Chapter 4

Author: Flowers and Beyond
During the days I spent alone in the hotel, I completely emptied my mind and no longer thought about Zoey.

I thought I had finally let go of that absurd affection.

Until seven days later, when I ran into Zoey again at the hotel’s riding arena—along with Cameron.

“Sam, why are you here too?”

It was Cameron who called out to me. He looked surprised and then lifted his wrist as if showing off.

That diamond watch was dazzling, and the glint of it stung my heart once again.

I was right—this watch still ended up on Cameron’s wrist.

If that was the case, then what had Zoey wanted to explain to me back then?

I looked at Zoey. She was dressed elegantly and beautifully, holding Cameron’s arm as she spoke coolly.

“Cameron asked you a question. Why aren’t you answering?”

When Zoey asked me that question, my heart trembled, and I stared at her as if she were a stranger.

It took me a long moment to recover before I forced a smile. “Oh, my friend brought me here. I’m just wandering around.”

Zoey no longer paid me any attention and turned instead to fix Cameron’s collar with focus.

But Cameron looked at me with great interest and extended an invitation.

“Sam, can you ride? Go pick a horse and how about we have a race?”

Something in his gaze made me uneasy, so I raised my hand and refused.

“No, I don’t know how to ride.”

But I hadn’t expected Zoey to help Cameron persuade me, telling me not to be so inconsiderate and to listen to him.

I fell silent, staring at Zoey in disbelief.

In that moment, I finally realized—she had truly changed.

The old Zoey would have protected me in every way, never forcing me to do anything, much less making someone like me—who couldn’t even ride—get on a horse.

But now, just to please Cameron, she had changed far too much.

It seemed she genuinely liked him.

As long as my sister-in-law could be happy, what did it matter what happened to me?

I no longer refused and quietly nodded, following Cameron to pick a horse.

Because I had to wear protective gear, I handed my phone and bag to Zoey before leaving.

When we returned, Cameron went ahead to the arena, while Zoey pulled me aside with a strange expression.

“Your aunt just called.”

Hearing the word “aunt,” I tensed up immediately and blurted, “She didn’t say what she wanted with me, did she?”

“No. I said you weren’t here, and she said she’d contact you later.”

Seeing her shake her head, I let out a breath of relief.

Fortunately, she hadn’t found out in advance that I was planning to go abroad.

But the next second, she noticed the shift in my emotions and frowned. “What’s wrong? When did you start contacting your aunt again?”

“It’s nothing. Just half a month ago—my aunt suddenly reached out, saying my uncle wanted a few photos of my mom...”

I didn’t dare meet her eyes and lowered my head, brushing it off casually.

Luckily, she didn’t suspect anything. She relaxed and nodded. “Alright, go ahead. Don’t keep Cameron waiting.”

I answered softly and entered the arena, clumsily mounting the horse under the instructor’s guidance.

But before I could sit steady, Cameron suddenly raised his whip and struck my horse on the hindquarters.

My horse was startled and bolted uncontrollably. I missed the reins completely and lasted less than three seconds before falling off.

I fell onto the ground, landing flat on my chest. Even with the protective vest, pain shot through me so sharply I nearly blacked out.

Gasps filled the arena. Through the blur, I saw Zoey running toward me in a panic.

But when she reached us, she didn’t even look at me. Instead, she lifted Cameron in her arms with concern.

“What happened? Are you hurt?”

Cameron looked shaken and innocent as he shook his head. “I’m fine. I think I twisted my wrist. I didn’t expect Sam to really not know how to ride...”

Only then did Zoey spare me a glance. Seeing me unable to get up from the pain, she didn’t show the slightest distress. She ordered the nearby bodyguards to take me to the hospital, then left with Cameron.

At the hospital, X-rays showed that I had fractured three ribs.

Luckily, there was no injury to internal organs. The doctor strapped my chest and told me to go home to rest.

The bodyguards, without giving me a choice, sent me back to the Shaw residence.

Looking at the familiar surroundings, I thought I would never return again—yet somehow I was back.

But Zoey wasn’t home.

By then, it was already midnight.

Since I could hardly move, I had no choice but to stay for the night.

I lay on the sofa to rest, but the stabbing pain in my chest kept me from falling asleep.

I tossed and turned in agony until around three or four in the morning, when I finally drifted off.

Not long after, the villa’s front door opened—Zoey returned, drunk.

She turned on the lights and saw me lying on the sofa. With unfocused, drunken eyes, she staggered toward me.

She took off her shoes and collapsed into my arms.

One hand rested on my firm chest, the other circled my waist, as she lifted her face and kissed me...

Cameron nodded. Before leaving, the two of them even shared a passionate kiss right in front of me, and only then did he walk out."They were just drafts. Try to see if you can recover them. If not, then let it go. They aren’t anything important. Stay at home. Cancel the lease on that place. You're not going back.""I'm going out to eat with Cameron. I’ll bring whatever you want back for you."Zoey instructed me calmly and then stepped forward, ready to leave.I couldn't believe this was the way she chose to handle the situation.Just like that?"Zoey, wait."I stopped her, my chest feeling as though a huge stone were wedged inside, making it hard to breathe."Cameron obviously stole my drafts—why won’t you believe me? You clearly know this was his fault—this time, the last time, and the time before! Those are my work. What right do you have to decide if it's important or not?"Faced with my suffocated, aggrieved questioning, Zoey still remained calm."Cameron is my fiance.

"What were you standing at the door for? Sam, did you quarrel with your sister-in-law?"When Cameron walked in and saw that both Zoey and I looked upset, he naturally guessed what had happened."You’ve stepped over the line, Sam. Your sister-in-law had raised you with such hardship and care. No matter what happened, you shouldn't have quarreled with her. Zoey, babe, don't be angry. I’ll coax you later."I couldn't be bothered with Cameron's tone, which was laced with gloating, and I liked even less hearing him talking as if he was already Zoey’s husband.I reached out and snatched my laptop back."Give it back! You didn't touch anything inside, did you?"I turned on the laptop to check as I stared at Cameron suspiciously."What did you mean by that? I just borrowed your laptop to check its performance. Why would I touch your things?"Cameron frowned as well."See? I told you Cameron wouldn't touch your things. You're just too sensitive."Zoey breathed a sigh of relief.Altho

But no one mentioned how he had bullied me day after day; I only acted because I had reached my limit.Later, I was punished to stand in the hallway for an entire day, and after school the form tutor notified Zoey to come and compensate the other child. It was the first time I did not dare look into Zoey's eyes—I knew I had made a mistake and caused her enormous trouble. But she neither hit nor scolded me; instead, she shielded me firmly behind her and believed in me without hesitation."Sam would never hit someone for no reason. He must have bullied our Sam and done something really bad! We can pay. The Shaw family is not short of money. But please go home and warn your child—if he dares bully Sam again, then we’ll hit him once for every time he bullies Sam in the future. It's fine if he ends up in the hospital each time. I'll still be able to cover all his medical bills!"Her unyielding stance left the other parent speechless, because they knew full well what kind of child they

Zoey stared at me, as if her gaze could see straight through my heart.I trembled inwardly, but I steadied myself quickly."Yes, I only see you as my sister-in-law.""Then why did you keep calling my name after you blacked out last night, and why were you confessing to me?"Had I lost control again in front of her after getting drunk?Faced with her questioning, I was speechless and lowered my head."I don’t remember...""I knew you would give me that excuse. Sam, I’m really disappointed in you!"Her tone suddenly turned icy, enough to make anyone's heart tremble."When will you finally grow up a little? I've told you countless times—there’s no way that we’ll be together. I will always be your sister-in-law.""I know, Zoey. I truly do. I’ve already started letting go and living a new life," I explained sincerely, but all I received was her mocking, disdainful laugh."Sam, do you think I can't tell? This so-called new life of yours—you gave me money, pretended to leave withou

"Zoey, the former Sam had already grown up and no longer wanted to be controlled by you."I met Zoey's gaze. Her expression grew complicated, as if she felt sad, but I no longer cared. I calmly looked away, forced a smile on my face, and clinked glasses with Jane.Inside the private room, the small episode between me and Zoey went unnoticed by everyone.Due to the "male lead" of the story being present, the crowd was coaxing the two of them to recreate the scene from back then. The next moment, Cameron suddenly knelt on one knee, took a delicate jewelry box from his pocket, and held it out toward Zoey."Zoey, it had been so long, yet I didn't expect you still remembered. I know you’re reminding me that I should buy you another ring, so I already bought one in advance. And this one is a proposal ring."Cameron opened the box, revealing the sparkling diamond ring inside. He spoke with deep affection and proposed on the spot, "Zoey, will you marry me?"The room instantly erupted i

  • Love and Emptiness   Chapter 25

"When I saw him, he was completely disheveled, like a drowned rat, but even so, his eyes were still filled with joy when he looked at me. At that moment, my heart ached, and I couldn't help but hold him. We leaned against each other while hiding from the rain. He suddenly told me he had a surprise for me. I was wondering what it was when he suddenly knelt on one knee and took out a ring from his pocket. At the time, he was soaked from head to toe, yet the ring was somehow dry. I was shocked and laughed, calling him an idiot—after all, a ring didn't fear the rain. But he smiled back and told me that while the ring could get wet, his love could not."Everyone listened intently. My lips trembled, and my eyes gradually became wet.But the next second, Zoey's gaze, full of affection, turned to Cameron beside her."That person was Cameron. We confirmed our relationship that very night. That was my most unforgettable moment."As soon as her voice fell, the room filled with admiration.Bu
