Chapter 2

Author: Rainy Eve
I opened Nancy's profile. Her latest post showed her and Caelum locked in a passionate kiss beneath a sky full of fireworks.

In the photo, the fireworks formed the shape of a rabbit. I recognized the display instantly. Caelum had originally arranged it for me.

Now, it had become part of their romantic reunion instead.

Things like this had happened so often over the past few years that I felt far calmer than I had expected. I was even composed enough to tap Like on the post.

Caelum called me immediately, his voice thick with irritation. "What's that supposed to mean?"

"Nothing. Congratulations on getting back together."

"You're the one who drove me back to her. Don't come crying to me later."

Caelum's voice had returned to its familiar indifference. He must have assumed I was jealous again, just as I used to be.

He hung up without another word.

I swallowed a handful of pills, my expression blank.

…

Within a single week, Caelum had made me the biggest laughingstock in our social circle. He took Nancy to one lavish gala after another and entrusted her with a string of top-tier projects. She had already been a star, but now her name was impossible to ignore.

He even held a ceremony to exchange vows with her and sent the invitation straight to me.

Yet I accepted it without a fuss. I didn't fly into a rage as I would have in the past.

Meanwhile, Caelum's expression grew darker with each passing day.

Nancy: [So what if you managed to remarry him, you crazy woman? His heart still belongs to me.]

I glanced at Nancy's message before tearing the invitation to pieces. Then I walked into my studio and pulled the cloth from a canvas, revealing a woman's face.

It was my mother.

A dull ache spread through my stomach, and a thin trickle of blood escaped the corner of my mouth. My hand trembled as I picked up my brush.

With what little time I had left, I wanted to finish one last painting. Then I would go find my mother.

…

It was the night of Caelum's birthday party.

Nancy clung to his arm as she greeted the guests, acting as though she were the real Mrs. Pemberton.

I could feel the guests' mocking gazes on me.

Nancy approached me with a triumphant smile and raised her hand to show off the diamond ring on her finger.

For a moment, its brilliance was almost painful to look at.

I knew that design better than anyone. I had created it myself for my wedding ring when I first married Caelum. Now, that same design adorned his mistress' finger.

The only difference was that her diamond was worth far more than mine had ever been.

The contrast between us was just as stark. She looked radiant and beautiful, while I had grown pale and gaunt.

She let out a soft laugh, her voice dripping with contempt. "Annie, how did you let yourself become so pathetic?

"When you two divorced, I told Cael not to be so cruel. I even asked him to give you some money. But I never expected...

"Even after remarrying him, you're still living like a pauper. Look at you, all shabby and miserable. Tell me, have you gone back to work at the nightclub?"

Caelum stood by without a word and allowed her to humiliate me. He was waiting for me to beg him.

Instead, I stepped forward, seized a fistful of Nancy's hair, and slapped her so hard that she sprawled across the floor.

Caelum's expression changed instantly. "Annette!"

He roared my name and grabbed me, intent on dragging me into a room off the banquet hall.

I fought him with every ounce of strength I had, but my entire body suddenly went rigid.

The electrical wiring caught fire, and the lights went out.

I lay in the hospital bed with a breathing tube in place, scrolling through the comments online.Part of me wanted to know what everyone thought, too. Did the rest of the world see me as nothing more than a pathetic joke?[God, this is brutal. This woman has been through hell. I actually feel sick reading this.][Anyone else think she's partly to blame for falling for a guy like this? It's not entirely her fault, but come on. The man already betrayed her once, and she still remarried him.][That's not fair, though. She's genuinely been through so much. More than 20 years together, all that shared history. That's not something you can just walk away from. And it sounds like she doesn't even have any family or friends left.][I came here for the tea on the actress who was the mistress, so why am I crying over the wife's story instead...][Both of them deserve to rot.]Someone took the phone from my hands, and I looked up to find Caelum's exhausted face hovering over me.Our eyes

I admitted it. What I felt for Caelum had never been healthy. In my short life, all the love I knew during my first 17 years came from two people: my mother and Caelum. After my mother died, Caelum was all I had left. I had loved him. I had hated him. And now, as my life drew to an end, he was still the only person I could think of.The year I turned 17, my mother died, and that bastard of a father threw me out of the house. Caelum took me in and gave me a place to stay at the Pemberton home. That was when he confessed his feelings for me.From that day forward, I created a Instagram account and began documenting our relationship And now, Caelum was reading it, one post at a time.…Today was the anniversary of my mother's death. Caelum skipped class to take me to visit her grave.A light rain began to fall. We took shelter beneath the eaves, but the wind kept blowing the rain toward us.He stepped in front of me to shield me from it.I asked him what he was doing. He said he w

I saw the unfinished painting again.Caelum brought it to me himself. Every trace of filth had been removed, and it looked exactly as it had before."Annie, I didn't realize how much this painting meant to you. I thought it was just an ordinary painting. I'm sorry… But look, I've already had someone restore it. It's exactly the way it was before...""How did you manage that?" I asked.Caelum seemed unaware of the dark red stain that had begun to seep through the back of his black suit jacket. He gave me a deliberately casual smile. "I just hired a specialist. It was nothing. Don't worry about it."I knew exactly which specialist he meant. She was a renowned restoration expert who had never failed to restore a painting. But she had one peculiar rule. If a painting had suffered accidental damage, she would restore it free of charge. However, if someone had deliberately damaged it, whoever sought her help had to endure 10 lashes from her first, each one severe enough to split the s

Caelum, a workaholic who had never missed a day at the office, stopped going to work altogether and stayed by my side at the hospital around the clock. He remembered how much I used to love the vegetable soup he made. He carefully took it out of the insulated container and held it out to me. "Annie, please try some..."I didn't move, and I made no effort to hide the disgust on my face. "Can you just get out?"He swallowed hard and forced a smile, his voice even more pleading than before. "The doctor said you need to eat something. How about some soup? You used to love it, remember? Just a little, please..."I took the bowl and dumped the scalding soup straight over his head. The thick liquid streamed through his hair and soaked into his expensive coat. Wherever it touched his skin, angry red patches appeared almost instantly. His brow furrowed, and the veins on the back of his hand bulged, but he didn't pull away. When he spoke, his voice was as rough as gravel. "Annie, you can

The smell of disinfectant hung heavy in the air.I opened my eyes to a blinding white ceiling. When I turned my head, I found Caelum staring at me with bloodshot eyes."Annie, you're awake..." He gripped my hand tightly, as though he feared I might slip away at any moment. My body felt strangely light. The constant stomach pain and ringing in my ears had vanished.I realized this might be the brief calm before the end, and the words escaped before I could stop them. "I'm dying, aren't I..."Caelum was already in tears. He shook his head, his voice choked with emotion. "No. No, you're not… Annie, you're not going to die. We'll go abroad. Medicine has advanced so much. I'll get you the treatment you need. I'll find a way to cure you, I swear..."I pulled my hand free and looked him straight in the eye. When I spoke, I chose every word with the deliberate intention of hurting him. "Caelum, do you know why I got stomach cancer?"His lips trembled, and his fingers curled into his pa

Caelum refused to believe Nancy had hurt me and dismissed the whole incident."The production team invited me to appear on a variety show as Nancy's boyfriend. What do you think?" Caelum asked as he sat beside me, his tone deliberately casual.Another sharp pain tore through my stomach. I had no desire to speak to him. "Sounds great. No complaints from me."His hand froze halfway through turning a page.My continued indifference finally pushed his long-simmering frustration to the breaking point. He pinned me against the sofa, his eyes bloodshot with rage, and shouted as if he were on the verge of losing control, "Annette! Do you really not care at all? What the hell do you want from me? How long are you going to keep this up? Do you want me to beg for your forgiveness? Do you want me on my knees?"I lowered my eyes and swallowed back the blood that rose in my throat. "Isn't this exactly what you wanted from me?"Caelum ignored my attempts to struggle free. He tore open my cloth
