Chapter 3

“First Lieutenant Sofiah reporting for duty, Sir!”

In front of her, none other than her father, Major General Abdullah, Commander of Baqiah Air Force or BAF.

“Welcome to BAF. Your commanding officer is off duty due to overseas training. For now, your temporary commanding officer is Captain Muiz,” Major General Abdullah said.

“Captain Muiz, Lieutenant Sofiah is our new doctor.”

“Lieutenant Sofiah.” She shook hands with her commanding officer.

“Captain Muiz. Nice to meet you, Lieutenant Sofiah.”

“Nice to meet you too, Sir.”

“And Captain Mahmod is your medical supervisor.” Major General Abdullah introduced her supervisor.

“Lieutenant Sofiah.” She shook hands with her supervisor.

“Captain Mahmod. Nice to meet you.”

“Nice to meet you too, Sir.”

“We are looking forward to working with you, Lieutenant. Now, Captain Mahmod will take you to your assigned department,” Major General Abdullah said while looking proudly at his daughter.

“Thank you, Sir!”

Captain Mahmod took her around Baqiah Military Hospital. The hospital had three main departments which were Land Force, Navy and Air Force.

The first floor consisted of a registration room, emergency room, clinics, pharmacy and cafeteria.

The second floor consisted of wards for patients. The third floor consisted of surgery rooms and meeting rooms. The fourth floor consisted of offices for medical officers. The fifth floor consisted of offices for high-rank medical officers.

Captain Mahmod started giving explanations to Sofiah about her job scopes.

“We have a monthly medical check-up for the enlisted personnel soldiers. For the commanding officers, their medical check-up is every six months. We also have frequent emergency medical training inside aircraft and rescue training.”

“Copy, Sir.”

“Now, let me introduce you to our team.”

They walked inside the office for medical officers of BAF.

“Attention, everyone.”

“Salute, Captain!”

"At ease. So, today, we are very fortunate that we have a new doctor that has joined us. Let's welcome our new doctor, First Lieutenant Sofiah, daughter of Major General Abdullah.”

By hearing her father's name, they knew that they couldn't mess with her.

“Welcome, Lieutenant!”

“Thank you.”

All of them lined up to shake hands with her. The doctors were Captain Amar, Captain Munirah, Lieutenant Sharif, Lieutenant Haris and Lieutenant Maria.

“I hope all of you can get along with each other. Lieutenant Sofiah, do you have any questions?”

“No, Sir.”

“Then, I excuse myself as I have to attend a meeting.”

“Copy, Sir.”

Once Captain Mahmod left them, everyone was cautiously looking at her.

“Where is my table?” she asked them.

“Ah, here,” Lieutenant Haris replied while showing her table.

She smiled and walked towards her table.

The others were eager to ask a few questions to her but they hesitated. Captain Munirah gave a sign to Captain Amar asking him to start the conversation.

Captain Amar cleared his throat and took a deep breath.

“Where were you graduated?” he finally asked her.

She turned to look at them. “I graduated from Ireland,” she replied with a thin smile.

“Where were you completing housemanship?” he asked again.

“Russia.”

“You must be a good student, Lieutenant Sofiah,” Captain Munirah complimented her.

“Nah, not really. We’re colleagues. Just call me Fiya and no need to be so formal.”

“See! We don’t have to worry about her family background,” Lieutenant Haris blurted out, getting a smack on his head from Captain Amar.

“Oops! Sorry,” Lieutenant Haris quickly apologised with an awkward grin.

“Oh! So, you guys are afraid of my father?” she asked them with a teasing smile.

“A little bit,” Lieutenant Haris replied with a giggle.

She chuckled and said, “He’s just acting in front of you. At home, my mom rules over him. Oops! I just spilt the tea.”

They burst out laughing at her answer as they started feeling comfortable around her now.

But then, a nurse rushed into their room.

“Doctor! We have an emergency! A helicopter had an emergency landing! Four soldiers are severely injured! They’ll be arriving in five minutes!”

Everyone rushed out towards the emergency room for preparation. Since today was her first day, she just followed around.

In the emergency room, Captain Amar started giving instructions as he was the most senior doctor among them.

“Captain Munirah takes one patient. Lieutenant Sharif takes one patient. Lieutenant Haris and Lieutenant Maria take one patient. Lieutenant Sofiah, you are with me. We will take one patient. Do you copy that?!”

“Copy, Captain!”

“Now, let’s move!”

The patients had arrived and moved towards the emergency room. Everyone took one patient as instructed.

“Corporal Adam, can you listen to me?” Captain Amar asked the patient named, Corporal Adam.

Corporal Adam nodded his head.

“I will check your body now. Please tell me if you’re experiencing any pain.”

Captain Amar started checking his body by putting light pressure on each part of the body. Suddenly, he groaned in pain at the thigh.

“Are you experiencing pain here?” Captain Amar asked.

Corporal Adam nodded his head.

“Sofiah, please do an X-ray scan on the thigh.”

“Copy, Captain!”

What a nice first day! she said in her head.

After 5 months of working, Sofiah was getting used to the real military and medical world. This morning, she got a call from the air base. She had been commanded to come and meet her father.

“What's the matter, dad?”

“I have good news! Your commanding officer has come back from overseas training. Today, you will meet him.”

Sofiah froze on her seat as she didn’t feel that’s good news.

“And Captain Muiz is no longer your commanding officer.”

Then, a voice interrupted their conversation. “Good morning, Sir!”

She recognized that voice very well!

Oh, no! Please not him! she said in her head.
