Chapter 1

Author: Rainy Eve
I sat on the edge of the bed, my clothes hastily thrown on. "Your body and mind can be separate. Why can't mine?"

The room was a wreck, and the charged intimacy of what had just happened still lingered in the air.

Caelum stood in the darkness, blood dripping from his fingers.

Milo Chavez knelt at his feet, trembling.

"Get out," Caelum ordered through gritted teeth.

Milo scrambled away on his hands and knees, leaving us alone.

Caelum's expression went blank. He strode toward me, seized my arm, and dragged me into the bathroom.

"Don't touch me! Mmph!"

He threw me into the bathtub. My clothes were already half undone, and he tore off the rest.

He snatched up the showerhead and blasted me with ice-cold water. He pinned me down despite my struggles.

"Annie. Just this once." His voice was gentle, but his hands were anything but.

His hand trembled as he viciously scrubbed at the kiss marks on my neck.

Humiliation washed over me.

I shoved him with all my strength, grabbed the metal showerhead beside me, and hurled it at him. "Get out!"

Caelum made no attempt to dodge. Blood trickled down his temple as he stared at me, his eyes dark and heavy.

Fear gripped me. I trembled and shrank back, but he seized me by the throat. Then he crushed his lips against mine in a furious kiss.

"I should get out? Then who do you want? That boy toy of yours?" he asked darkly. "Annette Morgan! I swear, I want you dead!"

A sharp pain tore through my lips. The metallic taste of blood filled my mouth, followed by a sudden wave of stomach pain and nausea.

I gagged and shoved him away. I ignored his bloodshot eyes and doubled over the edge of the tub, retching.

"You find me disgusting?" His voice was hoarse and unsteady, thick with disbelief.

But I had no strength left to answer. It felt as though someone were twisting a knife in my stomach, and the pain sent tremors through my entire body.

"Annette, you've ruined everything! I already cut things off with her! What more do you want?" he roared. "Fine! From now on, we'll go our separate ways. Don't say I didn't warn you!"

The door slammed shut with a deafening crash.

Dead silence settled over the room.

After a long while, I summoned what little strength I had left and climbed out of the bathtub. That was when I noticed a gift box on the sofa.

I opened it and found a watch inside. It was the very one I'd casually circled just two days ago, one of only three in the world.

In a daze, I recalled that Caelum had been carrying this very bag when he arrived earlier.

After we remarried, Caelum seemed to revert to his old self. He turned down every social obligation and devoted all his time to me. He paid attention to even the smallest things I liked. If I so much as glanced at a bag twice, it would arrive at our house that very night.

Time, money, love. He gave me everything.

But I was no longer the same.

Whenever he scrolled through his phone, I suspected he was messaging Nancy Valentin again. Whenever he opened Instagram, I was convinced he was looking at her photos.

Nancy never once appeared before me, yet her presence haunted me constantly.

Between my illness and everything that had happened with the two of them, I was on the verge of losing my mind. I couldn't take it anymore. Hence, I had an affair.

I desperately wanted to know if someone that wonderful truly existed. Someone so irresistible that Caelum would willingly throw away 21 years of our relationship just to be with them.

I picked up the card tucked inside the gift box.

[Annie, happy seventh anniversary.]

The words cut through my chest like a blade, and a bitter wind seemed to howl through the open wound.

Just then, a friend request appeared on my phone. I recognized Nancy's profile picture instantly.

Nancy: [Thank you for sending him back to me.]

I lay in the hospital bed with a breathing tube in place, scrolling through the comments online.Part of me wanted to know what everyone thought, too. Did the rest of the world see me as nothing more than a pathetic joke?[God, this is brutal. This woman has been through hell. I actually feel sick reading this.][Anyone else think she's partly to blame for falling for a guy like this? It's not entirely her fault, but come on. The man already betrayed her once, and she still remarried him.][That's not fair, though. She's genuinely been through so much. More than 20 years together, all that shared history. That's not something you can just walk away from. And it sounds like she doesn't even have any family or friends left.][I came here for the tea on the actress who was the mistress, so why am I crying over the wife's story instead...][Both of them deserve to rot.]Someone took the phone from my hands, and I looked up to find Caelum's exhausted face hovering over me.Our eyes

I admitted it. What I felt for Caelum had never been healthy. In my short life, all the love I knew during my first 17 years came from two people: my mother and Caelum. After my mother died, Caelum was all I had left. I had loved him. I had hated him. And now, as my life drew to an end, he was still the only person I could think of.The year I turned 17, my mother died, and that bastard of a father threw me out of the house. Caelum took me in and gave me a place to stay at the Pemberton home. That was when he confessed his feelings for me.From that day forward, I created a Instagram account and began documenting our relationship And now, Caelum was reading it, one post at a time.…Today was the anniversary of my mother's death. Caelum skipped class to take me to visit her grave.A light rain began to fall. We took shelter beneath the eaves, but the wind kept blowing the rain toward us.He stepped in front of me to shield me from it.I asked him what he was doing. He said he w

I saw the unfinished painting again.Caelum brought it to me himself. Every trace of filth had been removed, and it looked exactly as it had before."Annie, I didn't realize how much this painting meant to you. I thought it was just an ordinary painting. I'm sorry… But look, I've already had someone restore it. It's exactly the way it was before...""How did you manage that?" I asked.Caelum seemed unaware of the dark red stain that had begun to seep through the back of his black suit jacket. He gave me a deliberately casual smile. "I just hired a specialist. It was nothing. Don't worry about it."I knew exactly which specialist he meant. She was a renowned restoration expert who had never failed to restore a painting. But she had one peculiar rule. If a painting had suffered accidental damage, she would restore it free of charge. However, if someone had deliberately damaged it, whoever sought her help had to endure 10 lashes from her first, each one severe enough to split the s

Caelum, a workaholic who had never missed a day at the office, stopped going to work altogether and stayed by my side at the hospital around the clock. He remembered how much I used to love the vegetable soup he made. He carefully took it out of the insulated container and held it out to me. "Annie, please try some..."I didn't move, and I made no effort to hide the disgust on my face. "Can you just get out?"He swallowed hard and forced a smile, his voice even more pleading than before. "The doctor said you need to eat something. How about some soup? You used to love it, remember? Just a little, please..."I took the bowl and dumped the scalding soup straight over his head. The thick liquid streamed through his hair and soaked into his expensive coat. Wherever it touched his skin, angry red patches appeared almost instantly. His brow furrowed, and the veins on the back of his hand bulged, but he didn't pull away. When he spoke, his voice was as rough as gravel. "Annie, you can

The smell of disinfectant hung heavy in the air.I opened my eyes to a blinding white ceiling. When I turned my head, I found Caelum staring at me with bloodshot eyes."Annie, you're awake..." He gripped my hand tightly, as though he feared I might slip away at any moment. My body felt strangely light. The constant stomach pain and ringing in my ears had vanished.I realized this might be the brief calm before the end, and the words escaped before I could stop them. "I'm dying, aren't I..."Caelum was already in tears. He shook his head, his voice choked with emotion. "No. No, you're not… Annie, you're not going to die. We'll go abroad. Medicine has advanced so much. I'll get you the treatment you need. I'll find a way to cure you, I swear..."I pulled my hand free and looked him straight in the eye. When I spoke, I chose every word with the deliberate intention of hurting him. "Caelum, do you know why I got stomach cancer?"His lips trembled, and his fingers curled into his pa

Caelum refused to believe Nancy had hurt me and dismissed the whole incident."The production team invited me to appear on a variety show as Nancy's boyfriend. What do you think?" Caelum asked as he sat beside me, his tone deliberately casual.Another sharp pain tore through my stomach. I had no desire to speak to him. "Sounds great. No complaints from me."His hand froze halfway through turning a page.My continued indifference finally pushed his long-simmering frustration to the breaking point. He pinned me against the sofa, his eyes bloodshot with rage, and shouted as if he were on the verge of losing control, "Annette! Do you really not care at all? What the hell do you want from me? How long are you going to keep this up? Do you want me to beg for your forgiveness? Do you want me on my knees?"I lowered my eyes and swallowed back the blood that rose in my throat. "Isn't this exactly what you wanted from me?"Caelum ignored my attempts to struggle free. He tore open my cloth
