MasukJessica breezes into my office like a sweet-smelling whirlwind. She looks as if she has just won the lottery and can’t wait to start spending her winnings.
“I want all the details, now!” She demands authoritatively and settles herself on one of the chairs in front of my desk. “Go!”
I laugh. “Calm down, Jessica Rabbit. It’s not that serious.”
“Don’t call me that. Now, start talking.”
“I’ve already told you everything that happened.”
“No, you didn’t. Start from the very beginning. From that part about you running into him at the restaurant and you two kissing.”
“Ugh…” I groan.
“Girl! How did that happen? Who kissed who first? Why did the kiss even happen if you two have never met before? Am I missing something in this story? What haven’t you told me, Nicey?”
Jessica’s excitement over my about-to-be-revived love life amuses me. She and I are similar in many ways, and that is why I gravitate towards her more than the other ladies in our friendship circle.
I feel like she’ll be the best to understand my predicament right now more than anyone else. I clear my throat playfully before speaking again.
“As I said on the phone, the first time we met was at the restaurant during my ‘freedom party’, which you guys threw for me. We sort of had an eye contact moment in the restaurant, and then we ran into each other at the lobby.”
“Wait, what’s an eye contact moment?” Jessica asks seriously.
She seems to be soaking up every single word that comes from my mouth. It’s as if I’m dropping some wisdom nuggets for her to learn from.
“Well, you know… our eyes met across the room and we just sort of stared at each other for a couple of seconds,” I explain.
“Ooh… I like that,” she squeals and rubs her palms together gleefully. “And then what happened?”
“And then we kind of bumped into each other in the lobby as I was returning from the restroom. He told me his name, I told him mine, and when I turned to leave, I tripped, and he caught me. And then I, you know, I kissed him.”
Jessica gasps and bolts out of the chair. She does a weird dance in front of my desk while cackling like a maniac.
“Now, that’s what I’m talking about!” She laughs. “I love it. So romance novel-ish.”
“I know, right?” I agree. “It was ridiculous. I don’t know what came over me.”
“Are you kidding? I’ve been waiting my whole life to experience an impulsive, sexy moment like that, and here you are, living my fantasy and complaining about it. Come on, girl, get it!”
“Listen, Jessica,” I begin calmly. “I know every woman has at one time or the other fantasized about randomly meeting a handsome billionaire who will kiss them till their knees buckle and their insides turn to jelly, and then they’ll fall in love and live happily ever after.”
“And it has finally happened to you, Eunice. You’re living every girl’s dream!”
“This is real life, my dear, and I think I’m way in over my head here. And speaking of dreams…”
“Uh-huh? Go on, what happened?”
I tell her the dream I had the night after I met Sam. Jessica listened intently, and when I finished talking, she did her stupid dance again.
“This is it, my darling Nicey,” she says joyfully. “This is the meaning of the dream.”
“You think so?” I ask uncertainly.
“I know so, honey,” she replies confidently. “The man literally combed all of San Francisco to find you. That’s why he wouldn’t let you go in the dream. He wants you.”
“I don’t know…”
“I don’t understand your hesitation. Men don’t go after the women they don’t want. That should tell you everything you need to know already.”
“But – “
“Leave the buts, Nicey. Don’t kill the vibe. We should celebrate this and tell the others too.”
“Let’s not tell them yet,” I say quickly. “It’s too soon.”
Jessica rolls her eyes and returns to the chair. “OK, Miss Party Pooper.”
“What if Sam is messing with me?”
“Why would he do that? Isn’t he too busy to be playing games with a random woman he literally moved mountains to find?”
“Be honest, Jessica. Why would a guy like Sam Ewing want to date a woman like me? We’re not from the same social circles or tax brackets. What’s the catch?”
“I think you’re overthinking this.”
“As if him showing up here wasn’t crazy enough, I went and stupidly agreed to have lunch with him tomorrow. What am I doing, Jessica?”
“What you are doing is getting your life back,” she replies matter-of-factly. “I know this thing with this billionaire guy seems too good to be true, but so what? It’s not like he’s going to ask you to marry him tomorrow.”
“I hope not,” I reply with a nervous giggle.
“It’s just a lunch date, and if it blossoms into something more, so what? Eunice, you seem to have forgotten that you are single now.”
“Yeah, that’s going to take some getting used to,” I admit.
“Walter made you miserable for most of your marriage to him, and now the universe is giving you an opportunity to have a slice of happiness, and you’re hesitating. Girl, what wouldn’t I give to be in your shoes right now?”
Jessica’s words put me at ease a little. It appears that I might truly be overthinking this thing with Sam. This is probably just a chance for me to have a little fun and then carry on with the rest of my life.
My friend is probably right. This thing isn’t worth all the far-fetched conspiracy theories that I’m creating mentally. As Sam had said, it’s not that deep. I need to chill out.
“Yes, Mother. This is Eunice, my girlfriend,” Sam answers his mother proudly.“Good afternoon, ma’am,” I greet her politely, not sure if I should embrace her or just stay put.“I haven’t heard much about you,” she says plainly, ignoring my greeting. “I thought she was someone… younger,” she says to Sam, but her eyes are still on me.“Come on, Mother. Why would you say that?” Sam asks her in a tone that shows his irritation with his mother’s rude comment.“It was merely an observation, not an insult. You aren’t offended, are you?” She asks me with a bland expression.“No, I’m not,” I say, even though I feel like turning around and walking out of this unbelievably beautiful house right now.“Good,” she says with what looks like a smirk. “Come now, my love. Your father is seeing to the barbecue with Paula. You know that’s her forte, right? She does it so well.”“Paula is here?” Sam asks in surprise.“Yes. I invited her over,” his mother replies in a tone that shows her decision is final.
Brandon Ewing and his wife, Marissa Ewing, own a six-plot land on which their lavish three-story mansion is built. The vast property features an additional two-story staff building, two cottages that serve as guest houses, a luxury spa, and an Olympic-sized swimming pool in the back. There is also a vegetable/herbs garden in the east wing, a grand gazebo set in a mini flower maze in the west wing, and an expansive underground garage just off the driveway leading to the front of the house. The Ewing residence screams of unquantifiable wealth, and for a moment, I feel out of place. It’s as if I have just stepped onto a different planet.“I’m seriously struggling to come up with the right words to describe this place,” I confess to Sam in awe.“I know, right?” He responds with a chuckle. “It gets me every time too.”“It’s as if we’ve just stepped across the continent and appeared in a beautiful European countryside,” I continue in my awestruck tone. “What on earth is this place?”Sam lau
“Heather has been with me for a very long time, and she’s a hardworking woman,” Sam says to me quietly.“So?” I ask him sharply.“So, I don’t want to fire her,” he explains.“You don’t have to fire her,” I assure him. “Just put her in her place,e or I will. I told you yesterday that she doesn’t like me, and now she has proven it. If she tries another stunt like that with me, I won’t hold back.”Sam chuckles and plants a tender kiss on my forehead. “My feisty Eunice. Don’t worry, I’ll talk to her.”“Please, do.”“In the meantime, will you share my cup of coffee with me? Since you don’t trust Heather to make another one for you.”“Well, you don’t expect me to give her a chance to finally poison me, do you?”Sam laughs heartily. “Don’t be ridiculous, Eunice. Heather wouldn’t do that. She’s harmless.”“Whatever,” I say with a shrug and return to my seat. I share Sam’s coffee with him, and afterward, he takes me on a tour of his house.Once that’s done, we head back upstairs to shower and
“Eunice, are you crying?” Sam asks me and draws back to take a look at my face.I try to look away, but he captures my face in his hands and asks, “What is it? Are you ok? Is it because of the visit?”“No,” I respond, shaking my head slowly.“We won’t go if you don’t feel up to it,” Sam tells me tenderly. “Please, don’t cry, my darling. Talk to me. What is it?”No matter how hard I try, the tears won’t stop flowing. I don’t even know how to put my feelings into words without weirding him out.How do I say, ‘I love you, but I don’t want to love you?’ Wouldn’t that be the craziest thing he’s ever heard?“It’s nothing,” I finally respond to Sam’s questions. “I guess I just miss my children.”“Are you sure that’s why you’re crying?” He asks me sceptically. “You know we can always do a video call so you can see them whenever you want. That’s what we’ve been doing since we got here, so why would you cry because you miss them? What aren’t you telling me, Eunice?”I avert my eyes quickly beca
“Hello, Mother. Good morning,” Sam says with a dramatic yawn. I’m sure it’s just for effect so that his mother can know for sure that this phone call is the reason why he is awake this early on a holiday morning.“Good morning, Sam,” Marissa Ewing responds crisply. “I’m sure you’re doing excellently, so there’s no need for me to ask.“I was doing excellently in my sleep until you called and woke me up for a phone call that I am sure isn’t urgent,” Sam complains.“What a rude thing to say,” his mother fires back sharply.“Sorry.”“Where are you?” She demands in that same crisp tone.“In my house,” Sam replies tiredly.“Where?”Sam sighs in exasperation. “North Salt Lake.”“So, it’s true?”“What’s true?”“You’ve been in town all this time and didn’t even think to drop in and say hello to your parents? I thought you said you were bringing your new girlfriend to see us?”“Yes, Mother. I’ll bring her around. Is that why you called?”“Isn’t that enough reason?” she replies sardonically. “I
Sam’s bedroom is a suite, complete with a spacious walk-in closet featuring designer everything from shoes to clothes, hats, and even his underwear. The place looks like a mini boutique.“It’s the bougie-ness for me,” I remark with a giggle.“You already know that I am bougie personified,” Sam replies with a laugh. My bag has already been propped against the wall beside the closet, so I open it and rummage inside for something to wear for our casual lunch date. For some weird reason, I wish I could hang my clothes in the wardrobe beside Sam’s clothes. Not just temporarily, but permanently.I wish we could remain here in this comely house with its inviting ambiance and amazing views. I wish I could bring my daughters here and – wait a minute! What the heck are these foolish thoughts running through my mind?“It’s shower time, baby,” Sam announces from somewhere behind me.I turn around and start laughing when I see that he has stripped off all of his clothes and is waiting for me with
