Chapter 4

Author: Greencloud
"Step aside." Lawrence said in a hushed whisper, "Don't force me to call security."

I held on tightly to the door frame. "Return my documents and my dad's bracelet, and I'll leave right away."

Mrs. Yancey came out from the living room, looking calm and unperturbed.

"It's useless even if you record what I just said. I was talking about family documents and not your personal belongings."

She opened the safe and pulled out a folder. "You can have it if you sign this agreement."

There were a total of four pages.

My fingertips turned cold as I read the first page.

[Niki Scott confirms that her deposit payment for the marital home was a personal gift to Lawrence Yancey.]

The second article demanded I give up on the division of marital property.

The third was about me taking responsibility for all accidents that happened while taking care of Lawrence's father.

The final article required me to withdraw the divorce case.

"Sign it, and I'll return both the bracelet and the documents to you."

Lawrence put a pen on the table. "I won't leave you with no place to go. I'll give you 5,000 dollars every month and pay for your mother's insurance premiums as well."

"What is this?"

"Divorce compensation."

"Using my money and my house to compensate me?"

Mrs. Yancey sneered. "You really think of yourself as some kind of savior just because you took care of my husband for a few years? A nurse earns only 3,000 dollars a month. You should be thankful we didn't charge you for the meals and roof over your head we provided you."

I looked at Lawrence.

"Is that what you think, too?"

He avoided my gaze. "It always sounds nasty when you talk about a marriage in terms of money. You were the one who brought us down this path."

My phone rang.

It was my mom's neighbor.

"Niki, your mom fell down the stairs, and she can't move her foot. The ambulance is already here."

I turned to leave, but Lawrence grabbed my arm.

"You haven't signed the agreement."

"My mom is injured."

"You can't treat her even if you rush there right now."

He stuffed the agreement into my hand and said calmly, almost gently, "Sign it, and I'll lift the suspension on your card. I'll settle the hospital admission deposit and surgery fees as well."

I struggled free of his hold. "I don't need your help for her treatment."

"How are you going to pay for it?"

Lawrence picked up my identification document and waved it before me. "Without this, you can't even draw money from the bank."

I glared at him.

He was the man I had shared a bed with for seven years.

He knew all my weaknesses, and every move he made drew blood.

My neighbor was still rushing me over the phone. "The doctor said that it might be a fracture of the femur. Come quickly."

I reached out to take the pen.

Lawrence looked relieved. "That's the way. There's no need to let an outsider judge our family affairs."

As I rested the pen nib on the paper, I asked, "Where is the bracelet?"

Mrs. Yancey pulled it out from her bag and placed it at the corner of the table.

The bracelet was out of shape, and there was even a deep scratch on the inside.

"How did it become like this?"

"I scratched it when I sent it for verification. It can still be worn."

I touched the scratch mark and remained silent.

Lawrence urged me, "Sign it."

I held the agreement in my hand and tore it right down the middle.

I tore it into quarters and let the pieces fall to the ground.

Mrs. Yancey shrieked. "Niki Scott! Have you gone mad?"

I put the dented bracelet back on my wrist. "I'll call the police if you don't give me my identification documents."

The look in Lawrence's eyes grew cold.

"Fine."

He flung it on the floor. "Walk out this door today, and you can forget about begging me for mercy from now on."

I bent over to pick up my identification card.

When I walked to the door, I received a photo on my phone.

It was a court staff member sending supplementary documents, asking if I was the one who had signed it.

It was a letter of consent for a house mortgage.

The house in question was the marital home Lawrence and I had lived in for seven years.

There was a signature in the field "Spouse's Signature".

"Niki Scott."

However, the signing date was when I was overseas with Mr. Lawrence for his rehabilitation therapy.

I showed Lawrence the photo on my phone.

"Who signed this?"

He glanced at it but remained calm.

"I had someone sign it on our behalf."

"You forged my signature?"

"We took a loan for cash flow. It'll be fine as long as we repay it on time."

"Where did the money go?"

Mrs. Yancey cut in. "Lawrence, don't bother explaining anything to her."

I looked at the loan amount.

3.8 million dollars.

The next day after the loan was released, there was a full-payment transaction for an apartment with a riverfront view.

The property purchaser was Wendy Lyons.

I called the police.

Lawrence stepped forward and snatched my phone away.

"Niki, I simply signed a document on behalf of my wife. Must you blow things up and get the police involved?"

The call connected.

I stepped back and gave the policeman the address.

"I want to report a case. Someone forged my signature and mortgaged a jointly owned marital home, effectively transferring marital property."

Six months later, I went for a follow-up check at the hospital. The doctor looked through my report and said, "There are no obvious changes to the nodule. Just continue with regular monitoring, and you'll be fine."I took the report from him and thanked him.At the cashier counter, I paid for the medical fees with my own bank card.It cost me 186 dollars.I didn't seek anyone's approval or submit any receipts. No one asked me if the appointment was worth the money or not.My mom sat in the corridor, waiting for me with two cups of soy milk in her hands."How did it go?""Not bad."She heaved a sigh of relief and pushed a cup of warm soy milk into my hands. "I wanted to go in with you, yet you insisted on going in by yourself.""I have to come back many times. I can't keep asking you to come along every time.""Why not?"I wrapped my arms around hers and smiled. When I walked out of the hospital, I saw Lawrence standing at the entrance. He had lost a lot of weight since ou

After my divorce, I moved back in with my mom.Recovery of her foot was slow, and I accompanied her for her rehabilitation therapy every day.Without the 300-dollar spending limit, I didn't need to take photos of receipts all the time. The first time I went to the supermarket after everything was over, I bought a box of peaches worth 40 dollars. When I paid for it, I automatically opened my phone camera. My mom pressed my phone down. "Just buy it. Why are you taking a photo of it?"I stood stunned for a few seconds before putting my phone back into my bag. That box of peaches was sweet. When I ate the third one, I finally realized that I was still waiting for an approval message that never existed.Lawrence would come every week.He never entered the house, merely leaving some medicine and fruits at the door.My mom never took them.Once, it was pouring, and he stood there for two hours. When I opened the door, I saw that his hair was completely drenched."I've arranged f

My father had left me with 680,000 dollars after he passed on.Lawrence had kept the bank card with him.He had accused me of being moody and was worried that I might spend it recklessly. Instead, he would carefully plan what to do with the money if I ever needed it.I hadn't checked the balance over the past three years. Now, the account only had 4,700 dollars left.420,000 dollars had been transferred to Wendy.Lawrence had spent the rest of the money on the balance payment for the house renovations and Mrs. Yancey's travel expenses.I flashed him the bank statements."Explain yourself."Lawrence's voice was hoarse. "Cash flow was tight during that period. I used it just to tide us over.""Why did you transfer so much money to Wendy?""Her mom was ill, and she had just graduated from school without any savings."I chuckled. "Her mom fell ill, and you were willing to help no matter how much money it took. I had a nodule, yet I needed your approval for 7,200 dollars.""I d

At the first court mediation session, Lawrence rejected getting a divorce. The mediator asked, "Is there a chance of reconciliation?""Yes."Lawrence answered very quickly. "We don't have any irreconcilable differences, just differences in our approaches to financial management."I looked at the mediator and said, "No."Lawrence turned to face me. "Niki, I've paid off all of your mom's medical fees and lifted the limit on your card.""I've returned it all.""I even sent the property documents to your lawyer.""You only did so after the court froze the properties."The mediator flipped through our documents. "Mr. Yancey, Ms. Scott claims that you've put her under long-term financial control and even forged her signature to transfer assets. What is your response to her accusations?"Lawrence said darkly, "I am in charge of all of our family's expenses. I set a limit to her spending to prevent impulse buying. I admit signing the document on her behalf wasn't appropriate, but it

After Lawrence left the police station, he made a beeline for the hospital.Instead of entering the ward, he stood outside the door and texted me.[Come out. Let's have a chat.]I replied to him: [Contact my lawyer instead.]A few minutes later, he pushed the door open and walked through it.My mom saw him and immediately turned her face away.Lawrence put a fruit basket down on the table. "Mom, does your foot still hurt?""Don't call me 'Mom'."Her voice wasn't loud, but there was no hesitation in it. "My daughter had to do some medical tests, and you thought 7,200 dollars was too expensive. Wendy celebrated her birthday, yet you bought her a necklace worth 8,600 dollars. I'm afraid I don't deserve you addressing me as your mom."Lawrence's face turned pale. "It was a misjudgment on my part regarding the medical tests.""It wasn't a misjudgment."I tucked the corners of my mom's sheets in. "You just didn't think it was worth it to spend a single cent on me."He looked at m

When the police walked through the door, Mrs. Yancey was on her knees, picking up the pieces of the agreement I had torn.Lawrence stood in front of me, blocking their view. "This is our family's internal affair. We can resolve it privately."I handed the mortgage document and recording to the police."Please look into this and determine for yourself whether this is merely a family dispute."The police verified the information I handed them and looked at Lawrence. "You had someone sign on the field for your spouse's signature?""It wasn't convenient for her to come back. I sought her verbal permission to do this."I asked, "When did I agree to do this?"Lawrence didn't answer my question.During that time, I had been with Mr. Lawrence every day, accompanying him for his rehabilitation therapy. My call records would reflect this clearly. He had never mentioned the mortgage, not to mention Wendy's house.Mrs. Yancey cut in. "My son earned the money. Why can't he buy a house wit
