Chapter 2

Author: The Handsome Guy
My phone chimed with two different notification sounds simultaneously.

One indicated that the email had been sent successfully while the other notified me that I'd received a report of Jade from the hospital, which read, "Pregnancy confirmed. Five weeks along."

I stared dazedly at the screen for a long while.

A second later, I received a text message from Jade.

"Wait for me at the library at noon."

Jade didn't come to see me alone.

The male student she gave special treatment to, Nicholas Dion, was following closely behind her.

He was wearing a limited-edition pair of leather shoes, and he was smiling openly. He nodded to me in thanks when he saw me.

"Thank you, Ms. Quinn and Mr. Shaw, for generously giving me an apartment unit and also paying all my university expenses for the next three years."

My hands shook, and the books stacked up in my arms went tumbling to the floor, but I hardly cared about the pain right now.

"Three years' worth of university expenses?" I blurted out reflexively.

Nicholas replied in confirmation, "That's right. It totals up to about 50 thousand dollars. Thank you, Ms. Quinn and Mr. Shaw."

Wind rushed in through the library door, making my eyes sting.

Jade simply smiled at me. "Stop freaking out. I'm just making an educated investment. On one side, you have two elderly people with a foot in the grave; on the other, you have a top student in his early 20s. Anyone can tell which investment is more worthwhile. Am I wrong?"

I didn't reply or even look at her.

I merely asked quietly, "Have you signed it?"

Jade's smile stiffened on her lips.

She dragged me into a corner before asking in a low voice, "Are you doing this just because I didn't lend you the money?"

I looked straight into her eyes. "That's right. You wouldn't lend me any money, yet you transferred money to his bank account marked as a voluntary gift. You're always on my back about sunk costs and rational investments. Jade Quinn, is it that hard to admit that you're cheating on me?"

Jade's expression visibly darkened. "Aiden! That's an invasion of privacy!"

I scoffed and handed her my phone. "Go on. Call 911. That suits me just fine. I'll ask the police to be the judge of things."

"You—"

Jade pointed an accusing finger at me, her lips pursed tightly.

Seeing more and more people gathering around us, she scoffed and said, "You're not thinking clearly right now, so we're getting nowhere with this conversation. I understand that you're angry and anxious over your grandparents' issue, so you're spouting nonsense, but that's no excuse to randomly demand a divorce."

I grabbed at her sleeve and yelled, "They're your grandparents too! You formally acknowledged them as family back when you married me! Or has the esteemed Ms. Quinn forgotten all about that?"

Jade pulled her hand away uneasily. She glanced at me before softening her tone.

"If push comes to shove, I'll hook you up with a campus loan. I know the campus director, so I can convince them to charge you a little less interest."

I slowly loosened my hold and stared blankly at her.

I was intimately familiar with her face, so why did the very sight of her make me nauseous now?

I turned away and closed my eyes.

"Jade, I regret our marriage now. Let's get a divorce."

Jade stared silently at me instead of trying to persuade me any further.

After a short while, she snorted coldly. "Have you thought this through, Aiden? Do you not want your job anymore?"

I felt like my blood had turned to ice and I could barely breathe.

During my senior year, my grandfather, Timothy Shaw, suffered a cerebral hemorrhage and had been clinging to life by a thread. My grandmother, Dorothy Elmer, was so overcome with anxiety that she fainted on the spot.

I'd had no choice but to drop out of school early and head straight to the hospital with my school expenses and savings from working odd jobs in hand.

In the end, Grandpa's life was saved, but I became a dropout who didn't even have a diploma.

Without a diploma, I couldn't get a job.

After marrying Jade, I got a job at the library thanks to her connections.

She knew that my lack of education was my greatest regret in life and my weak spot, yet she used the fact against me time and time again.

When I wanted to buy health supplements for my grandparents on Thanksgiving Day, she confiscated my bank card, claiming that I couldn't afford to toss money down a bottomless pit when I hadn't even paid that month's mortgage yet.

When I wanted to visit my grandparents over the new year, she snatched the phone I was using to book my plane ticket away. Her excuse was that the university frowned upon part-time employees who became unavailable the moment the holidays started.

In her eyes, my grandparents were bottomless pits while I was a useless part-time employee.

Only Nicholas was a top student who deserved to be held in high esteem.

I looked up at her and retorted sarcastically, "That's my business, not yours."

Jade stopped moving and stayed rooted to the spot.I continued, my gaze growing colder as I spoke, "Because I gave them 30 thousand dollars the night before and told them that it was from you. The hotel staff told me that despite being bad with directions, they spent a long time asking the front desk for directions before taking the bus to find you."They did it in order to thank you, but what did you do? You and your dearest student ran them over with a car… and instead of rushing them to a hospital immediately, you left them to lie in a pool of their own blood, bleeding their chances of survival away."I clenched my fists and sneered through gritted teeth."You're asking me to save you now, Jade, yet why didn't you save them back then? Was it because they were already 90 years old and were not long for this world anyway? Were they 'bad investments' in your eyes and thus not worth saving?"Every question I asked seemed to strike her like a physical blow.Jade stared at me with w

The lawsuit practically ended in an overwhelming victory for my side.Surveillance cameras had caught the moment Nicholas drove over the bodies of my grandparents.Despite Jade's efforts to buy the silence of the surveillance operators, it didn't stop Artemis and me from obtaining some firsthand footage.Coupled with witness testimonies and physical evidence, both Jade and Nicholas were unable to escape blame. On the day the verdict was handed down, Nicholas even turned on Jade in order to secure a lighter sentence. He pointed at her and cried toward the judge and the council, "Your Honor and dear councilmen, you've got it all wrong! It was Ms. Quinn who incited me to floor the accelerator that day."She told me that the elderly duo were insatiably greedy and had approached her to ask for or borrow money multiple times, like a couple of nasty leeches. She hated them, which is why… I didn't have ill intentions, but she was carrying my child and threatened me into doing it."Gasps

I watched as Jade shifted through a variety of emotions.A few seconds later, she finally regained her senses and looked at me with gritted teeth."Aiden, aren't you going overboard? Not only do you refuse to sign the private settlement form, but now you even want me to give up all my marital assets!"I lifted my hand, took the divorce agreement from Artemis, and presented it to Jade once more.I didn't argue or say anything at all. In fact, I didn't even look at her.I simply gazed at the covers while saying slowly and clearly, "Sign it, or don't. I stand to gain either way. I saved records of every penny you spent on Nicholas and evidence of every favor you did for him, including the conversation we just had."Jade froze, her hand hanging in midair. Her entire body seemed to sway. The room was dead silent. After a long moment, she picked up a pen with trembling hands and wrote down her name on the divorce agreement with heavy, careful strokes.I leaned back against the pillo

When I next regained consciousness, it felt like a century had gone by.The white lights above me were blinding. My eyes stung, but no tears welled up.I knew that my grandparents, who had taken care of me since I was a child, were no longer around.Their bodies had probably been taken to the morgue. It was very quiet in the hospital ward, quiet enough that I could hear Jade comforting Nicholas from the doorway. She was saying in a low voice, "Honey, he just fainted, and he also lost his grandparents. I can't leave right now. Give me a few more days. Don't worry. I'll definitely sort this incident out for you."I couldn't hear Nicholas' reply through the phone, but Jade lowered her voice even further. She asked coyly, "Didn't I leave a bank card with you before I left, you rascal? It contains the funding for my research team, so watch your spending…"As I listened to her voice and gazed at the blinking red light on my phone, I gradually broke into a smile. When the door was op

Jade's expression visibly shifted. She stared disbelievingly at me.My head felt like it was about to explode.Just as I was about to hit the floor, I thought I heard two voices calling out to me.After that, my memories were a mess. One moment, I was back in my childhood days with my grandparents collecting used bottles for the money to buy me some bread. The next moment, I was riding through the campus on my bicycle with Jade in the back seat.Back then, she hadn't yet become a university professor. She'd just been an economics student whose family was more well-off than mine. She'd looked out for me a lot at that time.I'd gotten to know her because I'd taken an elective in economics. She'd been very curious as to why a law student like me would take an interest in economics, but she hadn't asked me outright. On the contrary, she'd even given me all the notes she'd personally written over the years.Later on, she'd started giving me more than just notes, such as romantic

Water dripped from my hair onto my face, doing nothing to cool the burning ache in my heart. My throat felt tight.Jade opened the door and showed me the text message containing the positive diagnosis report. She said aloud, "I'm talking to you here. I'm really pregnant."She was smiling with undisguised joy.I looked up at her and said in an eerily calm tone, "Then, tell me—How did you conceive when we haven't slept together in three months? Who's the child's actual father?"Jade was caught off guard, her smile freezing on her lips. Her joy quickly receded like the tide. She flung her phone to the floor, pointed a finger at me, and yelled angrily, "Aiden Shaw, you're slandering me! This… This child is clearly yours!"As she spoke, she took on a look of utter disappointment."I knew it… All you do is beg for money. You contribute absolutely nothing to this family otherwise," she continued. She spoke very softly but not softly enough that I couldn't make out every word. She f
