Clara's POV

"PayPal or Venmo?"

Jason Chadwick held Buddy in one arm while pulling up his payment QR code with the other.

Buddy started struggling because Jason was holding him too tightly.

"Put Buddy down! You're hurting him!"

I reached out to take Buddy, but Jason stepped back.

"Pay first."

I couldn't believe what I was hearing.

His chat history showed that he sent money to Sophia Johnston almost every day.

When she complained about getting caught in the rain, he immediately sent her 500 dollars.

When she said she couldn't get a table at the restaurant she wanted, he sent her another 900 dollars.

There were even more transfers for clothes and travel expenses.

The payment records between them were longer than all the messages we had exchanged during our five years together.

Buddy was a stray cat that Jason and I had rescued together in college.

We paid for his treatment and raised him for four years.

Now Buddy was old, yet Jason insisted he was my cat.

He held Buddy tightly and demanded that I pay him.

Buddy's cries became louder and sharper.

Panicked, I quickly pulled out my phone.

Before I could scan the code and pay, someone knocked on the door.

Sophia stood outside and handed Jason a fancy gift box.

"Mr. Chadwick, thank you for helping me out with those drinks last night. This is just a little thank-you gift."

Inside was a box of cute cartoon-shaped cookies.

Jason smiled with surprise and thanked her gently.

Sophia looked at Buddy.

"So this is Buddy? He's so adorable..."

The moment she praised him, Jason placed Buddy into her arms.

But Buddy had always been shy around strangers. He hated being held by people he didn't know, and Sophia clearly didn't know how to hold a cat.

Within seconds, Buddy scratched her twice.

She cried out in pain and let go of him.

Her eyes instantly filled with tears.

Jason grabbed her arm right away.

"Are you okay? Does it hurt?"

The scratches were so light that they didn't even bleed. Still, he grabbed his car keys.

"I'll take you to the hospital."

As he rushed to the door, he turned back and said coldly, "This cat actually hurts people. If he's this impossible to control, then just give him away."

Buddy trembled in my arms as I held him close and tried to comfort him.

I listened to Jason's heartless words.

Looking at their tightly linked hands, I remembered all those payment records.

"Don't you know Buddy is shy around strangers? I'm never giving him away. Just leave. We're done."

Jason froze in shock.

He quickly softened his voice and gently brushed my hair back.

"I was too angry just now. We're getting married next month. Don't say things like that."

After a short pause, he continued, "But we don't need to keep a pet that hurts people. You need to apologize to Sophia for today. Then you need to find Buddy a new home. Since she got hurt, send her 800 dollars for medical bills and emotional distress."

After saying that, he slammed the door shut.

I slid down the wall and sat on the floor, holding Buddy as I cried.

I didn't know how long I cried before I finally stopped.

Then I stood up, saved copies of Jason's chat records from my computer, packed all of his things, left every box outside the door, and drove straight to the wedding planning company.

"Ms. Vernon, are you sure you want to cancel next month's wedding?"

But once Jason finally had money, he convinced himself that helping Sophia was the same as making up for failing me.It made him feel less guilty. After that, helping her became a habit. He brought her a glass of water every day.He kept sending her money. He paid for her career, helped her start a business, and even bought her a house. The moment they truly crossed the line was on my birthday. She got drunk that night. And he couldn't control himself."I'm sorry, Clara. I planned to cut ties with her after we got married. Then we'd live a good life together, and I'd give you all my money. I really did love you. But you were too independent. You didn't need me at all. She was different. She admired me. She made me feel important..."His words made me sick.In the end, he even blamed me for his cheating. At first, he thought I wasn't independent enough.Later, he said I was too independent.I felt so disgusted that I didn't even want to slap him.I looked at him with nothing but disgust

Jason's tone was firm and unwavering."I don't."Sophia couldn't hold back her tears."So you really never had any feelings for me? If you didn't like me at all, then why did you spend so much time on me?"Jason looked conflicted. He almost felt sorry for her.But before he could answer, his assistant called. While reviewing the security footage, the assistant discovered the truth.Sophia had never given Buddy to another family. She had simply abandoned him outside the apartment building. She had even cut off his collar so no one could contact his owner.Sophia also had a doctor friend. She had known from the beginning that my car accident was real. But she had lied to Jason anyway. When Jason learned the truth, he flew into a rage.He dragged Sophia into the OB-GYN department and tried to force her to have an abortion.Sophia refused. Jason completely lost control and slapped her repeatedly."Why did you lie? Why did you do this to Clara? Do you know how important Buddy was to her? Sh

I thought I had made myself perfectly clear. But to my surprise, Jason actually moved to Riverport.Every day, he came up with a new way to "accidentally" run into me.Whenever I went to the hospital for a checkup, he was waiting outside. When I left for work or came home, he stood outside my office, hoping to drive me.He even showed me pictures of the little kitten."I've been taking good care of him. I want you to give him a name. I even show him your picture every day. Once we live together again, he won't be shy around you anymore."I ignored him. But he never got angry.Instead, he brought me a different gift every day.One day it was peeled seafood. The next day it was expensive jewelry.I didn't even bother looking at any of it.He hurried to explain, "I bought all of this because I wanted to. You don't have to pay me back. All these years, I never bought you nice gifts. I never peeled seafood for you. I never even drove you to work. I really want to make it up to you now."If

I frowned. Jason's apology made me feel sick. It sounded fake."I thought you were just saying you'd been hit by a car because you were upset. I didn't know you were pregnant. But we're still young. We can start over. You'll have another baby someday."He handed me the pet carrier beside him."I bought you another kitten. It looks a lot like Buddy. Let's raise this one together. I won't ask you to split the costs anymore."The little kitten looked at me curiously from inside the carrier. His words filled me with anger.I slapped him across the face."Can my child and Buddy just be replaced that easily? They just died, and you dare to brush it off by saying, 'Just get another one'?"Jason stood there with a pale face.He didn't argue. Instead, he quietly asked, "Did your hand hurt when you slapped me?"He carefully reached for my hand. I pulled it away without hesitation."Stay away from me."I didn't want to waste another word on him. I turned and walked away.Jason called after me, hi

Jason rushed over and grabbed the nurse by the shoulders. His eyes were red."Who did you just say?"The nurse jumped in surprise and looked at him strangely."Ms. Clara Vernon."Her firm answer left Jason frozen. The cigarette burned all the way down to his fingers, but he didn't seem to feel the pain. His face turned pale as he whispered, "How is that possible? I thought the accident was fake."After letting go of the nurse, he shakily told his assistant to investigate the accident. Then he went to find Clara's medical records. That was when he discovered the police had already released the hit-and-run driver's dashcam footage while he was vacationing in Evermount with Sophia. The video showed Clara simply walking down the street when the car slammed into her and threw her several yards through the air.Blood covered the ground. He watched as she picked up her phone.A few moments later, her face was soaked. He couldn't tell if it was rain or tears. That call had been to him.Jason s

Blood slowly spread beneath me.The heavy rain had emptied the streets. There wasn't a single person around.I was in so much pain that even my voice shook."I really was hit by a car. Jason... I'm right outside our apartment complex..."Just then, I heard the sound of a hair dryer through the phone.Sophia asked, "Have you ever dried Clara's hair for her?"Jason chuckled."You're the only one who's spoiled enough to make me dry your hair.""So I'm the first person you've ever done that for?""Yeah. And the only one."The call ended. My heart broke. With trembling hands, I called 911. Then everything went black.I had a long dream.I dreamed about our college days. Back then, Jason wouldn't even spend 20 dollars on a meal for himself. But he never hesitated to use all the money from his part-time job to buy me a gift worth about 1,000 dollars.I also dreamed about the day we brought Buddy home. Jason smiled as he took a picture of the three of us together. Then I dreamed about the day
