I sigh. “I think you’re right, Jessica. It seems I’m overthinking everything.”

“Of course, you are. So what’s it going to be?”

“I’m going to have lunch with Sam,” I say with a smile.

“That’s my girl!” Jessica squeals happily. “So… you’re going to need a new dress, and I’m going to be your fairy godmother.”

“Jess, I have a closet full of dresses; I don’t need a new one,” I inform her.

“Are you crazy? You’re going on a date with a freaking billionaire, Nicey. You need a new dress, and that’s final. You should be thankful that you have a talented stylist cum fashionista like me as your friend. Now get up, let’s go.”

I groan out loud. I’m not in the mood for shopping, much less with Jessica, who has an expensive taste in everything. She’ll probably make me spend all of my profit on just one silly dress.

“If I must buy a new dress, I’ll be the one to choose,” I tell her with a serious face.

Jessica sucks her teeth loudly in disapproval. “Eunice the miser. I have never seen a woman who shies away from shopping as much as you do. It’s weird.”

“Are you in or out?” I ask her. “I get to choose the dress.”

“So why am I going with you?”

“For moral support. And because this dress shopping thing is your idea.”

“Whatever,” she says nonchalantly, but I know she’s excited.

On our way out, I inform my staff that I am going out and will not be returning for the rest of the day. I also instruct Jamie to go ahead and lock up the store at closing time.

Despite my initial reservation, I find myself feeling excited as Jessica and I get into her car and head to her boutique. Halfway through our ride, something occurs to me.

“He said he would text me, but I didn’t give him my number,” I say quietly.

“Who?” Jessica asks me.

“Sam. When he was leaving my office, he said he would call me, but he didn’t ask for my number.”

“Don’t be silly. If he could find your shop address, what’s your phone number that he can find as well?”

“I guess you’re right.”

“Honey, I’m always right.”

I laugh at Jessica’s usual humor and settle back in my seat. But then, another thought occurs to me.

“Don’t you think it’s a bit creepy that he tracked me down just to ask me out on a date?” I ask my friend.

“It would be creepy if he was broke.”

We both laugh and spend the rest of the trip making jokes about how Sam might turn out to be an axe murderer. Or maybe the Sam who showed up at my store today was an imposter. I laughed so much that every bit of apprehension I felt before melted away.

When we arrive at Jessica’s boutique, she takes me straight to the premium collection section. Every single item there looks like something straight from a runway.

“Have no fear, my darling. I’m going to give you a hefty discount once you’ve made your choice,” Jessica says.

“Oh, I’m not worried about the price,” I tell her with a wave of my hand. “But Jessica, these dresses are fire!”

“Thank you, my love. Listen, have a look at them, and if you don’t find anything suitable for you, we’ll go to the real designer boutiques to find you something better.”

“But these are designers too.”

“I know. Some clients prefer to shop in the place that carries the same label as the dress they’re buying.”

“You know I don’t care about that,” I say with a laugh. “Alright, let the shopping begin!”

Jessica pulls out several dresses from the rack and makes me try them on one after the other. By the time I try on the fourth dress, I’m exhausted and ready to quit.

I don’t understand how some women enjoy doing this all day. If I have to try one more dress, I’ll probably rip my hair out of my scalp!

“I think this one is nice,” I tell Jessica wearily.

“Liar. You’re tired, aren’t you?”

“Look, it’s just lunch, ok? I don’t have to wear anything too fancy.”

“Maybe if you were going on a date with some random guy. Not with a freaking billionaire!”

“He’s still a random guy. I don’t really know him like that.”

“Still, if you knock his socks off on your first date, then there might be a second and a third until you become his girlfriend.”

“You wish!” I laugh, but Jessica doesn’t join me.

“I don’t like how you think of yourself,” she says soberly. “You’re a beautiful, intelligent, and amazing woman, Eunice. I wish you’d see that and realize that you’re good enough for the Sam Ewings of this world.”

I’m touched by her words, and I feel my eyes stinging a little. Jessica isn’t the type of person to flatter anyone or throw compliments around. If my friend thinks that I’m a badass, then it means she truly believes it.

Maybe it’s time for me to start believing I’m all that and more too. Maybe it’s time for me to stop living in the shadows of my past and start embracing this new me.

“You’re right,” I say softly. “I’m good enough.”

Jessica grins. “Now, you’re talking. So, are you ready to try on a few more dresses? Tomorrow’s about to be lit, and you need to go with all your guns blazing.”

“I don’t have guns, Jess.”

“It’s a metaphor!”

“Yeah, whatever. Ok, next dress!”

“I don’t understand why I’m more excited about this date than you are.”

“Maybe it’s because you’re a hopeless romantic who is too optimistic for her own good.”

Jessica laughs. “Life is hard enough already. Optimism keeps me sane.”

“Good for you.”

“Now, check this beauty out,” says Jessica, holding up a black sequined dress that looks too good to be a lunch date outfit.

When Jessica notices my skeptical facial expression, she says, “Go big or go home, huh?”

“Go home,” I respond flatly, and she laughs again. “Come on, Jess. Let’s get this over with. Next!”

  • Loving Her Second Chance Billionaire   Back to Basics

Our lunch date continues without further drama. The food is splendid, and our conversations are flowing easily.By unspoken agreement, Sam and I do not talk about any more personal topics. He tells me about his businesses and some of the wildest trips he’s had across the world. When it’s time for dessert, he whips out his mobile phone from his pocket and comments on having over 20 missed calls as soon as he looks at the screen. I take that as my cue to leave.“This has been fun,” I say sincerely. “Thank you for inviting me to your home.”“Why do you suddenly sound like a TV presenter who just concluded an interview with me?”I laugh. “I didn’t mean to sound like a TV presenter.”“We should do this again soon,” he says smoothly.“Uh, ok,” I reply uncertainly.“What?”“Well, I was so sure that after that… snag upstairs, you wouldn’t want us to hang out anymore.”Sam chuckles. “That’s forgotten already. Besides, I’m on the lookout for good friends, and you seem to fit that role perfectly

“It does look like a palace,” I admit to him. “The amount of gold here is blinding, though. Are any of them real?”“The gold? I doubt it. But then again, judging by how much Paula’s friend billed me for this, they might as well be real.”“Amazing,” I murmur, unable to hide my wonder. “I feel like Alice in Wonderland.”“So, what does that make me? The Mad Hatter or the Cheshire Cat?”“Honestly, I’m yet to figure that out. But there’s still enough time for me to figure that out.”Sam smiles in response. He’s enjoying my wordplay as much as I am. It’s like verbal foreplay, and I can almost feel his excitement each time I say something… promising.“Shall we continue the tour?” He asks finally.“Of course, good sir. Lead the way, please.”With an amused chuckle, he leads me down the hall that connects to a long corridor.r’ It almost seems as if we are now walking through the lobby of a fancy hotel. There are doors on either side of the corridor. The floor is carpeted with a long, soft red

  • Loving Her Second Chance Billionaire   The Next Level

“You’re one fascinating woman, Eunice,” Sam says mysteriously.“More fascinating than any woman you’ve had lunch with before?” I venture.“Absolutely,” he answers promptly.“Hmm… Why me?”“What?”“Why me, Sam? Out of all the sexy, hot famous women you could invite to lunch today, why did you choose me?”He chuckles. “You make it sound like I’m some shallow bum, roaming the streets in search of random starlets to date.”“Aren’t you?”“That’s what the media say I am. But I’m sure you know you shouldn’t believe everything you hear about people you don’t know.”“Well said,” I say and raise my glass in a mock salute to him.Sam sips his drink instead while watching me thoughtfully. It’s as if he’s trying to decide whether to defend himself or just let the topic slide.I take another sip of wine, and the glass becomes empty. Gosh, the wine tastes so good! I feel even bolder than before.“And now, here I am,” I say with a slight unintentional drawl, “drinking this expensive wine with you in

  • Loving Her Second Chance Billionaire   Getting to Know Each Other

As if on cue, a young man dressed as a waiter walks in through one of the adjoining double doors to the dining room. As I initially guessed, those doors lead to the kitchen. The waiter-looking guy places a pamphlet in front of me and another one in front of Sam, and then he steps back as if to wait for our feedback.“Thank you, Austin,” says Sam to the guy. “Here’s our menu, Eunice. You can go ahead and order what you’d like to eat.”“A menu?” I ask, amused. “Isn’t this your home?”“It is,” he replies with a smile. “I don’t know if you and I have the same taste in food, so I think it’s only fair that you get to choose what you’ll enjoy eating.”“Wow, that’s grand,” I say with genuine awe.Rich people are weird. They get catered to by professional chefs and waiters, and then they even have extensive menus to choose from. How extravagant!“Well, to be honest, I don’t do this every day,” he admits. “I hardly eat at home anyway, but today is a special occasion, and that’s why I had to get

  • Loving Her Second Chance Billionaire   Lunch with Mr. Billionaire

The moment I step into the hall, it’s as if I have been transported into another realm. To say the house is beautiful would be the understatement of the century.Sam’s house is beyond fabulous with its high ceilings, expensive furnishings, and a variety of exotic oil paintings in different sizes. Two winding staircases lead upstairs on either side of the front hall. There is a 12-foot fish tank with exotic aquatic animals inside, standing at the center of the room, separating the living room from the dining area. I cannot even fathom the right words to describe the place. The house looks like a freaking palace!“Welcome to my humble home,” Sam says with arms spread wide as he approaches me from the other side of the fish tank.He is dressed in a crisp white shirt with the sleeves rolled up just below his elbows and a pair of grey tailored pants. His feet are encased in plain grey moccasins.Simply put, he looks edible, and I’m starting to feel a different kind of hunger.“There is not

  • Loving Her Second Chance Billionaire   The D-Day

Time seems to fly by as I busy myself with the inventory report. Before I know it, it’s 1:25, and I’m starting to feel pangs of hunger.“Maybe I should grab a quick snack before lunch,” I wonder aloud.Someone knocks on my door just then.“Yes?” I respond.Joy steps in with a wide smile on her face.“Someone’s here to see you,” she says almost breathlessly.“Is it Mr Ewing?” I ask her.“No. It’s someone else. He looks like a chauffeur, and he arrived in a Bentley!”“Calm down, Joy. Did he tell you his name?”“Marcus. He said he’s here to take you to lunch.”“Marcus? And he mentioned my name?”“Yes. I think he’s Samson Ewing’s driver. I’ve seen a photo of him posing with that car on Instagram before. It’s his car. I’m sure of it!”“Thank you, Joy. I’ll be out shortly.”The girl hurries off as if she’s the one going on the date. I pick up my phone to check with Sam, and I realize that he already sent me a text nearly 30 minutes ago.Oops!“Hi, Eunice. My driver will arrive at your store
