Chapter 2

Author: Little Hedgehog
My first encounter with Benjamin was rather embarrassing.

I was about to leap off a bridge when he grabbed me and flung me to the ground.

He locked eyes with me. Instead of urging me to be strong like others might, he told me something entirely different. He said that the person I loved would always live in my heart from then on. With every beat, it was proof that we were both fighting to live.

He said I didn't have to let go of the past to move forward.

Like others carried dreams, I could carry my love deep within me. Each day I lived would be another step closer to the one I had lost.

After that, worried I might try to take my life again, he stayed by my side. No matter how much I ignored him, he never complained.

Under his tender loving care, I gradually stepped out of the inferno of grief. He helped me find the courage to walk back into the light.

That was the second year after we'd met.

Not long later, he confessed his feelings to me. He said that he loved me with utmost conviction.

I was so moved by his devotion that I didn't hesitate to agree. That day marked our first day as a couple.

The same day, I visited the cemetery with the couple rings that Samuel Harrison and I had bought together. Placing them on his grave, I told him I was ready to move forward and start a new chapter.

But I never imagined that the man I chose would one day use such a cruel method to test my sincerity.

Someone in the room hesitated and voiced concern, "Honestly, I think your plan is a bit extreme. Feigning illness might be easy to see through. What's more, if she truly believed you and tried to follow you in death, what if you weren't able to save her in time?"

Benjamin raised an eyebrow.

"This is the best way for her to prove her love for me. Even if it gets exposed, I'm confident Cherilyn won't hold it against me," he replied.

"Besides, if she'd been more passionate toward me, I wouldn't have to go to such lengths to test her."

He paused, drained the glass of wine in his hand yet again, then continued.

"All investments come with risks. I helped her move past her pain—I'm her savior from the outset. If she gives her life for me, so what?

"It's easy to claim true love with words. But it'll only show when she chooses me over everyone else."

I stood frozen, listening to his words that cut me like a blade. I felt my heart being sliced into a million pieces.

My heart ached so much I could barely breathe. Stumbling, I leaned against the wall to keep from collapsing.

That phone call—it had all been Benjamin's setup.

He wasn't sick at all. He just wanted me to die for him, to satisfy his twisted curiosity.

I didn't dare probe deeper—was he ever truly in love with me? Or was this all just his need to win? To boast that he made me abandon my past and sacrifice my future for him?

Closing my eyes in despair, a plan began to take shape in my mind.

Fine. Since he wanted to play this game, I would gladly play along.

I could paint the image of the devoted girlfriend he pictured and pretend to die for him. By then, we would see if that smug look would be wiped off his face.

I turned and left.

On the way home, my emotions finally got the best of me. Tears streamed down my face as I burst into uncontrollable sobs.

He had once promised he wouldn't pressure me. He'd said he wanted to save our most intimate moments for marriage.

Yet, here he was setting traps and blaming me for not jumping into them. Benjamin Zoller was such a vicious snake.

He told me he didn't mind, but turned around and told his friends otherwise. How utterly laughable.

If he thought staying with me for three years was a waste of time, why didn't he leave earlier? Why keep stringing me along until I couldn't imagine life without him?

I wiped my tears fiercely.

Good thing I managed to learn of his schemes ahead of time. I wasn't going to become a foolish pawn and let him lead me to destruction. I wasn't going to end my life for his twisted game.

The following year, I received a call from my father out of the blue.He told me he was gravely ill with little time left to live. He wanted me to come and spend some time with him.I rejected his wishes without giving it a second thought."When I was drowning in agony, you turned a blind eye to me. Now, you're expecting me to waste my time and energy fulfilling your demands? Life doesn't work that way."There was an extended silence on the other end of the line before he croaked out a hoarse apology.I hung up without another word. His apology was but a rug under which he could sweep his wrongdoings. From the moment he made those choices, he should have known he wouldn't be forgiven.A sudden wave of longing for my mother hit me. On a whim, I decided to visit her grave. On my way, I chatted with the cab driver about further updates on Benjamin. It turned out the incident had become a nationwide sensation. Regretting his actions, Benjamin had gone mad searching up and down for

Before Gigi could speak further, Benjamin grabbed her by the arm and cupped a hand over her mouth and nose.He looked at me again, pleading."Cherilyn, why don't you come down here? We can talk it out. There's still a chance to fix this."I smiled wryly."Benjamin, when I loved you the most, you were busy deceiving and toying with me. That kind of betrayal leaves me utterly hopeless.""I can't accept an ending like this, so I've decided to leave you. I don't want anything to do with you any longer."You saved my life once, and now it's time for me to give it back."I caught the rage in Gigi's eyes. I knew that after tonight, there would be no chance for the two of them to reconcile.Exposing their affair now would only amplify Benjamin's guilt over my death. That was the precise torment I wanted him to endure.Casting one final glance at the camera, I held my breath and clumsily leaped into the gushing river below.Beforehand, I had scheduled posts to appear on my "Cancer War

The day before I was to set my plan into action, I visited the cemetery to say one last goodbye to my mother.Perhaps she and Samuel were the only people on earth who had ever shown me what true warmth felt like, albeit fleeting. To truly become a strong person, I knew I would first have to learn to love myself.I sighed, mustering all my courage to make the call. But just then, an unexpected call from Gigi came through.I picked up the call and immediately heard suggestive sounds and Benjamin laughing on the other end of the line."I love you, Benjamin Zoller!" she yelled out triumphantly.Knowing her intention in pushing my buttons, I swallowed the revulsion I felt and hung up the call. I then sent Benjamin the photo of the tattoo I had previously saved."Gigi told me all about your relationship. I'll be waiting for you by the bridge."When he arrived, I was standing at the edge of the bridge. His voice was panicked. "Cherilyn, what are you trying to do? Please, don't do any

For three days in a row, Benjamin stayed obediently in the hospital. This seemed to frustrate Gigi, who reached out to me on social media."Are you the reason Benjamin isn't coming out? Have you been clinging tight to him?"Her boldness left me speechless."He's sick. He doesn't even need me clinging to him. Besides, he's my boyfriend. What does it have to do with you whether I cling to him or not?"In response, she sent me a picture of a tattoo on the inside of her arm. It was of two little figures nestled together, kissing in their embrace."Benjamin and I got this together. Of course, it has something to do with me."I looked at the design and recalled seeing something similar on Benjamin's arm at the beach. When I'd asked him about it, he'd told me that it was the two of us.It turned out to be a complete lie after all.Meanwhile, Gigi continued to provoke me over chat."You haven't been with him for long, so you might not know our story. The only reason Benjamin and I di

I sat in Benjamin's hospital room, reading yet another contemporary romance book. It was then that the memories of Benjamin's confession flooded in.That day, my father—who had ignored my whole existence since birth—flew into a rage. It was unacceptable for him that I was in a relationship with the notorious playboy Benjamin Zoller. He demanded I cut ties with him immediately. He said that if his only daughter were seen fooling around with an illegitimate child like Benjamin, it would bring him shame.I looked at him, unbothered."You don't even care about me. You're only upset because it hurts your reputation."My mother died giving birth to me, yet you've never once visited her grave. You showed not an ounce of care when my ex-boyfriend passed away. Now, when I've finally found a shred of happiness, you swoop in and expect me to sacrifice it for your pride. What gives you the right?"We got into a rather heated argument and ended up severing ties. That day, I was consumed by g

An innocent expression was sprawled all over his face, but my eyes caught a message from someone named "Baby" on his phone."You'll go out drinking with me tonight. Or else, I'll ignore you forever!"I smiled faintly."I understand. She's probably just upset about coming back to such terrible news."As he nodded in satisfaction, I snapped a photo of the edge of his hospital bed and posted it to the new social media account I'd just created. The caption read, "Day one of treatment. Watching my boyfriend look so fragile in his hospital bed tears me apart. Why is the world so unfair? Why am I forced to face such a cruel separation? I hope with all my heart that he recovers. I'm not ready to lose him."I stayed by his side the whole day, caring for him with my entire being.By evening, I was sitting by the window reading. Meanwhile, he kept glancing at his phone, his impatience growing.I didn't have to ask—it was definitely his "Baby" throwing a tantrum again. As I continued to f
