Chapter 2

Author: Inky Tea
I had returned home in a rush, so I had not noticed that the corner where the piano should have been was completely empty.

I was shocked. “Where is the piano?”

Phillip glanced at me casually.

“Theresa’s sister liked it, so I gifted it to her.”

The moment he said that, I saw Wendy’s eyes well up with tears.

She was so well-behaved. She did not even cry; she just bit her lip hard.

That piano had been with her for ten years. And Phillip had just given it away because “Theresa’s sister liked it.”

Seeing the indifference on his face, I snapped.

“Phillip, are you out of your mind? How could you just give away our daughter’s things like that?!”

Theresa acted nervous and said, “Oh dear… I didn’t realize you hadn’t agreed to it, Mrs. Lawson. I shouldn’t have let my sister accept it.”

I glared at her. “You’re right, I never agreed to it. Return the piano.”

Phillip frowned.

“Danielle, must you always blow everything out of proportion? It’s just a piano. I will buy Wendy a new one tomorrow. Okay?”

Theresa quickly tried to calm him down. “Please, Mr. Lawson, don’t be angry. If your wife is unhappy with the decision, I’ll bring the piano back tomorrow.”

He clenched his jaw. “No need. It’s just a piano. Do you think I can’t afford to give one away? I’ll go and buy a new one right now.”

With that, he stormed out the door. Theresa shot me a quick glance and hurried after him.

The door slammed shut behind them, and my face was drained of all color. Bitterness and disappointment rose in waves through my chest.

Phillip had brought up Theresa in front of me many times.

He said she was a gentle girl. Every time he saw her, he was reminded of the spirited and radiant girl I used to be at eighteen.

That was why he always gave her a little extra attention.

I had once believed Phillip was someone who knew his boundaries.

What I did not expect was that he would defend her over and over, even argue with me over her.

And this time round, he had let Theresa’s sister hurt our daughter. He even gave away our daughter’s most treasured possession.

I had never been so disappointed. Stroking Wendy’s sad face, I looked down at the divorce agreement on the table.

I thought to myself, ‘Phillip, this time, I am not just divorcing you. I will make you pay back every single thing you owe me and my daughter!’

The next day, after dropping Wendy off at school, I found the piano competition staff and successfully retrieved the CCTV footage of her being locked inside the restroom.

Clutching the USB drive tightly, I let out a cold laugh.

Then, I gathered all the documentation from the proposals I had helped draft for Phillip’s company.

Everyone thought he was a genius in the business world. But they never knew every single proposal he presented had been carefully crafted, word by word, by me.

I wanted to see just how far he would get without me!

By the time I finished all this, it was already afternoon.

I slipped the divorce agreement into a folder and allowed myself a brief moment of rest.

But right then, I received a call from an unknown number.

“Hello, are you Wendy Lawson’s mother? Your daughter has been injured. Please come to the hospital right away!”

“What?”

My eyes widened in shock. I hailed a cab and rushed straight to the hospital.

When I finally burst into the room, I saw Wendy sitting at the edge of the bed with her right hand in a cast. Her little face was tense and drawn.

Standing in front of her were none other than Theresa and her sister, Cecilia Young.

The moment Wendy saw me, the tension on her face melted away.

“Mom.”

She threw herself into my arms. Her voice was trembling, and she was on the verge of sobbing.

I gently stroked her hair as my heart ached for her. Then, I looked up at Theresa with a frown.

“Explain yourself.”

I had already learned the full extent of Wendy’s injuries on my way here.

I could not refuse such a reasonable request. He was, after all, her biological father.I gave him a look. “Come with me.”He followed behind as piano music drifted from down the hall. We stopped in front of the music room door. The music inside stopped abruptly. Wendy jumped off the bench and ran into my arms.“Mom! My teacher said I improved again today!”I hugged her close and rubbed her head. “Really? Our little star is getting better and better.”She snuggled into my arms, but her smile froze the moment she caught sight of Phillip standing nearby. He approached slowly and crouched down. He said carefully, “Hi, Wendy.”She instinctively shifted further into my embrace. That small but subconscious movement clearly pierced straight through him.He inched a little closer. His voice was filled with guilt. “It was my fault. I should’ve believed you back then. I’m sorry. Can you forgive me?”Wendy clung to the hem of my sweater. Her tiny face was calm and distant. “You don’

The assistant had just straightened up and was reaching to shut the door when Theresa suddenly burst into the office out of nowhere.Phillip’s gaze turned cold as he looked at the woman standing in front of him. “What are you doing here?”Theresa was disheveled and flustered. She tugged at her clothes and began to cry. “Mr. Lawson, I… I wasn’t thinking straight. I was just so jealous of Danielle… for having such a good husband like you.”Her shrill voice grated on his nerves. He picked up the phone and dialed the security office without a word.“Please, Mr. Lawson, I am begging you. Forgive me just once, please. No one in the industry will hire me now. I can’t find a job. I…”“Are you finished?” He cut her off impatiently.Theresa immediately fell silent as Phillip stared at her coldly.Several security guards rushed in through the doorway.“Mr. Lawson, Mr. Lawson… Phillip! You’re so arrogant! You think you are invincible, is that it?”She shouted and sobbed as the guards st

Danielle accepted a position at Allyan University in France.”Phillip’s eyes widened in shock. He stumbled home that day and sat on her bed. Theresa clutched her face and stared at him in disbelief.Phillip’s gaze turned dark. “So, you deliberately lied to me? Just to make me doubt my own wife and daughter?”She pressed a hand to her burning cheek and bit her lip hard. She was furious yet unwilling to back down.Jenny, who had praised her so effusively earlier, was red with rage. Her voice trembled with anger as she glared at Theresa. “You vile woman. You went after my granddaughter! Don’t you think I’ll let that slide!”Jenny then turned to me. “Danielle, tell me, how do you want to deal with this woman?”I shook my head and said quietly, “There’s no need.”The second I spoke, sirens began to wail in the distance. They grew louder as they got closer.I looked out the window and said calmly, “I’ll settle my own scores.”A group of police officers stormed into the private room. The one in front held out his badge to Theresa.“You’ve been reported for inciting a minor to commit a crime. Please come with us.”Panic f

Cecilia made a face at Wendy.“If I had known you’d tattle, I would’ve kicked you a few more times after I pushed you.”My gaze turned cold. “Feeling proud of yourself? Just remember, people who act like you always crash the hardest.”The provocation in Theresa’s eyes burned even hotter.“Let us wait and see. Sooner or later, I’ll drag you off that ‘Mrs. Lawson’ pedestal.”She snorted coldly, grabbed Cecilia’s hand, and strutted out of the room.I said nothing. I simply reached out and turned off my phone camera. Before walking in, I had already pressed the record button. I had gotten everything. The ward door slammed shut. Wendy buried her face in my chest. Her sobs were quiet at first, but they quickly turned into loud wails.“Mom… did I really do something wrong?”I held her close while rubbing her back with my hand.“No, we did nothing wrong.
