Chapter 3

Author: Greencloud
The next day, I brought my mom to the bank.

She had retrieved a passbook and stuffed it in my hand.

"I have 280,000 dollars in here, left behind by your dad. I had wanted to give it to you after you became a mother."

I didn't take it. "Mom, I can settle this by myself."

"You even have to walk on eggshells to get money to pay for public transport. How are you going to settle this by yourself?"

My mom's eyes turned red. "Niki, I've always advised you to bear with whatever comes because I thought Lawrence was a good husband, since he doesn't fool around with other women, have violent tendencies, or have a drinking habit.

"I was wrong."

I pushed the passbook back into her hand. "My lawyer has applied for property preservation. I'm not leaving the marriage with nothing."

The moment I said so, I received a call from Lawrence's lawyer.

He said civilly, "Ms. Scott, the property purchase contract for the marital home under Mr. Yancey's name was dated before your wedding and is therefore considered pre-marital property. The deposit of 900,000 dollars was considered by Mr. Yancey as a gift."

"It was stated in the notes of transfer that it was a joint purchase of property."

"But only Mr. Yancey's name is on the property ownership certificate."

"That's because he said I didn't have the right to own a local property."

The lawyer paused for a moment before saying, "Perhaps you should settle this privately with Mr. Yancey on this. Going ahead with the lawsuit is not going to benefit either of you."

After hanging up, I checked my past accounts.

The record of the transfer of the 900,000 dollars was still there.

However, the property purchase agreement and proof of payment that I kept at home were all gone.

I dialed Lawrence's number.

"Did you take away all the documents regarding our property purchase?"

"You can't accuse me of taking away something found in a house we both live in as husband and wife."

He seemed to be driving as he went on flatly, "Come home and we'll talk."

"Give me those documents back."

"Drop the lawsuit first."

"That 900,000 dollars was from the house I sold before I got married."

"And so?"

He asked me back, "You told me that you were willing to own a home with me when you married me. Now that we have our own home, are you trying to go back on your word and consider the deposit you paid a debt instead?"

I tightened my grip over the phone. "The value of the house has risen to 12 million dollars, yet you refuse to acknowledge that I contributed 900,000 dollars?"

"It's not that I refuse to, but you don't have proof."

Wendy's voice sounded from the other end of the call. "Lawrence, should I go for beige or light gray curtains?"

Lawrence paused for a moment before answering her. "Beige. You prefer lighter colors."

"Are you at her house?"

"She just moved in. I'm helping her check things out."

"Which card did you use to pay for her rental?"

"Niki, don't keep tabs on me."

"Did you pay for it with our family account?"

He fell silent for two seconds. "I earned all the money in that account."

I looked at the passbook my mom gave me, my voice turning cold.

"So, the 300 dollars you give me is considered joint family expenses, while the 120,000 dollars you give her is considered your own money?"

Lawrence was finally all out of patience.

"She's different from you.

"She knows how to be grateful and wouldn't take other people's sacrifices for granted."

I hung up and rushed back to our marital home, only to find the door password had been changed.

Lawrence came back half an hour later with a decoration piece that Wendy didn't want in her house.

"What are you doing here?"

"To take back my documents."

He unlocked the door but blocked me from entering. "You can take them after you drop the lawsuit."

"My identification document and household register are all inside."

"I'm your husband. What's wrong with me taking care of these things for you?"

I pulled out my phone to call the police, but he pressed down on the screen with his palm.

He wasn't forceful, but it was enough to restrain me by the wrist.

"Must it really come to this?"

I stared at his hand. "Let me go."

He released me and pulled out a wad of cash worth 300 dollars from his wallet.

"Your allowance for these few days."

The notes landed on the carpet by my feet.

"Don't sulk anymore. You don't have a stable income, and you need to take care of your mom. You'll have a tough time if you divorce me. A court summons isn't a talisman. The judge looks at evidence, too."

I refused to touch the 300 dollars.

He was about to shut the door when I heard Mrs. Yancey's voice from inside.

"Lawrence, have you changed the password to the safe? Do not let her take the property purchase agreement and proof of payment."

Lawrence froze.

I quickly started a voice recording with my phone.

Mrs. Yancey was still speaking through the door. "She'll come begging you when she realizes she can't get her hands on any proof."

Lawrence quickly shut the door, but I lunged forward and jammed my foot in the door.

Six months later, I went for a follow-up check at the hospital. The doctor looked through my report and said, "There are no obvious changes to the nodule. Just continue with regular monitoring, and you'll be fine."I took the report from him and thanked him.At the cashier counter, I paid for the medical fees with my own bank card.It cost me 186 dollars.I didn't seek anyone's approval or submit any receipts. No one asked me if the appointment was worth the money or not.My mom sat in the corridor, waiting for me with two cups of soy milk in her hands."How did it go?""Not bad."She heaved a sigh of relief and pushed a cup of warm soy milk into my hands. "I wanted to go in with you, yet you insisted on going in by yourself.""I have to come back many times. I can't keep asking you to come along every time.""Why not?"I wrapped my arms around hers and smiled. When I walked out of the hospital, I saw Lawrence standing at the entrance. He had lost a lot of weight since ou

After my divorce, I moved back in with my mom.Recovery of her foot was slow, and I accompanied her for her rehabilitation therapy every day.Without the 300-dollar spending limit, I didn't need to take photos of receipts all the time. The first time I went to the supermarket after everything was over, I bought a box of peaches worth 40 dollars. When I paid for it, I automatically opened my phone camera. My mom pressed my phone down. "Just buy it. Why are you taking a photo of it?"I stood stunned for a few seconds before putting my phone back into my bag. That box of peaches was sweet. When I ate the third one, I finally realized that I was still waiting for an approval message that never existed.Lawrence would come every week.He never entered the house, merely leaving some medicine and fruits at the door.My mom never took them.Once, it was pouring, and he stood there for two hours. When I opened the door, I saw that his hair was completely drenched."I've arranged f

My father had left me with 680,000 dollars after he passed on.Lawrence had kept the bank card with him.He had accused me of being moody and was worried that I might spend it recklessly. Instead, he would carefully plan what to do with the money if I ever needed it.I hadn't checked the balance over the past three years. Now, the account only had 4,700 dollars left.420,000 dollars had been transferred to Wendy.Lawrence had spent the rest of the money on the balance payment for the house renovations and Mrs. Yancey's travel expenses.I flashed him the bank statements."Explain yourself."Lawrence's voice was hoarse. "Cash flow was tight during that period. I used it just to tide us over.""Why did you transfer so much money to Wendy?""Her mom was ill, and she had just graduated from school without any savings."I chuckled. "Her mom fell ill, and you were willing to help no matter how much money it took. I had a nodule, yet I needed your approval for 7,200 dollars.""I d

At the first court mediation session, Lawrence rejected getting a divorce. The mediator asked, "Is there a chance of reconciliation?""Yes."Lawrence answered very quickly. "We don't have any irreconcilable differences, just differences in our approaches to financial management."I looked at the mediator and said, "No."Lawrence turned to face me. "Niki, I've paid off all of your mom's medical fees and lifted the limit on your card.""I've returned it all.""I even sent the property documents to your lawyer.""You only did so after the court froze the properties."The mediator flipped through our documents. "Mr. Yancey, Ms. Scott claims that you've put her under long-term financial control and even forged her signature to transfer assets. What is your response to her accusations?"Lawrence said darkly, "I am in charge of all of our family's expenses. I set a limit to her spending to prevent impulse buying. I admit signing the document on her behalf wasn't appropriate, but it

After Lawrence left the police station, he made a beeline for the hospital.Instead of entering the ward, he stood outside the door and texted me.[Come out. Let's have a chat.]I replied to him: [Contact my lawyer instead.]A few minutes later, he pushed the door open and walked through it.My mom saw him and immediately turned her face away.Lawrence put a fruit basket down on the table. "Mom, does your foot still hurt?""Don't call me 'Mom'."Her voice wasn't loud, but there was no hesitation in it. "My daughter had to do some medical tests, and you thought 7,200 dollars was too expensive. Wendy celebrated her birthday, yet you bought her a necklace worth 8,600 dollars. I'm afraid I don't deserve you addressing me as your mom."Lawrence's face turned pale. "It was a misjudgment on my part regarding the medical tests.""It wasn't a misjudgment."I tucked the corners of my mom's sheets in. "You just didn't think it was worth it to spend a single cent on me."He looked at m

When the police walked through the door, Mrs. Yancey was on her knees, picking up the pieces of the agreement I had torn.Lawrence stood in front of me, blocking their view. "This is our family's internal affair. We can resolve it privately."I handed the mortgage document and recording to the police."Please look into this and determine for yourself whether this is merely a family dispute."The police verified the information I handed them and looked at Lawrence. "You had someone sign on the field for your spouse's signature?""It wasn't convenient for her to come back. I sought her verbal permission to do this."I asked, "When did I agree to do this?"Lawrence didn't answer my question.During that time, I had been with Mr. Lawrence every day, accompanying him for his rehabilitation therapy. My call records would reflect this clearly. He had never mentioned the mortgage, not to mention Wendy's house.Mrs. Yancey cut in. "My son earned the money. Why can't he buy a house wit
