Marco didn’t flinch as I screamed, but I saw the muscle in his jaw tick. He stared at the severed hand lying on the marble floor, blood pooling beneath it like a sick offering.

The guard at the door was pale, his voice hollow as he muttered, "Boss, it's her... it's Isabella, the CCTV caught her. She managed to escape from the dungeon."

Marco stepped forward, blocking the gruesome sight from me with his body. I clutched the silk sheets, my stomach churning, bile rising in my throat. I wanted to ask what the hell was going on, but the words wouldn’t come. All I could do was stare at Marco, silently begging for answers.

He turned toward me slowly, his expression unreadable but his eyes... they were lethal. He crossed the room in three long strides and knelt in front of me.

"Emily," he said gently, his voice tightly controlled, "you need to breathe. Look at me."

I was shaking, but I met his gaze.

"It’s going to be okay," he said. "I won’t let anything happen to you. Do you trust me?"

I didn’t even know anymore, but I nodded. He brushed his fingers across my cheek, and then stood. He turned to the guards, barking a sharp order. "Get this cleaned up. Now. And lock down the house. No one comes in or out."

The guard who had spoken before shifted uncomfortably, like he wanted to say more. Marco noticed. "Spit it out."

"Isabella had help from inside and we found the mole, Boss. It was one of the guards stationed near the west wing. He tried to run when he saw the cameras being reviewed again."

Marco's expression darkened. "Bring him here."

Minutes later, two guards dragged in a man I vaguely recognized, it was one of the two guards who had escorted me from the blood-stained hallway earlier. His lip was split, blood already drying on his face. But he didn't look afraid.

Marco looked him over with cold detachment. "Tell me who you’re working for."

The man spat blood onto the marble. "You already know."

Marco cocked his head. "Isabella." The man grinned, a bloody sneer. "She’s smarter than you. And she’ll finish what she started."

I felt a chill crawl down my spine.

Marco glanced at me. I saw the war raging behind his eyes—a storm of fury barely caged by restraint. He moved slowly, deliberately, walking to the sideboard near his desk. From a drawer, he pulled out a matte black pistol.

The traitor didn't flinch. He just laughed. "What, gonna shoot me in front of your little pet?"

Marco didn’t respond.

Instead, he came to me.

"Emily," he said softly. "Close your eyes."

I blinked up at him. "Marco..."

I hesitated, then slowly, I closed my eyes.

Then I heard the crack of a gunshot split the air. I jumped despite myself, my heart hammering wildly.

I opened my eyes and instinctively looked to the side—but the body was already gone, the floor clean as if nothing had happened.

His guards were already clearing the room, retreating silently with military precision.

Marco sat beside me on the bed, dragging a hand through his dark hair.

"She planted him months ago," he said finally. "Right under my nose. He fed her information, helped her map the mansion’s blind spots."

I felt cold all over. "Why? Why is she doing this?"

He didn’t answer, Instead, he stood and walked to the window, parting the heavy drapes. Rain had started to fall outside, pattering softly against the glass.

"Isabella was once loyal," he said at last. "But something changed, revenge, you see she was in love with me. I should have seen it coming."

"Do you think... she wants me dead?"

He turned slowly. "I know she does. And not just you. Anyone female close to me is a target."

I looked down at my hands. "Then why are you keeping me close? Why not send me away?"

He took a step toward me, "Because sending you away won't keep you safe. I have more enemies than allies, Emily. The only place you’re safe is beside me."

I wanted to believe that, but the pit in my stomach told me otherwise.

He crouched down in front of me again, his tone softer now. "You need to sleep. You need rest."

"I can’t. Every time I close my eyes... I see her."

He didn’t say anything for a moment. Then he reached into his coat and pulled out something, a chain with a small silver pendant.

"Here," he said, placing it in my hand. "It was my mother’s. Wear it. It’s old... but it's something to hold onto."

I looked at him in surprise, this felt... too intimate.

"Thank you," I said quietly.

He nodded once, then turned away. "Get some sleep. I’ll be in the chair."

I curled up again, my fingers clenched tightly around the pendant. And slowly, though I didn’t expect to, I drifted off.

I woke to the feeling of something cold pressing against my neck.

My eyes flew open, it was a blade, I panicked.

Held by a woman with blood dripping from her fingers, her hair tangled, and her eyes wild.

Isabella, alive and Smiling.

"Did you miss me, sweetheart?" she whispered.

Marco was nowhere in sight, I opened my mouth to scream—

Everything went black.

EMILY'S POVAfter Marco left that morning, he came back till later that night. I felt really bad, I tried talking to him several times, but he didn't pay any attention to me.The next morning I woke up early and sat in the parlor, waiting for Marco. Immediately I saw him coming from the stairs, I rushed to him and hugged him. “I'm sorry, I didn't mean to lie to you.” I peeked up at him, “please Marco, I'm sorry, it hurts when you ignore me.” I blinked up at him, my eyes watering. He just looked at me, not saying anything. I pouted and tugged on his suit “please, I'm sorry.” He inhaled, giving me the frustrated look. “Don't ever do that again Emily, don't ever lie to me.” “I promise, I won't lie to you.” I said, nodding my head. “I have a meeting to attend now, I'll see you when I get back. Don't go anywhere without the guards and inform me first. Jonathan is coming with me, but the other guards will remain in the house.” I bounced my head up and down, smiling from ear to ear.

  • Love in lies   The Lie

Tears welled in my eyes, and I turned to look out the window, my entire body felt like ice. Lucan’s voice dropped. “Just… be careful. Some of your enemies are closer than you think.”He unlocked the door. “Go. Before he finds out you’re gone.”“Emily,” Lucan called out, I turned “Think about what I said, I love you Em.” He said and without waiting for a response zoomed off. I walked slowly back into the house, not even noticing the guards returning to their posts.Marco was sitting in the living room, scrolling through his phone. When he saw me, his brow furrowed.“Where were you?”My mouth opened, but nothing came out. What Lican said made sense, I had to observe thi ga first and I figure out which side of the war I was really standing on.I looked at Marco and smiled, “I just stepped out for fresh air. The air here was becoming stuffy.” Marco patted a spot on the couch for me, I walked to the couch and sat down. He placed one hand on my forehead and felt my temperature. “Your b

The next morning, I woke up with a stuffy nose, and my forehead was burning. "You’re awake," Marco said softly. He was sitting on the edge of my bed, a wet towel draped across his arm. His brows were furrowed with concern, he looked like he hadn’t slept."You really are so weak, I can't believe you caught a cold from sleeping on the floor." Marco said teasingly. I smiled at him, I felt so weak, my throat was sore, and my body ached all over. I blinked at him, touched by the care in his voice. Something had definitely changed in Marco, it wasn't like the cold, calculating Marco from before. Each time I felt a little bit uncomfortable, in a matter of seconds he'll be beside me, petting me ensuring I was okay. He stayed beside me the entire day, making sure I took my medication, adjusting the blankets, holding my hand when the fever made me shiver. He even refused to let anyone else nearme.z when Jonathan came to see how I was feeling, he dismissed him.Later in the afternoon, Jona

  • Love in lies   I love you Emily

Marco walked over to me, his eyes looked serious now. “Listen to me carefully, Emily. If you ever see her again anywhere, you text me immediately. You hear?”My heart skipped. “What's going on Marco? Who is she?”He ran a hand through his hair, there was this hesitant look in his eye. Then he let out a long sigh and sat beside me.“Her name’s Seraphina Marchesi.”Seraphina Marchesi? This was the first time I was hearing that name. “She’s a mafia heiress, her father runs one of the oldest families in the region. They were once allies with my father’s group.”I didn't quite understand why family ties would make this Seraphina look at me that way. Or could it be…?My stomach tightened. “Were you with her?”Marco’s gaze darkened. “Before you and I… yeah, we had a thing. It wasn’t love, it was purely physical, I needed a woman and she needed a man.” He said avoiding my gaze. “It was convenient, and when I got married to you—” “You were still seeing her,” I finished quietly. The look of

The sun was warm and the morning felt unusually peaceful, a rare thing these days. The morning felt very peaceful, I woke up feeling different. Marco had gotten up before me. I suddenly felt the need to do something for himAn idea popped in my head, why don't I cook for him? It sounded simple in my head, I'll make hil a proper meal. One made with love… love? That sounded a little weird. I was beginning to really feel like a wife. I took a quick shower and threw on a pair of jeans and a loose white blouse, tied my hair up, and headed downstairs. Jonathan raised an eyebrow when I asked for one of the cars.“Good morning ma'am” he said as we approached the car. “Good morning Jonathan, I'm going to the grocery store,” I said quickly, and I smiled at him. “but It’s not safe yet,” he reminded me, like he always did.“There’ll be guards following me from a distance, right?” I added. “Just don’t smother me.”He sighed but nodded, then gave instructions to the driver and one of the taili

  • Love in lies   I was hers

MARCO'S POVAs I walked out of the room, I felt conflicted. The words “ I love you, Marco” kept replaying in my head, for once in my life I was confused. I didn't know what to do. I walked to my room, I tried putting everything behind me, but I couldn't. I paced up and down the room, but the room felt suffocating. She had no idea what she’d just done. No idea what it meant for me to hear that. For a woman like her to love a man like me.She had seen what I was capable of, she had seen the darkness, the lies and deceit that surrounded me and still she wanted to be with me. I wanted to protect her from everything, but most especially from myself.I rubbed a hand down my face, stopping near the window. My reflection stared back at me, my face looked tired and my eyes were a little sunken. I looked like a man torn in two.You don’t get to have this, I told myself. But when I closed my eyes, all I saw was her. Her soft voice. Her shaking hands. The way her eyes looked when she dropped h
