Once I showered and dressed, two new doctors came in with Dr. Richmond. I sit up in the bed as they move closer to me. Dr. Richmond stands forward. “This is Dr. Ward.” Dr. Richmond explains as he points to a tall, older, grey-haired man in a lab coat.
I nod my head in acknowledgment.
“Dr. Ward is your neurologist. He brought along a colleague who has studied your case.”
The doctor behind Dr. Ward steps forward and extends his hand to me. I look at it for a second and then take it into mine to shake it. The seconds our fingers touch I feel a spark. I look up at the doctor to see if he feels it too, but I can’t tell whether he does or not. He is looking at me strangely.
“I am Dr. Clark. By any chance does that ring a bell?”
“No, should it?”
“No. I was just wondering. They say coma patients can hear while they’re in a coma, and I have been here helping with your case.”
“Thank you.”
“No thanks necessary.”
For some reason, I feel naked under Dr. Clark’s piercing blue-green eyes. As I look at him, I feel the need to stare at him from head to toe. I’m guessing because he is the only one of my doctors that seems to be young. Maybe he is about my age, whatever that might be.
Dr. Clark does seem appealing to my eyesight. How can he not be? He has beautiful eyes, but on top of that, he looks as if he works out. I shake the thoughts from my mind as Dr. Ward steps forward again.
“Can you please tell us what it is you last remember?”
“That’s the thing. I don’t remember anything.”
“You don’t remember anything that happened to you?” Dr. Ward inquires.
“No, not a thing.”
“Do you remember anything about yourself or your family?” Dr. Richmond asks.
“No. Do I have a family? Have they come to visit me?”
“No, I’m sorry to say.” Dr. Ward answers.
I watch as the doctors all turn to look at him. I wonder why.
“So, I have no family? No one has come to visit or report me missing?”
“As far as we know, no.”
I become sad. That must mean that no one cares for me. How do I live without anyone in my life?
Dr. Ward places his hand on my shoulder. “Don’t get sad. There could be several reasons why no one has come in. Your loved ones may not know that you are missing.”
“I guess. Why is it that I can’t remember anything about myself, but I can remember how to speak?”
“The brain works in crazy ways. There could be several reasons. We have to run tests and find out.”
“Do you think I will remember who I am eventually?”
“Yes.” Dr. Clark answers.
Somehow, that makes me feel better.
I walk into the precinct and make a beeline for the Captain’s office. I open the door without knocking and stick my head in. “You got a minute, Capt.?”“I might as well, since you don’t know how to act.”I enter the office and take a seat. “I need a favor.”“What’s that, Clark?”“I need a warrant for a C.I. to wear a wire.”“Excuse me.”“I found out why Josh McCall was murdered.”“You want to fill me in.”“He was supplying Dr. Ward with drugs for sale.”“You’re trying to tell me a first-class doctor would risk his career to become a drug dealer? Do you know where the drugs are going?”“No, but I believe I can find out if you allow me to get the warrant.”“And what am I supposed to use as probable cause?”“Two witnesses.”“Who?”“I would rather not say until we have this wrapped, but they are willing to testify.”“And this will wrap up the death case of Josh McCall and take a drug dealer’s supply off the street. Am I right?”“Yes.”“I can’t promise anything, but let me see what I can d
“Sir I think we have a problem.”“What’s the problem, Cece?”“I believe we have a car following us.”Tanya and I turn around in our seats to look out the rear window. Behind us is a dark blue car. “Oh my God, that’s the car that hit B.J. and me.”“Are you sure?”“I am more than sure. It looks like the same guy that’s driving.”“Did you guys hear that?” I ask Cece and Chris.“Roger that sir,” Chris answers back. Then I feel the car take a sharp left and then a sharp right. Tanya and I watch as the car follow us. Then before we knew it, we were behind the car that was following us. “Stay in the car.” Chris and Cece yell as they jump out with their guns drawn on the man driving the dark blue car.Tanya and I watch from the inside of our car as they move in. Chris pulls the guy out of the car and slams him up against it. Chris pulls handcuffs from behind his back while Cece calls the cops. Tanya and I stay in the car until the cops appear.Once they arrive, we step out of the car and walk
My burner phone rings, and I pick it up right away. “Hello.”“What the hell were you thinking?”“What do you mean?”“I mean, what were you thinking when you gave that fool a hotshot?”“I thought you told me to take care of things.”“Did you stop and think before you acted?”“Of course, I did.”“Then that means you are a dumbass because you fucked things up more than fixed them. See, here’s the problem: you brought the cops around even more. Second, who the hell is going to help us get our product? Those are two major problems.”“What did you expect me to do?”“I don’t know. Maybe lean on Josh.”“Threatening him didn’t work anymore.”“So instead of telling me this, you kill him, which brings more heat on us and fucks up my operation.”“The cops won’t find anything.”“And what about those two bitches?”“They are staying quiet.”“If that changes, I'd better be the first call. That Tanya bitch I can handle. As for now, you'd better get someone to replace that dude you killed.” The line go
The night approached quickly, and it was time to say goodnight. We all stepped on the elevator together, but Bryce and I got off on the second floor.Bryce walks toward the master suite, and I follow behind him. He stands at the door and looks at me. “You’re coming in here?” Bryce asks me in a shocked voice.“I am your wife. Is there a problem with me sleeping in here with you?”“No. Not at all. I’m just a little shocked, that’s all.”“Well, stop being shocked and open the door to our bedroom.”Bryce wastes no time doing what I ask him. When we entered the room, that’s when I remembered I didn’t have anything in that room. “I’m sorry, I had all your things moved to the guest room. We’ll have them moved back tomorrow.”“That’s fine. I’ll be back.” I walk out of the room and into what has been my room. I open the drawer and pull out a white silk nightgown. I put it on and walk back into the bedroom with Bryce. When I enter, he is already under the covers, so I walk over to the other si
As Katherine goes to the second floor to be with Tanya, I’m left on the first floor with Tanya’s father, Terrance, her brother Tyrone, and Mikey, who arrived after settling Karen down. As soon as his mother is out of sight, Tyrone jumps up out of his seat and into my face. “What the fuck is your problem not telling us that my sister was awake?”I jump out of my seat as well. “I did what I thought was best.”“And who the fuck are you?”“I’m her fucking husband.”“You think that gives you the right to treat us as if we’re not her family? I should beat your ass, white boy.”I step to Tyrone. “I believe we tried that before, and you ended up on your ass.”“If that’s what you think, then let’s step outside.”“Not a problem, but when this white boy whoops your ass again, don’t come crying like no bitch.”“Cut this shit out,” Terrance yells. “Look, Bryce, we have always had a good relationship. We have always been family. It hurt when you treated us as if we were nobodies.”“I understand, Te
A week passes, and the same thing happens day in and day out. I watch as Tanya lies in our son’s bed holding on to his teddy bear. She doesn’t get out of bed unless she needs to use the restroom. She doesn’t even bother to take a shower.I had to send Bree back home with my parents because Tanya wouldn’t respond to her whenever she tried to talk to her. I have no idea what to do.I’m downstairs having a beer with Mikey, trying to relieve some stress. “What are you going to do?” Mikey asks me before taking a sip of his beer.“There’s only one choice to make, and that’s to call Katherine and Terrance.”“You know they are going to kill you, right?”“I know, but I did what I thought was best.”“That may be, but you have to think about it from their side of things. I mean, think about if it was Bree. Imagine Bree was in a coma for a year and wakes up, and her husband doesn’t call you to let you know that she’s awake.”“I get it,” I say one more time before slamming my beer down in anger. “
