Chapter 1

Author: Inky Tea
After confirming the new job offer with the school board, I began drafting the divorce agreement.

That was when Phillip Lawson came home carrying a cake.

“Wendy, come take a look! Guess what tasty treat Daddy has brought for you?”

However, the usually well-behaved Wendy did not happily run over to him like she normally did. She only spared him a glance before quietly returning to her homework.

Phillip was unfazed. He strolled over with a broad smile and gently pinched her cheek.

“I know. Are you upset because you didn’t win first place? It’s alright. You’re still young. There will be plenty more competitions like this in the future, and you’ll get that trophy one day.”

I saw the disappointment on our daughter’s face and the way she bit down hard on her lip. I stepped forward and shoved Phillip away.

“That’s enough. Do you really think Wendy’s too young to understand the vile threat you made?”

Both my daughter and I remembered exactly what he had said back then. “If you dare report it, I’ll make sure Wendy doesn’t even get second place!”

Phillip frowned and looked at me in disagreement.

“Danielle, are you seriously still holding onto that? It was just a squabble between two kids. I stopped you from reporting it to protect the children’s reputation. What good would it have done to blow it out of proportion?”

I stared into his eyes.

“A squabble between two kids?

“Do you know how badly Wendy was shaking when I carried her out of the restroom? That was intentional harm. Do you understand?!”

The children’s competition was still ongoing when my daughter suddenly went missing.

After searching everywhere, I finally found her huddled up in the corner of a restroom and trembling.

I broke down in tears, but her father was backstage. He was all smiles as he cheered on his secretary’s younger sister.

Phillip’s brow furrowed deeply as he looked at me.

“Wendy is the most popular child there; all eyes were on her. Who’d go out of their way to target her? Besides, the other kids don’t even know her. They are just children. Who would intentionally hurt her?

“I know she worked hard for this. Maybe she just couldn’t handle the pressure when it was her turn. She didn’t win, and I never blamed her. She can try harder next time. Why must you insist on finding excuses for her? Theresa’s little sister is only ten. Do you really believe she bullied Wendy?”

I saw that he was not going to listen. I was about to speak again when someone suddenly knocked on the door. I forced myself to calm down and went to open it.

“Oh, you must be Mrs. Lawson. Hello, I am Mr. Lawson’s secretary, Theresa Young.”

Theresa extended her hand with a smile.

I stared at her coldly but made no move to shake her hand.

Phillip pulled me aside with a tense expression. His tone softened noticeably when he laid eyes on Theresa.

“What brought you here?”

Theresa tucked a lock of hair behind her ear and pulled out an exquisite little box.

“This is for you, Mr. Lawson.”

His smile turned gentle. “A gift? What for?”

“You gave my sister such an expensive piano. I thought I should return the gesture.”

The word “piano” made my eyes snap toward the corner of the living room.

I took my daughter out and splurged without restraint at the mall. After everything I had been through in that relationship, I would never again tether myself to another person. I could not refuse such a reasonable request. He was, after all, her biological father.I gave him a look. “Come with me.”He followed behind as piano music drifted from down the hall. We stopped in front of the music room door. The music inside stopped abruptly. Wendy jumped off the bench and ran into my arms.“Mom! My teacher said I improved again today!”I hugged her close and rubbed her head. “Really? Our little star is getting better and better.”She snuggled into my arms, but her smile froze the moment she caught sight of Phillip standing nearby. He approached slowly and crouched down. He said carefully, “Hi, Wendy.”She instinctively shifted further into my embrace. That small but subconscious movement clearly pierced straight through him.He inched a little closer. His voice was filled with guilt. “It was my fault. I should’ve believed you back then. I’m sorry. Can you forgive me?”Wendy clung to the hem of my sweater. Her tiny face was calm and distant. “You don’

The assistant had just straightened up and was reaching to shut the door when Theresa suddenly burst into the office out of nowhere.Phillip’s gaze turned cold as he looked at the woman standing in front of him. “What are you doing here?”Theresa was disheveled and flustered. She tugged at her clothes and began to cry. “Mr. Lawson, I… I wasn’t thinking straight. I was just so jealous of Danielle… for having such a good husband like you.”Her shrill voice grated on his nerves. He picked up the phone and dialed the security office without a word.“Please, Mr. Lawson, I am begging you. Forgive me just once, please. No one in the industry will hire me now. I can’t find a job. I…”“Are you finished?” He cut her off impatiently.Theresa immediately fell silent as Phillip stared at her coldly.Several security guards rushed in through the doorway.“Mr. Lawson, Mr. Lawson… Phillip! You’re so arrogant! You think you are invincible, is that it?”She shouted and sobbed as the guards st

Phillip’s face was grim as his eyes landed on the wrinkled divorce agreement on the table. A deep sense of dread sank in.He stubbed out his cigarette and drove straight to the university where Danielle worked. When he asked around, one of her colleagues looked stunned.“She didn’t tell you? Danielle accepted a position at Allyan University in France.”Phillip’s eyes widened in shock. He stumbled home that day and sat on her bed. He replayed memories of his years together with Danielle. He was eighteen when he first met Danielle. She was young, gentle, and sweet. The moment he saw her, he knew she was the one.But she had changed. Over time, she grew tough, assertive, and unwilling to compromise. So, when he met Theresa, who reminded him of the eighteen-year-old Danielle, he could not help but pay more attention to her.He looked down at the financial agreement. Danielle had included detailed documentation proving her contributions to his company’s projects, and she was demand

Theresa clutched her face and stared at him in disbelief.Phillip’s gaze turned dark. “So, you deliberately lied to me? Just to make me doubt my own wife and daughter?”She pressed a hand to her burning cheek and bit her lip hard. She was furious yet unwilling to back down.Jenny, who had praised her so effusively earlier, was red with rage. Her voice trembled with anger as she glared at Theresa. “You vile woman. You went after my granddaughter! Don’t you think I’ll let that slide!”Jenny then turned to me. “Danielle, tell me, how do you want to deal with this woman?”I shook my head and said quietly, “There’s no need.”The second I spoke, sirens began to wail in the distance. They grew louder as they got closer.I looked out the window and said calmly, “I’ll settle my own scores.”A group of police officers stormed into the private room. The one in front held out his badge to Theresa.“You’ve been reported for inciting a minor to commit a crime. Please come with us.”Panic f

Cecilia made a face at Wendy.“If I had known you’d tattle, I would’ve kicked you a few more times after I pushed you.”My gaze turned cold. “Feeling proud of yourself? Just remember, people who act like you always crash the hardest.”The provocation in Theresa’s eyes burned even hotter.“Let us wait and see. Sooner or later, I’ll drag you off that ‘Mrs. Lawson’ pedestal.”She snorted coldly, grabbed Cecilia’s hand, and strutted out of the room.I said nothing. I simply reached out and turned off my phone camera. Before walking in, I had already pressed the record button. I had gotten everything. The ward door slammed shut. Wendy buried her face in my chest. Her sobs were quiet at first, but they quickly turned into loud wails.“Mom… did I really do something wrong?”I held her close while rubbing her back with my hand.“No, we did nothing wrong. Don’t cry, baby. Tonight, I’m going to make this right for you.”By the time I brought Wendy to the family gathering, Phillip’s p
