Ilana had just crossed the border of Nashville, Tennessee when the clock hit midnight. She kept driving until she found the closest motel and then she parked her car and checked in for the night.

She pulled out her phone and texted Calix that she’d arrived at her friend's house. His reply came immediately and she sighed, slipping it back in her pocket.

She’d all but kicked Calix out of the house once she was done with the packing. The real packing was left and there was no way she could do it in front of him. So, she’d kissed him goodbye and asked him to leave, even though her heart had ached at the thought. Then she’d tucked all her daggers in their proper places and also packed her gun and the two burners. The real packing.

“What did you find?” Ilana whispered, clutching on tightly to the burner phone.“Why are you whispering?” Alice said, whispering back dramatically. Ilana rolled her eyes.“Calix is here and I’ve locked myself in the bathroom to talk to you. So, tell me.“He's on a mission. Some warehouse in St.Louis.”“St. Louis, Missouri? That’s like 10 hours from Knoxville,” Ilana wondered aloud. “Wait, who told you that?”“There’s this kid, Henry. He’s a new recruit. I think you know him. Helene sent him to you for a job. He’s been attached to Vincent’s hip ever since he joined.”“Okay, so this job requires radio silence?”“That's the part I'm a little unsure about. I asked Henry if he was able to contact Vincent ever since he left and the kid fumbled really badly. He's hiding something. I could have gotten it out of him if I pushed but you told me not to.”“Yeah, no, that was the right choice,” she replied as she turned the information around in her head, trying to put it in neat little boxes to k

Ilana was ready with two boxes of chowmein from her new favourite place, a soda can and a doctor pepper and the remote control just within reach. She heard Calix’s car pull up and she almost ran towards the door. There was so much nervous energy running through her body, she didn’t know how to channel it properly. “Hi,” she pulled the door open and greeted him before he could even raise his hand to ring the bell.He raised an eyebrow but she ignored it and pulled him in for a hug. “Are you alright?” he asked as she led him inside.“Yes. Well, actually, no. I don’t know.”“Hey, okay, relax darling,” he said softly as he held her by the shoulders. “What's wrong?”My favourite coach who taught me how to kill is now missing and I fear for his ?“Your dad called me in for a chat today.”“Oh, fuck no,” he said, his expressions dropping. He closed his eyes and pinched the bridge of his nose, looking absolutely done with the world.“It's nothing serious. Well, it was serious but I didn't

Ilana blinked and her shoulders involuntarily relaxed. She was expecting something so much worse.“I'm sorry, what?” She blurted out.“I’m not asking as his father. I'm asking as your boss.”This was a comparatively easy question but Ilana suddenly felt just as anxious as she would have felt if she had been caught following them.“Sir, I… yes, we're dating. But it's not… I mean, nobody here knows anything about that. We were…”“Miss Mason,” he cut her off, holding up his hand to stop her rambling. “Are you aware of the consequences of dating your boss?”She opened her mouth to defend herself but then closed it again. “Yes, sir.”“I know I'll sound like an evil villain when I say this but you need to end things with him. If the news gets out, you'll never be able to live it down. It’ll be endless bullying and name calls, not to mention it’ll ruin your professional reputation.”How to tell this old bastard that her professional reputation could care less whether she fucked her boss or

Calix pulled back from the kiss, his breathing uneven, eyes dark and dilated with need. He looked at her like he was memorizing everything—her parted lips, her flushed cheeks, the way she was wrapped around him like she belonged there. He kissed her again—this time slower, deeper—before helping her off his lap and stepping out of the car. She followed, the night air cool against her heated skin, the reality of what she’d just agreed to making her stomach flutter. His hand found hers, fingers interlocking, and she let him lead her across the quiet driveway and into the house. It was dimly lit inside, only the warm glow from the hallway light spilling in. He didn’t rush. He looked back at her as they took the elevator. Her nod was small, but it was enough.Inside his room, everything felt hushed and intimate. He stopped by the edge of the bed, his hands on her waist, thumbs rubbing gentle circles against her shirt. Ilana looked up at him, her breath catching at the way he was looking at

“Let's just get out of here,” Ilana sighed, running her fingers through her hair. “We've already missed half the movie.”He nodded, guiding her out of the cinema and towards his car. She'd put the tracker in his car on the ride here but with the way things were going, she needed to get it out as soon as possible. She took off her shoes and stretched her legs, her feet disappearing under the dashboard area of the car.“Well, talk,” she said once he started the engine. “What have I gotten myself into?”She hated herself for being so harsh to him when he so clearly needed support and some comfort. She was a shitty girlfriend, she was aware but she needed to say and do everything she could to motivate Calix to keep her away from the detectives or the police. He rubbed the back of his neck, glancing at her with a dejected look in his eyes.“You remember I told you about being followed today?”She felt around with her toes so the little area in the corner where she'd stuck the tracker at.“
