*ERIC*

It’s been about two weeks since I last saw or heard from Jamira. I had spent the night at her friend’s place.

I could have gone anywhere, but I just couldn’t resist her. Things are always so simple when we’re together. I appreciated that I didn’t have to think around her. I could just be myself. Time seemed to slow down with her, making every moment feel like a gift.

Despite missing her, I couldn’t do much about it. Between work, therapy, Kayla’s dance class, and Kacie, I was always busy. Early mornings and late nights became my norm. The only positive aspect was that we were almost finished with the case that had to be split up.

The deadline had to be extended to ensure accuracy. We also had other cases to work on.

Hopefully, this is the last day I’ll have to look at it. It’s consumed so much of my time that I don’t think I’ve had a good night’s rest in ages.

I got up from my desk to get some coffee when my phone rang.

“Hello?”

“E, don’t forget we have that sleepover thing tonight at Kayla’s school.”

Dammit! I’d forgotten about that. I remembered her saying she wanted to wear matching pajamas, but I couldn’t recall when she had said it.

“Shit! That was tonight?”

“Oh my god, Eric. Don’t tell me you forgot.”

“Kace, can’t you two just go? You know I’m swamped with this case at work and I have meetings lined up and…”

“And you promised her.”

I groaned. I had promised Kayla I’d make it. I don’t know what’s with that little girl. I can never say no to her, and she refuses to accept that I have my own responsibilities. It feels like she’s my child too. Nobody warned me about this part.

“Alright, I’ll see what I can do.”

“Thanks so much, brother!”

“Yeah, yeah, you gotta start doing things yourself, Kacie. She’s your daughter.”

“Why would I do that when she has the world’s greatest uncle to handle it?”

I couldn’t help but laugh at that because it’s absolutely true. Ever since they both moved in with me, she’s been constantly trying to get me to do things with her. She doesn’t even bother asking her mom anymore.

“Bye, Kacie.”

“I love you too.”

I was on my way to get coffee when I saw Walt. I tried to walk past him, but of course, he wouldn’t let that happen. He was quite imposing at times.

“Playboy,” he yelled down the hall as he approached me.

“Keep it down, Walt. I have a reputation,” I whispered.

It was as if he hadn’t heard a thing I had just said. He just went on yelling again.

“Yeah, that one girl you had was fine as hell.”

My cheeks flushed with embarrassment. What was his problem? He’d always tried to embarrass me whenever he got the chance, but this was too much.

I was just about to say something to him when he whispered, “Yeah, word around the office is you’ve been a hardass and you ain’t getting no play.”

“Angie even offered to ‘take one for the team,’” he continued, “but you don’t want her. She’s a pass-around. Heard four dudes already hit that, and it was… eh.”

I covered my mouth and gasped.

“Four? Do you know their names? Wait, no, how do you know this? Do you ever work?”

“Semantics, brother. So far, I hear it’s Derrick and Kevin. I’m still trying to figure out the other two.”

My mouth dropped open in utter shock and disbelief.

“I mean, yeah, I could see Kevin. He seems right up her alley, but Derrick… what no! Why am I in the office gossip? And why aren’t you working?”

“I’m working on your image, Duh,” he laughed.

I just stared at him, because no way was I taking him seriously. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t enjoy the gossip, though. It’s a nice break from work sometimes when I’m not the topic.

“You know, I don’t care about that kind of stuff.”

“Well, it’s a good thing you have me here, brother. Because I got your back.”

I shrugged him off and started walking away until I remembered I had to let him know he might have to lock up tonight.

“Oh, by the way, I need you to lock up tonight. Kayla has a sleepover at her school and wants me to go.”

“What? Wait, so Kacie’s going to be there?”

“It’s her daughter. I hope she’s there.”

My eyes widened at the same time as his. I realized I could send him in my place. Since he has a thing for Kacie, it’ll give him an excuse to get close to her. I think we had the same idea.

“You think I could…” he started.

“You want to go with her and I lock up?”

He smiled like a little girl around her crush.

“Hell yeah… but what about that girl you’re seeing?”

“What about her?”

“She works there, won’t she be there?”

Shit! She would be there, and these events were a way for me to casually “run” into her without seeming too desperate. It didn’t matter; she always knew I wanted to see her, to be with her, and hold her.

“We’ll just hurry and get out of here together then.”

We worked and got through the rest of the day. The last person left around 5:40 p.m., giving us enough time to tidy up, do an office sweep, and get ready for the sleepover. Walt always kept clothes in his trunk for some reason or another, so he just followed me home and got ready there.

*JAMIRA* Ayana and I talked and laughed as she recounted the events from her date and everything that happened afterwards. That girl still hadn’t changed. “Okay, but why didn’t you call me? I would’ve picked you up.” “Girl you too busy playing house with that man all up in your business.” “You see where that got me.” We both laughed. “Speaking of that, how’s the baby?” “He’s fine. I’m just ready for him to come already.” “Just hang in there girl.” I smiled. It’s amazing how a simple phrase can make you feel better than you did before. Even though I was happy to be talking to Ayana, my mind stayed on Eric. Ever since Kacie left he’s been down in the dumps. I thought if I surprised him at work, he’d feel at least a little better. Then Walt was acting strange like he didn’t want to be bothered. Eric would never say it, but I could tell he felt that the whole interaction was…off. “Hello, hello?” Her voice pulled me away from my thoughts. For a moment I’d fo

  • Love On Ice   The Silence

*ERIC* The move was not only bittersweet, but it made the condo feel bigger in a way I hadn’t imagined possible. The commotion in the morning, the laughter, even the routine I’d gotten accustomed to were all nonexistent now. I sat on the couch watching the game when Jamira came and sat next to me. She took my hand into hers and looked at me for a while before speaking. “You know we should do something nice for Kacie.” I nodded my head not fully processing what she was saying. She didn’t press the issue. I’m glad she didn’t. She just motioned for me to lift my legs up and started massaging my feet. That did more than I expected, actually. It was like most of the tension that had been building over the months was finally starting to ease. The rest of it melted away when I got in the shower. The water ran down my body and took my troubles with it. When I got out I found Jamira had already fallen asleep. I slid in next to her, not trying to wake her up. That night

*AYANA* “Ayana, if you don’t go back in the house and change, we’re not going anywhere.” “What’s wrong with it?” “If I show you what’s wrong with it, we’ll never make it out.” I rolled my eyes at him. Whose dad is this man? For the record, it’s nothing but a little cleavage. Sometimes the titty is the outfit. I thought it was cute. I stepped out in a denim mini skirt with a corset top and a nice pair of heels. I will admit that top was a size or two too small, but that’s because I wanted that lift. Jeremy didn’t appreciate it. He’s always thinking these thirsty dudes are looking at me. I keep telling him that’s none of his concern. He just keeps insisting on telling me to change my clothes. I went inside and found a cute bodycon dress that stopped mid-thigh. It was red with black straps. I paired it with a black leather jacket and my black chunky heels. When I stepped outside, he smirked and gave his ‘nod of approval’. He opened my door and helped me into my seat. “

*CHRIS* The next day, I went into work with dinner still on my mind. I never knew my mom was in such a state. She seemed perfectly fine when she came to visit me at the hospital. She even helped me around the room during my recovery. I hadn’t known she’d been lying. Neither did I know that she lied to my dad too. I wondered what else they weren’t telling me since I left last night. That unsettling flutter in my stomach hadn’t left either. It’s safe to say I didn’t sleep. Between me trying to find Mira and worrying about my mom, I might be on the verge of losing my mind myself. I didn’t talk to my dad about it because it was already late, so I ended up leaving, but I intended to talk to him about it today. The morning rush came early, and we were all busy trying to get everyone in and out. It wasn’t until around one o’clock that I was able to get enough breathing room to go address things. I went down the hall and knocked on his door. “Come in.” I walked in and sa

  • Love On Ice   Coming Back

*CHRIS* For weeks I’ve been working to escape my own thoughts of Jamira. She really thinks I’m going to just lay down and accept the fact that she wants to leave? She has life all fucked up. The last time we spoke I made sure to let her know this wasn’t over. I intend to show her exactly what I mean. I’d been riding past her school looking for her for a week just to finally call and find out she doesn’t even work there anymore. That made my mission to find her harder, but not impossible. The following week I rode around and when I went to get some gas, I just so happened to catch her bald-headed ass friend Ayana. I made sure she didn’t notice me by sliding a little down in my seat when she exited the car. She was with a medium-built, medium-brown man with dreads and just a few inches taller than her. I wanted to throw my shoe at the back of her head. It took all of ten minutes for them to come out and get in the car. I waited another five minutes before I left. I

  • Love On Ice   Discomfort (Part 2)

*ERIC* Two cars. Three people carrying the same destination. Three completely different silences. As I pulled onto the road toward my parents’ house, I couldn’t shake the feeling that dinner wasn’t going to end the way any of us hoped. I didn’t know what to expect, but I knew what I didn’t want. The tension was so thick it felt wrong walking inside someone else’s home like that. I slowly pulled into the driveway, stretching every agonizing minute. Jamira placed her hand on top of mine. I let out a deep breath that I’d been holding the entire ride over. I stopped the car and got out. As I walked over to the passenger side to let Jamira out, my heart started beating fast as my anticipation grew. I forced a smile on my face as I grabbed her hand and led her to the door. This time, we showed ourselves inside. My dad was on the couch watching football while yelling out to my mom, who was in the kitchen finishing up dinner and preparing dessert. “Kitty, your kids
