Chapter 4

Author: Bowl of Rice
On the day of the engagement party, the Bradford estate buzzed with excitement.

Even Lina and Benedict’s circle of friends showed up, each casting me curious glances as though they were here to witness a spectacle.

The only one absent was Benedict himself, but considering his long-standing disdain for me, that wasn’t surprising.

“Benedict, what are you doing here?” Lina’s startled voice cut through the chatter.

I turned toward the entrance.

Benedict had come after all.

But his choice of attire felt overly formal though he was a family member.

Dressed like that, he looked more like a groom than a guest.

Jealousy flickered across Lina’s face. “Didn’t you say you weren’t coming?”

“I’m taking responsibility for my actions,” Benedict replied stiffly.

“Running away solves nothing. I’m here to make things clear with Sansa.”

He refused to understand his true feelings, but he had instinctively chosen the suit that best matched my gown before leaving the house. Nor did he want to admit that even if I was vain and clingy, his heart still softened at the thought of me.

With a guarded expression, he walked straight toward me. “Sansa, I lied in the message.”

I remained calm. “I didn’t take it seriously. I figured it was another one of those cheap tricks someone came up with for a laugh.”

His frustration mounted. “Then what is all this? Are you and Grandpa trying to force me into marrying you?”

I frowned.

“Benedict, what nonsense are you spouting now?

“I’m getting engaged to Theodore. He’ll be here any moment,” I said firmly.

Benedict scoffed. “He’s still abroad. How exactly is he going to show up and get engaged?”

Without another word, he grabbed my hand against my will and began dragging me toward the main hall.

“Come on. I’ll help you announce the cancellation of this engagement. If there’s backlash, I’ll take full responsibility. You just need to stay silent.”

I stared at him in disbelief and tried to yank my hand free.

“Benedict, are you insane? It’s been three whole years. I’m finally about to marry the man I love! Who are you to tell me to call it off?”

Tears of frustration sprang to my eyes. I had waited too long for Theodore.

Secret love was its own form of torture, and I didn’t want to wait any longer.

When our eyes locked, Benedict froze.

He saw the tears on my face, then glanced down at the suit he’d worn without thinking, the one that just happened to match mine.

A bitter smile tugged at his lips.

He stepped closer, gently raised a hand to brush away the tear slipping down my cheek.

“Don’t cry, Sansa. I’ll marry you.”

But before his fingers could reach me, a hand seized his wrist in a tight grip.

Benedict turned sharply.

It was Theodore.

He wore a calm smile, but the pressure of his fingers on Benedict’s wrist could make bones crack.

His eyes were calm but sharp as blades.

“Benedict,” he said quietly, “why are you harassing Sansa again?”

Then, more sternly, “Come on—apologize to your future sister-in-law.”

I frowned skeptically at Benedict. “Will this really work? Somehow, it feels so unhinged.”Benedict patted his chest and made me a solemn promise, “Don’t worry. I already told Grandpa everything. Just wait and watch the show.”Meanwhile, early that morning, Theodore noticed I was nowhere to be found. “Grandpa, where’s Sansa? And Benedict’s gone too?” he asked.Alexander paused midway through his morning reading, then looked up and said simply, “They left.”Theodore’s voice shot up in disbelief. “They left? Why didn’t you tell me?”Alexander grunted softly. “What business is it of yours? You told Sansa not to like you. It’s better this way, so no need to make a fuss. “Who knows? Maybe when they come back, they’ll already have their baby. You agree, right—”Before he could finish, Theodore dashed out of the house, his clothes barely changed.Watching Theodore’s anxious retreat, Alexander sighed. “Both of them are so stubborn, you only win because Sansa likes you.”At the ai

"We should call off the engagement."The words had barely left my lips when Theodore’s fountain pen froze mid-sentence, its ink bleeding out into a dark blot on the page."You said I shouldn’t love you," I continued. "And I’ve been thinking—feelings can’t be one-sided. If that’s the case, maybe I should just be with Benedict instead."He’s leaving for Windhaven, so I’ll go with him."I turned and walked away, my exit crisp, clean, and final.Behind me, Theodore shot to his feet and shouted, “Wait!”I stopped in my tracks, inwardly giving Benedict a silent high-five.That reverse psychology trick? Surprisingly effective."So… when are you two leaving? I’ll see you off."See us off? What the hell?Who on earth volunteers to send off his own fiancée and her new man to another country? My face darkened instantly as I turned and said coldly, “In a couple of days. I’ll let you know once it’s set.”That night, I lay in bed, tossing and turning, unable to sleep. Was Theodore reall

To be honest, this was the one thing that always puzzled me most.Benedict had always been mischievous and unruly, so it made sense that Alexander tried to control his life. But Theodore wasn't like that. He had skipped grades, graduated from university early, conquered the business world, and handled everything with measured ease. He embodied the image of a perfect heir.Logically, even if Alexander had given the order, he could’ve refused to marry me."Do you have some kind of illness?" I asked, half-joking."You seem like someone who’d marry his career. When I told Grandpa Alexander about it, I thought you’d react like Benedict—turn me down without hesitation."My abrupt question made Theodore laugh. He raised a brow and asked in return, “So, you think I agreed to marry you because something’s wrong with me, because no one else would want me?“Is it so hard to believe… I might just like you?”I chuckled. “I never could read you,” I admitted. “When I started univer

I nodded, unsure what to say at first.“I do. More than anything in the world. I’ve loved Theodore for a very long time. Marrying him makes me very happy.”Benedict looked away, his voice heavy. “And what about me? Do you love me?”I said nothing. Sometimes silence alone was enough of an answer.Benedict smiled bitterly.“It’s no wonder. I haven’t treated you well. I teased you, bullied you, and never showed you respect. “I even let people in our circle give you vile nicknames like ‘Child Bride,’ The Nanny,’ ‘Surveillance System…“You’ve endured so much all these years.”I shook my head, recalling memories of the past. “No, you just had a sharp tongue.“When I was thirteen, I had my first period. We were both clueless. You thought I was dying from all the blood. “You were terrified as you carried me on your back to the infirmary, begging the doctor to save me. Your eyes were swollen from crying.“At sixteen, when I got harassed by some thugs after school, I was scared out

Benedict turned around in disbelief, his eyes fixed on Theodore’s suit which matched my gown better. His face drained of all color as his panic rose.“Why are you back, Theodore?” he asked.Theodore smiled faintly. “This is my engagement party. If I hadn’t come, I was afraid someone else would sweep Sansa away.”Reality finally hit Benedict. He stared at me, his lips trembling. “So all along… You were really going to get engaged to Theodore?”I nodded, slightly puzzled by the intensity of his reaction.“Yes. Didn’t I send you the invitation?“What’s wrong with you lately? Ever since your birthday, you’ve been acting strangely, saying all kinds of nonsense. “This is my engagement party today—if you try to pull another ridiculous prank like that cheap online scheme, I swear, Benedict, I won’t let it go!”Theodore gently pried Benedict’s hand off my wrist and stepped in to defuse the situation, his eyes dark and unreadable.“He’s probably just in shock. It’s been a while sinc
