinforcing the door and soundproofing the walls," Liam wrote. "Oh, okay." Three hours later, the noises stopped. "Done?" Ericka asked. "Not yet. Just taking a quick break and getting ready to buy coffee and snacks," Liam wrote. "I'm in the mood for some bread." "I have coffee and bread, if you want some." After writing the message, Ericka paused and stared blankly at her phone. Why had she written that? She was about to delete the message, but Liam was typing, and a reply appeared a second later. "I'm going. Too lazy to walk downstairs. Is it okay if I come to your unit?" Ericka read the message twice before replying. "It's okay. I'll make some coffee, and you can just open the door; I won't lock it." Ericka was grinding coffee beans when she heard the door open and her name called. "Come in. I'm in the kitchen," Ericka said. She frowned, realizing her voice was shaking slightly, as were her hands. She was nervous. Liam walked silently into the kitchen and held out a paper bag when he spotted Ericka at the counter. "Peanut butter and blueberries jam," Liam said. "Also chicken nuggets and macaroni and cheese from last night, if you don't mind." Ericka smiled awkwardly. "It's okay. I also have some leftover fruit salad from last night, if you'd like." Liam nodded and checked his watch. "It's not dinner time yet, but I guess that's fine, right?" Their face-to-face conversation was awkward, but it was natural and flowing. Ericka noticed Liam's appearance and complimented him inwardly. The man was wearing a loose white t-shirt with the words "Wolf (UN)Addict." It looked like a crude joke, but the image of a wolf crushed by a boulder was quite funny. The t-shirt was paired with worn jeans and a black bandana that held back his charcoal-black hair, contrasting sharply with his gray eyes. There were paint stains on his right cheek and neck, and he had a bit of sawdust in his hair. "Are you... okay?" Liam asked, staring intently at Ericka. Ericka returned his gaze, only briefly, then busied herself with stirring her coffee. "Yeah, I'm fine," Ericka replied. "What else could happen with a werewolf as a neighbor, before the full moon?" "Ah," Liam said sheepishly. "I'm sorry." Ericka chuckled. "Hey, why apologize? You lived here first. I'm the new arrival." Liam sat down on the dining chair and looked around. "Your place is lovely. Warm and bright. You're also very good at arranging furniture." "I rented this unit already in this condition," Ericka said. She brought two cups of hot, fragrant coffee to the dining table and handed one to Liam. "I don't know who lived there before, but all this furniture is included in the rent." "Very nice," Liam murmured, sniffing his coffee. "Smells great. Thanks for inviting me." "Nothing," Ericka said. "How are you? It's almost... the full moon." "Yeah," Liam said. "But it's just a regular full moon, it won't make me too cruel. But I'll keep an eye out, now that I have a neighbor." Ericka laughed, feeling a little more relaxed after taking a sip of her coffee. "I'm not moving, Liam, even if you force me. I don't have this remote anywhere else." Liam gave Ericka a curious look. He placed the coffee cup on the table after two small sips and cleared his throat, preparing for a question. "So, neighbor, what's your story?"The woman finally left as the sky began to lighten, a sign that morning was coming. She left, grumbling and dragging her steps.Old Bernard and Liam emerged from their hiding place in the bushes near the garbage dump, shaking dust from their clothes and moving their aching arms and legs."I've been watching that woman since yesterday. She's no ordinary homeless person. She doesn't smell bad," Old Bernard said. "Instead, she smells like flowers.""Uh, I thought so too," Liam said."No homeless person smells like flowers, and she's always digging through garbage. I'm sure she's disguised herself, but I'm not sure what kind of creature she is," Old Bernard grumbled."I'll keep an eye on her again tonight," Liam said. "The resident of 5012 has been watching from the rooftop because she's been feeling the surveillance for the past few days.""5012? Marlowe Adams? A kitsune hybrid who loves to eat tofu," Old Bernard muttered. "He must think it's his sister watching.""You know him?" Liam a
"My father was human and my mother was a kitsune. She left me with my father when I was two years old, and then she married another kitsune and gave birth to my younger sibling," Marlowe said with a dreamy look."Are your father and mother still alive?" Liam asked cautiously."My father died when I was eight, and then my mother came back and raised me. I lived with her and my younger sibling, a greedy and very selfish girl. She hated me because my mother, feeling guilty about me, spoiled me," Marlowe said.He looked up at the darkening sky, making the moon appear thinner."One day, after we were adults, I saved my younger sibling from a hunter attack, and after that, she got a little better, until she became pregnant. No one knows who the father of the baby is," Marlowe continued."The baby was strange and ferocious. At thirteen months old, he attacked my mother, and only then did I learn that the baby's father was a human possessed by a demon while he was with my sister. By the time
Irwin invited Liam to sprinkle rock salt around the apartment building that midnight, after Liam returned from the post office and told him what Wesley had said."Who do you think that guy is?" Liam asked."If it's not Daniel, I don't know who he is," Irwin said angrily.Liam showed the video Daniel had made for Ericka and showed it to Wesley, but the vegan vampire said the man who had inquired about renting the Lavender Apartment wasn't Daniel. He was older and looked sleepy."Are you sure this rock salt will protect the apartment?" Liam asked, sprinkling rock salt behind Irwin, re-covering the ground Irwin had already covered. "How does it work?""Actually, this rock salt is more effective at preventing demons or ghosts from breaking through the defenses, but I've added some other ingredients to it, plus some incantations, so it can prevent unauthorized entities from entering the apartment without going through me," Irwin said."Irwin, what if what Mr. Eldond said about the homeless
Liam's PoV"You know, Liam, maybe it's time for you and Ericka to make a deeper commitment," Irwin said seriously.I raised an eyebrow, questioning his meaning. "What do you mean by a deeper commitment?""You have to mark her," Irwin said again. "Now, she's more dependent on you, but I see, you don't seem to be able to let her go, do you?"I scratched the back of my neck, which wasn't itchy. Irwin was right. With the current situation, I couldn't take my eyes off Ericka at all. And in turn, she had opened up more to me.She never talked about moving or leaving again. But she also completely stopped leaving the apartment, even with me.Old Bernard had asked me why Ericka never came back, and he was furious when I told him about the people looking for her."So they're still curious," Old Bernard said angrily.Irwin stared at me intently. "Why? You don't want her to be your mate?""She's a mere human, and I'm worried," I said, sighing. "You know, even under normal circumstances, if I we
Liam's PoVEricka was no longer crying. She hugged me tightly when I found her crouched under the window in the second-floor hallway, terrified and pale.I carried her to her unit and sat her on the sofa. For a few moments, while I made her warm water with a little honey, she sat stiffly, motionless."Ericka," I greeted softly, handing her the warm water. She looked up at me and took the glass from my hand, slowly drinking it down. Then, her previously wet and empty eyes changed. She clicked her tongue loudly."I can't stay here," Ericka said firmly. "I have to move immediately. This place isn't safe for me anymore. That bastard has already gotten here, somehow he found out."A feeling of unease crept into my heart as I heard what Ericka said.Ericka's fear had made her reckless and somehow turned into a desire to run away again."Ericka," I said quietly. "Are you trying to run away again?"She glared at me fiercely. "Liam, he's wandering around outside, and I'm sure it's because that
"We've been here before," Emmie said, looking around. "There! That apartment! We passed it twice before, until we finally stopped at that crappy convenience store and the owner told us we had the wrong address.""But that weird detective gave us directions, and it led back here?" Daniel asked, confused. "Look around Green Hills and look for anything related to the color purple.""Everything in this area is called Green Hills," Emmie muttered, confused. "This is Green Harley Hills. Over there is Green Hills, next to that is Green Eagles Hills, and there's Green Heart Hills. Where should we even start looking?"Daniel scratched his head. "Damn! I don't think that old Alkon is as great as you say, Emmie.""Shut up, Daniel, don't swear. You'll regret it if he gets mad at you. I told you he's great," Emmie said, annoyed. "And you heard what he said, right, that he saw a vision of a woman like Ericka in this area.""And what about the man you said was Ericka's boyfriend?" Daniel asked scorn
