Chapter 23

Author: Fresh Gardenia
As soon as the words escaped Daphne's lips, she understood immediately.

At a gathering like this, it wouldn't be difficult for Luke to gain entry. The Hardy family held considerable influence in Cavern City's business world and had a respectable standing in Bayshore City as well. Though they weren't on the Kingston family's level, they were not to be underestimated.

She had no interest in speaking with him. Turning to leave, she felt his hand close around her wrist.

"Daphne," his voice was low, almost pleading. "Can't you give me a chance to explain? Let's talk."

She turned back, meeting his gaze. "What's left to talk about?"

The night breeze brushed against her skin, clearing her thoughts. The sight of him only deepened her irritation.

His expression was pained. "I swear, I didn't know about Seraphine's IG posts. It was my fault for not setting boundaries. Daphne, just give me another chance."

She exhaled, pressing her fingers to her temple. Her face remained unreadable.

Luke disappeared for two days. When Daphne saw him again, she was out shopping with her best friend, Carrie Mendell. At around three o'clock, under the neon glow of a bar's flashing sign, Daphne saw Luke standing motionless, his eyes locked onto her. His gaze was red-rimmed, his lips trembling. They faced each other across the restless sea of city lights. He took a step forward.Carrie immediately stretched out her arms, blocking Daphne from view."It's okay." Daphne gently pulled her aside.Luke stopped a meter away. He didn't blink, didn't look away. His lips parted, but no words came out. In his eyes, there was something raw—something like longing, something like grief."I'm sorry."The words spilled out, and with them, his tears."I'm sorry, Daphne. I wasn't in my right mind when I said those things that night. I was wrong. Please, I'm begging you—please forgive me."His voice cracked with desperation."I'll give you everything. All the money, everything I have—just take

When he heard Daphne call out Harvey's name, Luke's anger intensified. Whatever guilt he'd felt toward Daphne dissolved completely."I'm telling you, she's nothing but a s—"He never got to finish.Harvey was faster. His fist landed hard against Luke's stomach, knocking the breath out of him. Before Luke could react, Harvey grabbed his tie and yanked it upward, forcing Luke's head back.Harvey's hand, tense and precise, showed the stark lines of bone and tendon under the skin. His voice was cold. "Watch your mouth."Luke let out a low grunt, his body folding as he slid against the wall. His hand clutched his abdomen, struggling to steady himself. Then Harvey's foot pressed down on his shoulder. Not too hard—yet. Just enough to make a point.Luke's brows twisted in pain. There was no rage, no wild aggression in Harvey's expression. Only a quiet, razor-sharp authority. And that made it worse.Soft-spoken people were the most terrifying when they were truly angry.Harvey looked

The night breeze swept through, tangling Daphne's hair. She raised a hand, tucking the loose strands behind her ear. A faint, distant smile played on her lips."You see," she said, "even now, you still don't understand me. We're not meant to be together anymore."She stepped back, intending to leave."Don't show up in front of me again."Luke reached for her wrist instinctively, but she moved with practiced ease, slipping from his grasp. He wasn't willing to let her go—not this easily. Deep down, he knew that if he let her walk away now, the chances of ever seeing her again would be close to none. His chest tightened with desperation. Then, in one swift motion, he grabbed her again, harder this time. The next second, she was pressed against the cold surface of the wall, her wrists pinned in his grip."Running away again?" His voice was low, rough around the edges, a dangerous amusement laced beneath it. He leaned in closer, his breath hot against her skin. "Do you really think

The city shimmered under the early evening lights, and its skyline was wrapped in a deepening veil of night. Luxury cars cruised toward the most opulent hotel in town.Harvey stepped out, dressed in a finely tailored black suit that accentuated his broad shoulders and lean waist. The handcrafted fabric caught the light subtly, exuding an understated elegance. His dark, piercing eyes were like the brightest stars against the night sky. Beneath the sharp bridge of his nose, his lips curved into a faint smile—effortlessly noble, effortlessly confident.Beside him, Daphne wore an off-shoulder evening gown in a shade of ice blue, the delicate fabric setting off the porcelain smoothness of her skin. The hem of her dress swayed with her every step, reminiscent of a quietly blooming orchid. Her hair was pinned up with effortless grace, a few loose strands brushing against her pale neck, lending her an unintentional allure. Sapphire earrings gleamed against the soft light, complementing h

"Daphne, who is he?!" Luke had just seen it—Daphne smiling, happy with this man. She had cut off all contact with him. Had it really been for this man? Seated on the stone bench, Daphne shot Harvey a look of mild reproach. This was his fault. He insisted on coming to watch the drama unfold. Harvey turned as well, exuding an air of quiet elegance. His gaze was calm but sharp. "And you are? What are you doing here?" A wave of unease crept up Luke's spine as he took in the man before him. He didn't know Harvey, but the way he stood close to Daphne, the unspoken sense of possession—it told him enough. Daphne's expression was impassive, her eyes cool as she met Luke's gaze. "We're over. You didn't have to follow me all the way here." But Luke wasn't ready to give up. His eyes darted between her and Harvey. "Daphne, I thought… I thought since things with Seraphine and I were completely over, I came here for you. We have too many memories together. We can't just erase
