I woke up and stretched to the hustle and bustle of people old and young moving around and gathering their belongings. I looked down at my watch and it read 6:50 a.m. I looked over to see that Eric was still asleep and so was Walt, Kayla, and her mom. Man, were they close. I got up and laid the blanket back on Eric as not to disturb him. I went to go find Malaysia and the other committee members to find out what’s going on. I finally found Malaysia. She was still with Malik’s dad. I figured once she got her chance, she was going to be that man’s number one fan. “Excuse me, I need to borrow her for a second,” I said while pulling her towards me. Malik’s dad nodded and went back to packing their things. “What’s going on? We were supposed to be serving them breakfast and sending them on their way.” “Rose went to go get it. Said she tried to order it but something about the order being too big. Girl, I don’t know.” I nodded in the direction she came from and asked, “So what happened there?” “Girl, no. I can’t talk about it here, but I can text you later.” I laughed at that. Malaysia was always good for a good laugh and some tea. I just knew this was going to be hot. “Did you check on the families in the gym?” “I thought Teresa and Carmen were in there.” “Yeah, but girl, you know we do all the work.” “Right, so let them for a change.” She was right. It would be nice for them to support us since we do everything from the planning to decorating to assigning tasks and even assisting with said tasks. I can’t help it, I like to stay busy and help. It makes me feel useful. “OK, well, I’m gonna go set up the table for breakfast when Rose gets back.” “Well, you know where to find me if you need me.” “Try not to choke,” I joked as I turned to go to the cafeteria to look for a folding table. I got about halfway down the hall before there was a pull on my hand. I turned around to see Eric. “What is with you leaving me in the morning?” “If I stayed, I’d never be able to leave.” “What’s wrong with that?” “It’s a hostage situation.” “Don’t I treat you well?” “Maybe,” I said, smiling. He pulled me close to his chest and kissed my forehead. Then he placed his hand on my lower back and led me to my classroom again. Instantly having a flashback, I let my intrusive thought slip. “I’m sore.” “What?” “Oh… I thought you were… so I said I was sore because… Eric, I’m not bending over that desk again.” He put his hand on his chest and gasped. “What kind of a freak do you take me for?” “You do have a problem.” “That only you can solve; we’ve been over this.” “So why are we here?” He reached out and grabbed my hands and pulled me close to him. “I want to talk to you about something, but I want to do it over dinner, dessert, you know something nice.” I blushed at the thought of Eric taking me on a date. “Is that an invitation?” “Depends, are you accepting?” “Gladly,” I said, smiling wider than I intended. He held me in his arms for a few minutes before I remembered why I left everyone in the first place. “Oh my god, I forgot about the tables.” I left the room and went back towards the auditorium. I noticed people with bags in their hands and realized Rose was back. “Jamira! A little help, I was looking for you.” I ran over to her side and started handing out to-go bags with food in them. “How much did you order?” “Hopefully enough. I couldn’t remember the count, so I just threw a number out there.” “Have Teresa and Carmen opened the gym doors for the people in there to come?” “I’m not sure.” “Next event, we’re getting walkie-talkies; we need better communication.” She nodded as we continued to work and pass out breakfast. When we were done and sure that everyone had left the building, we met up with the other committee members to clean up and do a final sweep to make sure everything looked good. We stayed in the parking lot for a few minutes just to talk and then said our goodbyes as we parted ways. As I drove home all the memories came flooding back. I didn’t want to be there. But until I had a plan I wasn’t going to make a big deal out of it. Relief washed over me when I realized I was the only one there. I wanted to forget everything hell I’d be willing to erase the part of my brain that won’t let me forget. I took a shower right away to wash off last night and ease my aching body from those chairs. I came out the shower relaxed. I definitely needed that. I looked around the townhouse and realized I hadn’t had the chance to clean the place. So I did just that to stay busy and hopefully get something done. Afterwards I put on some laundry and moved to the kitchen to cook. I’d been craving chicken and dumplings with some roasted vegetables. The aroma of the food swirled in the air making my senses go crazy. When the food was done I fixed me a plate and decided to call Ayana to check on her. It went to voicemail. I guess she’s busy. I’m sure she’ll call back later. I finished eating and decided to curl up and catch up on a book I’d been reading a while back. I suddenly dozed off. I guess I was more tired than I thought. Sleep claimed me fast.*CHRIS* I’ve been calling Mira a lot lately. After the conversation with my dad, I realized that I had to get her back. It’s not like I was going to let her go without a fight to begin with, but something about his words that really hit hard for me. ‘When you have a good girl, you do everything you can to keep ‘em.’ That’s all I could think about. Don’t get me wrong it’s not like I wanted to. Deep down, I knew this was my fault. Had I kept it in my pants I’m sure we’d still be in the townhouse together. But also, had it not been for that crunchy bitch Ayana, she would’ve never met that motherfucker at the club. I still want to know what he said to get her attention. She didn’t come back home with me until about four months into us dating. One night is all it took for this bastard to get in her panties. I couldn’t tell you what pissed me off more. The fact that it was sudden, the fact that she actually likes him, the fact that she kept going back, or the fact that she’s actual
*ERIC* After Jamira showed up, I can’t lie, I felt better about all the stuff that’s been going on lately. She stayed a while to talk and help with filing a few things for me. I actually like having her here. She’s really helpful. After going through a few cases and finishing up on two of them, I decided I needed a break. I went to go to Walt’s office. Once I got to the door, Dina, yet again was all in Walt’s face. She was sitting on the armrest of his chair with her hand on his chest. Seriously, what do these two do all day? “Dina, leave!” She hesitated and looked between us before running out of his office. Walt threw his hands up and grunted. “Why?” “Dina’s not worth the distraction.” Walt just stared at me a few seconds before returning back to work. “Hey, so I was wondering how Kacie was settling into her new place?” He paused. “Wouldn’t know anything about it.” “How was she when you helped her move the last of it?” “Fine.” “I called and she tri
*JAMIRA* Ayana and I talked and laughed as she recounted the events from her date and everything that happened afterwards. That girl still hadn’t changed. “Okay, but why didn’t you call me? I would’ve picked you up.” “Girl you too busy playing house with that man all up in your business.” “You see where that got me.” We both laughed. “Speaking of that, how’s the baby?” “He’s fine. I’m just ready for him to come already.” “Just hang in there girl.” I smiled. It’s amazing how a simple phrase can make you feel better than you did before. Even though I was happy to be talking to Ayana, my mind stayed on Eric. Ever since Kacie left he’s been down in the dumps. I thought if I surprised him at work, he’d feel at least a little better. Then Walt was acting strange like he didn’t want to be bothered. Eric would never say it, but I could tell he felt that the whole interaction was…off. “Hello, hello?” Her voice pulled me away from my thoughts. For a moment I’d fo
*ERIC* The move was not only bittersweet, but it made the condo feel bigger in a way I hadn’t imagined possible. The commotion in the morning, the laughter, even the routine I’d gotten accustomed to were all nonexistent now. I sat on the couch watching the game when Jamira came and sat next to me. She took my hand into hers and looked at me for a while before speaking. “You know we should do something nice for Kacie.” I nodded my head not fully processing what she was saying. She didn’t press the issue. I’m glad she didn’t. She just motioned for me to lift my legs up and started massaging my feet. That did more than I expected, actually. It was like most of the tension that had been building over the months was finally starting to ease. The rest of it melted away when I got in the shower. The water ran down my body and took my troubles with it. When I got out I found Jamira had already fallen asleep. I slid in next to her, not trying to wake her up. That night
*AYANA* “Ayana, if you don’t go back in the house and change, we’re not going anywhere.” “What’s wrong with it?” “If I show you what’s wrong with it, we’ll never make it out.” I rolled my eyes at him. Whose dad is this man? For the record, it’s nothing but a little cleavage. Sometimes the titty is the outfit. I thought it was cute. I stepped out in a denim mini skirt with a corset top and a nice pair of heels. I will admit that top was a size or two too small, but that’s because I wanted that lift. Jeremy didn’t appreciate it. He’s always thinking these thirsty dudes are looking at me. I keep telling him that’s none of his concern. He just keeps insisting on telling me to change my clothes. I went inside and found a cute bodycon dress that stopped mid-thigh. It was red with black straps. I paired it with a black leather jacket and my black chunky heels. When I stepped outside, he smirked and gave his ‘nod of approval’. He opened my door and helped me into my seat. “
*CHRIS* The next day, I went into work with dinner still on my mind. I never knew my mom was in such a state. She seemed perfectly fine when she came to visit me at the hospital. She even helped me around the room during my recovery. I hadn’t known she’d been lying. Neither did I know that she lied to my dad too. I wondered what else they weren’t telling me since I left last night. That unsettling flutter in my stomach hadn’t left either. It’s safe to say I didn’t sleep. Between me trying to find Mira and worrying about my mom, I might be on the verge of losing my mind myself. I didn’t talk to my dad about it because it was already late, so I ended up leaving, but I intended to talk to him about it today. The morning rush came early, and we were all busy trying to get everyone in and out. It wasn’t until around one o’clock that I was able to get enough breathing room to go address things. I went down the hall and knocked on his door. “Come in.” I walked in and sa
