Chapter 5

Author: Charleston Step
Camille started to regret her decision.

As she watched more and more sharks gather, all she wanted to do was jump into the water herself.

"Camille, don't do anything rash," Stellan said as he pulled her back, his voice soft and gentle. "He's a merman. The sharks are his friends. He'll be fine."

His melodious voice seemed to echo from somewhere deep in her memories. After a moment's hesitation, she decided to listen to Stellan.

But those sharks weren't Ansel's friends at all.

Facing the bloodthirsty predators, he had no choice but to swim deeper into the sea, hoping to find a cave where he could hide. Wanting to swim faster so he could escape as quickly as possible, he endured the excruciating pain and transformed his legs into his tail.

But the sharks were too fast, and they pursued him relentlessly.

Just as they were about to catch up to him, faint glimmers of light appeared ahead. A pod of whales emerged, shielding him from the sharks.

And behind the whales… were none other than his family!

Thinking his eyes were playing tricks on him, Ansel blinked again and again. Only then was he sure—his parents and all six of his older siblings had come for him.

"Seven, how did you end up in such a terrible state? Didn't you write to us saying you were doing well and were very happy?"

His family gathered around him, their hearts breaking as anger and alarm overwhelmed them. Apart from the wound on his arm, he had such a hollow and desolate look in his eyes, as if he'd given up all hope. Not a single trace of happiness could be found in his expression.

Ansel let out a self-deprecating laugh.

At first, the letters he'd sent home with the seagulls had all been sincere. Back then, he'd written with a smile, "The sea is salty, but love is sweet."

Despite feeling torn, he'd admitted that though he missed home, he still wanted to stay behind and be with Camille, even after fulfilling all her wishes.

It wasn't until Stellan returned that Ansel learned that love could also taste so salty, so bitter, and so full of pain.

Merfolk couldn't lie, so he'd learned to share only the good news and keep the bad to himself.

"Don't worry," Ansel said softly. "Just three more wishes, and I can come home."

How could his family not worry? But they understood that unless Ansel fulfilled his benefactor's wishes, he wouldn't be able to reclaim his soul, and thus he wouldn't be able to return home.

When they learned that Camille's latest wish was to retrieve the necklace, they mobilized every creature in the ocean to search for it. Before long, a crab appeared, clutching the diamond pendant in its pincers.

When Ansel finally surfaced, everyone aboard the ship stared as though they'd witnessed a miracle. Even those who had always mocked him fell silent. They simply shook their heads, thinking that he was a huge fool—foolish enough to throw his life away for a woman who had cast him aside at a moment's notice.

Only Stellan's expression darkened. He couldn't understand how the merman had such good luck, managing to survive even in such treacherous waters.

For once, however, Camille paid no attention to Stellan's mood. Instead, she grabbed a thick towel and hurried over to the drenched and miserable-looking Ansel.

But Ansel sidestepped her. He merely placed the necklace in her open palm without touching her.

"Best wishes to you both. You still have two wishes left. Find me when you've decided what you want."

"I… I wasn't trying to make a scene. I asked if you'd ever loved me last time, but you didn't answer. I just wanted to know."Ansel looked at Camille in surprise. "I didn't answer because it was a stupid question! I have someone I love now. Why would I dwell on the past and answer a question like that?"The merfolk princess held Ansel's hand and suggested, "If you're bored, find something to do. Don't you humans have work to do? If you're that bored, go work overtime."Ansel burst out laughing.Humiliated, Camille impulsively shot back, her voice edged with hostility, "Three years ago, Ansel was almost hunted down and killed, and I was the one who saved him. Where were you back then? Are you sure you can protect him for the rest of his life?"But the merfolk princess wasn't provoked."After that incident, Seven went ashore to fulfill your 1,001 wishes and win back his soul. Meanwhile, I struck a deal with your human government for a long-term scientific research partnership."We

"Leave, and never come back. That's my wish."Camille's voice trembled. "Then… what about the other 1,000 wishes? Let me fulfill those before I leave. Please?""Every other wish is the same. I never want to see you again!" Ansel replied firmly.Camille squeezed her eyes shut, fighting back her tears, but she still couldn't bring herself to give up."Ansel, I know I've hurt you, but I came all this way because I really want to make things right. Do you have any idea how much pain I'm in right now? Every word I speak and every breath I take feel like blades slicing through my throat. I've sacrificed so much for you…"Ansel found it laughable."Really? You can't even handle this little bit of pain?" he sneered. "Do you have any idea what I went through just to take human form and walk on land? Every step felt like walking on broken glass. For three years, I never said a word about it because I didn't want you to feel guilty."Camille stared at him in shock. He spoke of it so casua

It was even more beautiful than she'd imagined, vibrant and full of color.Colorful coral reefs stretched across the ocean floor while beautiful little fish darted past. Castles made of pearls and seashells glittered like something straight out of a fairy tale. Not wanting to barge in, she waited patiently inside the submarine. At last, the figure she'd been longing to see appeared.Ansel glided through the water with an effortless flick of his crimson tail. His hair curled softly in the current, and his radiant smile was back.Camille stared at him, entranced. She couldn't remember how long it had been since she'd last seen him look so genuinely happy.Looking back, someone like her normally would have refused when he begged her to take him with her, however handsome he was. But something about the merman felt strangely familiar, and she just couldn't bring herself to turn him down. Now she understood why. They'd crossed paths ten years ago, and each had saved the other's life.

A full week passed with no word from Ansel, and Camille was running out of patience. That familiar feeling of panic and helplessness was creeping back in.Suddenly, something splattered against the window behind her. Camille turned and stared in disbelief as a flock of birds covered the glass in droppings, leaving it a stinking mess. Then the bird leading the flock dropped a letter through the open window. Maybe it was her imagination, but the bird seemed to give her a disdainful look before flying off, as if it thought she was beneath it.Pinching her nose, Camille picked up the letter. She'd expected Ansel to leave an address so she could go find him and see him in person. The letter did reveal where he had gone, but what she read made her heart sink."Camille, you saved my life back then, so fulfilling your 1,001 wishes was my way of repaying you. Now that I've fulfilled them all, I owe you nothing. I'm returning to the sea. We'll never see each other again.P.S. You saw the su

No wonder the police had said no one came out of the mansion after the fire broke out.Now Camille understood how Ansel had escaped. She felt relieved to learn that he was safe, and it seemed he had left only because he'd had no other choice. The man she loved and the man who had saved her life had been the same person all along. She couldn't have asked for better news.As for Stellan, his lies, vanity, and ruthless scheming were more than enough reason for Camille to make him pay."Turn yourselves in to the police, all of you," she said coldly. Her gaze swept over Stellan and the bodyguards, all of whom had gone pale."One more thing. If you keep Ansel's secret, you might still live. But if you decide to tell anyone…" She smiled faintly. "Go ahead and see what it's like to wish you were dead."She regained her composure, feeling back in control.By the time the sun rose and the city fully woke up, Camille was already working in her top-floor executive office. She hadn't handed

"Ansel's voice is so hoarse. How could he possibly be the one who saved you?" he protested.Camille froze. Before Stellan could say anything else, Derek stepped forward."Ms. Ellery, I think I know why. According to legend, merfolk who want to take human form and walk on land have to trade away their most treasured possession to a witch. I suspect Mr. Wells gave up his voice."Suddenly, everything made sense."Ansel… why didn't you tell me?" Camille whispered, her voice trembling. "Why didn't you tell me it was you who saved me?"She was overwhelmed with anguish. Then she realized that she'd never told Ansel about what had happened ten years ago. They had spent three years together, yet she had never truly opened up to him. When it came to her own life, she had never thought it necessary to share much with him. Yet Ansel had always been the one who gave her everything without holding back. The video continued. No matter how many times Ansel promised to keep the secret, Stellan
