MasukI returned to the gym and noticed Walt with Kacie and Kayla. I approached Walt and asked him to step aside so I could explain what had just transpired.
“Eric, is everything alright?” “Yeah, Kace, I just need Walt for a moment.” “Okay, don’t take too long.” We ended up walking just outside the gym doors. “What’s going on? Is everything okay? Where have you been? Why are you wet?” Walt was asking way too many questions at once, and I was already frantic, trying to gather the information he needed. “Never mind that. I just saw the guy.” “What guy, Eric? Relax.” “Jamira’s ‘boyfriend,’ at least that’s who he claimed to be.” “Wait, she has a boyfriend?” “Well, yes. I suppose so.” “And you knew about this?” “Oh my god, Walt, listen!” “I am, I’m just having a hard time keeping up.” “The festival that was here about a month or two ago, she was with a guy. I asked if they were together, and she said yes, so I told her to leave him.” “Okay, so you found out she has a boyfriend. You told her to leave him. Now he showed up here… I’m assuming for her?” “Yeah.” “What does that have to do with you?” “He knows about me and that we’ve been having sex.” “And you’re still having sex with her?” “Oh my god, yes, Walt. It’s incredible.” Walt stood there, rubbing his beard, trying to process what I had just told him. “Well, there goes Angie’s chance.” I rolled my eyes. Is this really what he thought of? Walt always had a way of focusing on the wrong things when there was a task at hand. “Oh please, she never had a chance.” “So what now?” “I need to find out everything about this guy.” “I mean, I can make some calls and see what they can do, but honestly, have you talked to Jamira about this?” “I don’t intend to.” “I think you should, brother.” “I don’t know, not now.” What happened next was completely off-putting. I didn’t expect it to be so obvious. “So, when you were gone all this time, were you having sex with her?” Was it that obvious that Walt, of all people, could point it out? I turned red at the mention of what had happened in her classroom. “What, no?” He didn’t believe it. He looked at me with a wide smile, as if he was processing everything on his face. “If I didn’t know any better, I’d say this is more than just a fling for you. I’d even say you’ve fallen for her.” He wasn’t lying. I just wasn’t ready to admit those feelings until we figured out what we were doing. I thought keeping things light and safe would keep her around and not make her feel uncomfortable or pressured because I have real feelings for her. I couldn’t confirm or deny what he was saying as I was forced to face what I already knew. Before I could react, he said something that stuck with me for a while. “E, I’m not gonna lie, what you’re doing is very dangerous if she’s still involved with this guy. But I get it. She’s hot, and I’d hit that too.” My eyes snapped up at him as he said that. “Woah, brother. I only have eyes for Kacie. I’m just saying I get why you care about her so much.” Just then, I heard the creak of the door. It was Kacie peeking out from behind it. “If you two meatballs are done, I need one of you to come back and sit with Kayla so I can go to the bathroom.” I looked at Walt. “Well, brother, go on.” I put a hand on his shoulder and lightly pushed him towards the door. “And where do you think you’re going?” “I’m going to the auditorium. They’re playing Marvel movies there.” “Ooh, Kayla loves Captain America!” “Just stay with Walt.” “Nope, I’ll get her. After I finish in the bathroom, we’ll see you there.” I put my hands over my face. I was frustrated the moment she said that. I wanted to keep Kayla from seeing me with her teacher so she wouldn’t ask endless questions. Kacie also doesn’t know I’ve been seeing her, nor has she known that she’s already met our parents and Walt. I try to keep things from Kacie because she’s so nosy and she’ll try to talk to her and get close to her to give her unsolicited advice. I swallowed all of those feelings down and went to find Jamira. It didn’t take long for me to spot her. She was in the corner in the back of the room immediately to the left as soon as I walked in the room. She was curled up under her blanket. She looked so innocent and calm. I walked over and picked her up and slid under her and covered us both with her blanket. She sighed softly against my chest. I rubbed my fingers through her hair and kissed her head. We sat there for a while comfortable and silent. That was until I looked over and noticed Walt and the gang looking around to see if they seen me. I slowly sank in my chair trying to make sure they didn’t spot me. Just my luck Kacie did and started pointing in my direction. FUCK! I turned Jamira to face the wall so Kacie wouldn’t realize it was her. I noticed she hadn’t said anything in a while and realized she was already sleeping. Good. That just made this easier. Walt sat next to me with Kacie next to him and Kayla in her lap. Walt leaned in and apologized. Still frustrated I tried not to be rude, but let out an impatient sigh. The warmth of Jamira and her blanket enveloped me and before the movie ended I had given into the sleep that was calling out to me.*JAMIRA* “Promise you’ll make uncle come back to get me,” Kayla said as she hugged me. I knelt down as far as I could go. “I pinky promise.” We interlocked our pinkies and kissed our thumbs before she turned around to leave. I went back to the stove to clean up the mess we’d made while baking cookies. Ayana took a cookie and began eating it. She watched me for about half a second before she came with her own observations. “Okay so…girl what the fuck?” “Ayana, please.” “No, girl that man is on something. Our white knight on a horse is dealing with some real shit.” “I heard,” I said as I walked the dishes over to the sink. “I think you need to go in there and investigate.” I looked up from the sink to see Eric walk into his room and softly shut the door. He looked deep in thought as he always did these days. “Or I could just respect the man’s privacy.” “Mira, look at me.” I shook my head. Not because I didn’t want to look at her. Because I
*ERIC* “Mimi, please don’t make me go,” Kayla pleaded while tugging on Jamira’s wrist. Jamira looked back at me with those dazzling, big, brown eyes of hers. I looked away because I knew I’d give in if I didn’t. “Come on, Eric, what’s one more day?” “She’s not mine to do that with.” “Didn’t you take her without permission?” “That’s not the point. Kacie already said she was coming to get her.” Jamira turned to Kayla and held her cheek. “Sorry, little one, I tried.” They both looked like two sad ass puppies who never found their forever homes. “Come put your shoes on, sour patch.” Kayla pouted as she reluctantly put her shoes on. “It’s okay. I promise I’ll come and get you again.” She gave a half smile and sulked all the way to the couch to wait. I went and gathered her things, making sure she left with everything she came with. I’ve never seen her so sad. And yet, it was nothing I could do. That cut deeper than any knife could. At the last
*CHRIS* “When are you coming back?” “When I get off break.” “You left two hours ago, we’re getting backed up.” “Carlos, chill. I’ll be back in a few.” “Hours or minutes?” “Why?” “Unless you want to get sued or reported, I’d come back. The customer has been asking for their car and I can’t keep misleading them.” “Just tell them I went to get some more parts.” “I—“ I quickly hung up the phone. The longer I stayed on the phone, the more I risked getting caught. I followed a car because I mistakenly thought it belonged to Ayana’s triflin’ ass. I told myself I wouldn’t make that same mistake again. This time, during lunch I rode past her house again. She and Jamira were really making this shit hard for me. I hadn’t seen either of them or their vehicles since that night. I decided that if this was going to work, I needed to not only get creative, I needed to think this through. Which meant even if she hadn’t shown up yet, she’d come back. And when she did, I’d
*CHRIS* Normally when someone is staring down the barrel of a gun, they see their life flash before their eyes. Well when it was me, all I could think of was if she didn’t pull the trigger, I’d be the problem she didn’t want. At that time I didn’t know how. But as the days went by I knew what I had to do. Unfortunately I had to stick a pin in it because I still had to find Jamira and that dusty coochie ass hoe Ayana needed to pay. She thought I didn’t like her ass before. She was eventually going to see how much I despise her. Every day I’d make time to go by her house. I knew she knew my car from the last time I was there. Every time I’d go, it would be in a customer’s vehicle instead. She couldn’t catch me if she wanted to. I was careful not to look directly at the house as I passed it. Often times my eyes would just scan until something was worth stopping for. It wasn’t. I would check online to see if Jamira posted anything. She rarely did. Then I’d go to Ayana’s b
*ERIC* “Kacie… I thought you weren’t going to be back until late tonight,” he said barely above a whisper. She held my gaze as she responded to Walt. “They sent me home early.” “Answer the question Kacie.” She fumbled to put the keys in her pocket. “What Eric? What?” “Why the fuck do you have a key to Walt’s house, Kacie?” “Why do you think Eric?” Suddenly everything started to fall into place. The shoes, the purse, the blanket. My mind wasn’t playing tricks on me. I knew those items. “You said you found an apartment. Why did you lie?” “Eric, I—“ “We wanted to tell you.” At that point every bone in me wanted to grab him by the throat and sling him across the room. My fists balled at my sides. “SHUT THE FUCK UP WALT! We’ve been friends for years and I don’t even have a key. She sells you a sob story and you give her one? You don’t even know her!” “He knows enough.” “Oh yeah? Does he know why you’re really here and what you’re going to do as soon as Jos
*KAYLA* “No more chicken fingers for you, Mr. Jingles.” “Is that what you named your shark?” “Mmhmm.” “Well how about we sit Mr. Jingles on the couch so he doesn’t get a tummy ache after eating all of that food.” “Mr. Jingles, Ms. Hines says you have to take a nap.” I put my shark on the couch and put the blanket on him. Ms. Hines made me chicken fingers. They were yummy. I like her food. Mommy can’t cook like that. After I ate all my food, Ms. Hines let me paint her belly. She said she didn’t have any paper, so she told me to pretend she was. She gave me pretty colors like pink, green, and sparkly yellow. “Ooh, that tickles, Kayla.” “Sorry. Mommy never lets me have this much fun. She says I’m messy, but I like being with you and uncle. Y’all are nice to me and play with me.” “I’m sure Mommy is nice to you too. Maybe she’s just busy.” “Nope. Mommy and uncle are mad at each other. They were really loud. It scared me. He told me to come with him and you.” “T
