Chapter 5

Author: Flowers and Beyond
Because of my injuries, I woke up very easily.

What entered my sight was a face so familiar and exquisite that I would never forget it in my lifetime.

‘Zoey?’

I sobered instantly, my heart in chaos.

Why did she suddenly come back, and why was she lying on top of me, kissing me?

But the next second, Zoey rasped drunkenly and murmured out the answer.

“Cameron...”

Hearing Cameron’s name, my whole body stiffened, and I understood everything in an instant.

Her warm breath, mixed with alcohol, brushed against my lips, and yet all I felt was a bitterness that made me want to cry.

So she was drunk and had mistaken me for her boyfriend.

While I was still frozen, her kissing grew more intense, and her hands began sliding down toward my waist.

“Wake up, Zoey. I’m Sam, not Cameron!”

I understood what she wanted, but I also understood she had taken me for another man.

At that moment, the bitterness and confusion swelled so sharply that my body recoiled on instinct, and I pushed her away without thinking.

But maybe she was truly drunk, because my resistance only made her cling to me harder, kissing me until I could barely breathe.

The movement stirred sharp pain in my chest. I gasped in pain. “Zoey, you’re hurting me...”

After I said that, I didn’t know whether she ran out of strength or simply sank deeper into drunkenness, but her hands finally loosened, and she rested motionlessly in my arms.

I didn’t dare move and could only let her be.

When I opened my eyes again, Zoey was standing before the sofa, looking down at me with cold indifference.

“Zoey...”

Remembering last night’s absurdity, I scrambled up in fear, avoiding her gaze.

She seemed disgusted by my reaction and frowned coldly. “There’s a room for you. Why were you sleeping on the sofa? Were you waiting for me on purpose?”

I froze, lifting my head to meet her icy eyes.

I wanted to explain, but she cut me off sharply. “This is the first and last time. If you ever step over the line again, don’t bother staying in this house.”

My throat felt blocked, and I couldn’t force out the explanation, so I just kept quiet.

Fine. To her, I had a history of causing trouble anyway.

The truth of last night didn’t matter much.

I lowered my head silently.

But suddenly, she leaned toward me, and her hand reached behind my back as if she were about to hug me.

We were so close I could even smell the perfume on her collar.

I froze, lifting my head in shock and faint hope.

Was she really willing to hug me?

It was an unspoken promise between us.

When I was little—whenever loneliness overwhelmed me because I missed my family, or when I hid under the blankets crying after being bullied—Zoey always hugged me without hesitation and comforted me gently.

It was almost the only warmth of my childhood.

But ever since I confessed to her at 18, she had never touched me again.

I couldn’t describe how I felt now—excited, overwhelmed, impatient.

But the next second, her hand reached past me and picked up her phone from the sofa, and then she stood up to leave.

I watched her back, sinking into disappointment.

So everything had only been my wishful thinking.

In the next few days, the money from the sold gifts and properties arrived one after another.

It totaled more than 15 million, still more than a couple hundred grand short of the 16 million I expected.

But I had nothing left to sell, so my thoughts finally fell on my jewelry design pieces.

Although I was still a student, I had participated in several competitions over the years and won awards. I had gained some small recognition in the industry.

If I sold the designs I had poured my heart into these past few years, I could get the remaining amount.

But since I was about to go abroad, it was almost impossible for me to organize a proper jewelry exhibition on my own in such a short time.

In the end, I had no choice but to go to Zoey.

Coincidentally, Cameron was with her when I approached. When he heard I wanted to hold a jewelry exhibition, he became interested.

“So Sam also studies jewelry design? Perfect, I have some pieces I want to exhibit too. Why don’t we do it together?”

He didn’t ask for my opinion at all, he simply looked straight at Zoey.

She nodded, and I had no choice but to agree.

Three days later, our two jewelry exhibitions were held simultaneously at the convention center.

But it was obvious Zoey cared far more about Cameron’s event.

Because it was his first exhibition in 10 years of studying jewelry design, she put her whole heart into it—giving him the largest main hall, using her connections for publicity, and inviting people from all circles.

On opening day, countless socialites crowded Cameron’s exhibition, creating a lively scene.

In contrast, my little side hall had only a few friends who volunteered to help me—and the pitifully small number of jewelry pieces squeezed into the narrow space.

I stood at the entrance, looking at the lively main hall across from me, and gave a bitter smile.

But at that moment, a shout exploded behind me from one of my friends. “Sam, someone’s framing you for stealing their designs!”

Cameron nodded. Before leaving, the two of them even shared a passionate kiss right in front of me, and only then did he walk out."They were just drafts. Try to see if you can recover them. If not, then let it go. They aren’t anything important. Stay at home. Cancel the lease on that place. You're not going back.""I'm going out to eat with Cameron. I’ll bring whatever you want back for you."Zoey instructed me calmly and then stepped forward, ready to leave.I couldn't believe this was the way she chose to handle the situation.Just like that?"Zoey, wait."I stopped her, my chest feeling as though a huge stone were wedged inside, making it hard to breathe."Cameron obviously stole my drafts—why won’t you believe me? You clearly know this was his fault—this time, the last time, and the time before! Those are my work. What right do you have to decide if it's important or not?"Faced with my suffocated, aggrieved questioning, Zoey still remained calm."Cameron is my fiance.

"What were you standing at the door for? Sam, did you quarrel with your sister-in-law?"When Cameron walked in and saw that both Zoey and I looked upset, he naturally guessed what had happened."You’ve stepped over the line, Sam. Your sister-in-law had raised you with such hardship and care. No matter what happened, you shouldn't have quarreled with her. Zoey, babe, don't be angry. I’ll coax you later."I couldn't be bothered with Cameron's tone, which was laced with gloating, and I liked even less hearing him talking as if he was already Zoey’s husband.I reached out and snatched my laptop back."Give it back! You didn't touch anything inside, did you?"I turned on the laptop to check as I stared at Cameron suspiciously."What did you mean by that? I just borrowed your laptop to check its performance. Why would I touch your things?"Cameron frowned as well."See? I told you Cameron wouldn't touch your things. You're just too sensitive."Zoey breathed a sigh of relief.Altho

But no one mentioned how he had bullied me day after day; I only acted because I had reached my limit.Later, I was punished to stand in the hallway for an entire day, and after school the form tutor notified Zoey to come and compensate the other child. It was the first time I did not dare look into Zoey's eyes—I knew I had made a mistake and caused her enormous trouble. But she neither hit nor scolded me; instead, she shielded me firmly behind her and believed in me without hesitation."Sam would never hit someone for no reason. He must have bullied our Sam and done something really bad! We can pay. The Shaw family is not short of money. But please go home and warn your child—if he dares bully Sam again, then we’ll hit him once for every time he bullies Sam in the future. It's fine if he ends up in the hospital each time. I'll still be able to cover all his medical bills!"Her unyielding stance left the other parent speechless, because they knew full well what kind of child they

Zoey stared at me, as if her gaze could see straight through my heart.I trembled inwardly, but I steadied myself quickly."Yes, I only see you as my sister-in-law.""Then why did you keep calling my name after you blacked out last night, and why were you confessing to me?"Had I lost control again in front of her after getting drunk?Faced with her questioning, I was speechless and lowered my head."I don’t remember...""I knew you would give me that excuse. Sam, I’m really disappointed in you!"Her tone suddenly turned icy, enough to make anyone's heart tremble."When will you finally grow up a little? I've told you countless times—there’s no way that we’ll be together. I will always be your sister-in-law.""I know, Zoey. I truly do. I’ve already started letting go and living a new life," I explained sincerely, but all I received was her mocking, disdainful laugh."Sam, do you think I can't tell? This so-called new life of yours—you gave me money, pretended to leave withou

"Zoey, the former Sam had already grown up and no longer wanted to be controlled by you."I met Zoey's gaze. Her expression grew complicated, as if she felt sad, but I no longer cared. I calmly looked away, forced a smile on my face, and clinked glasses with Jane.Inside the private room, the small episode between me and Zoey went unnoticed by everyone.Due to the "male lead" of the story being present, the crowd was coaxing the two of them to recreate the scene from back then. The next moment, Cameron suddenly knelt on one knee, took a delicate jewelry box from his pocket, and held it out toward Zoey."Zoey, it had been so long, yet I didn't expect you still remembered. I know you’re reminding me that I should buy you another ring, so I already bought one in advance. And this one is a proposal ring."Cameron opened the box, revealing the sparkling diamond ring inside. He spoke with deep affection and proposed on the spot, "Zoey, will you marry me?"The room instantly erupted i

  • Love and Emptiness   Chapter 25

"When I saw him, he was completely disheveled, like a drowned rat, but even so, his eyes were still filled with joy when he looked at me. At that moment, my heart ached, and I couldn't help but hold him. We leaned against each other while hiding from the rain. He suddenly told me he had a surprise for me. I was wondering what it was when he suddenly knelt on one knee and took out a ring from his pocket. At the time, he was soaked from head to toe, yet the ring was somehow dry. I was shocked and laughed, calling him an idiot—after all, a ring didn't fear the rain. But he smiled back and told me that while the ring could get wet, his love could not."Everyone listened intently. My lips trembled, and my eyes gradually became wet.But the next second, Zoey's gaze, full of affection, turned to Cameron beside her."That person was Cameron. We confirmed our relationship that very night. That was my most unforgettable moment."As soon as her voice fell, the room filled with admiration.Bu
