The cemetery was quiet.

Nick stood at the edge of the path, his hands in his pockets, his eyes fixed on a headstone in the distance. He hadn't been here in years. Not since the funeral. Not since they had lowered his father into the ground and covered him with dirt.

Emma stood beside him, her hand on his arm.

"You don't have to do this alone," Emma said.

"I know."

"I can wait here."

Nick looked at her. The sun was behind her, lighting up her hair like a halo.

"No," he said. "Come with me."

  • Loving Mr. Vance in Silence   The Guest list

The guest list was supposed to be simple. That was Nick's word. Simple. He had repeated it so many times that Emma had started to believe him. But as she sat at the kitchen table, surrounded by papers and sticky notes and Eleanor's handwritten additions, she realized that nothing about this list was simple."Your mother wants to invite her bridge club," Emma said.Nick didn't look up from his laptop. "How many people are in her bridge club?""Twelve.""We're not inviting twelve people from her bridge club.""She already sent them save-the-dates."Nick looked up. "She what?"Emma held up a stack of cards. "She had them printed. She addressed them. She mailed them."Nick rubbed his temples. "I'm going to kill her.""You're not going to kill her. You're going to call her and explain that we have a limit.""What's our limit?"Emma looked at the spreadsheet she had been working on for three days. "One hundred and fifty.""And how many people are on the current list?""Two hundred and thirt

Devoted Father. He wasn't sure that was true. His father had been devoted to the company. To his reputation. To the empire he had built. But devoted to his sons? Nick wasn't sure."Dad," Nick said. The word felt strange in his mouth. He hadn't said it in years.Emma squeezed his hand."I'm getting married," Nick said. "To Emma. The woman I told you about. The one from the basement."The wind blew t

The call came on a Friday.Emma was at the Healing Hearts office, reviewing her notes from the week. She had been volunteering for two months now — two months of listening, of sitting, of holding space for people who had survived the unimaginable. It was hard work. But it was good work. Her phone buzzed. Rachel's name appeared on the screen."Rachel," Emma answered. "Is everything okay?""I need to see you."Emma's heart tightened. "When?""Now. I'm at the office.""I'm here. Come in."---Rachel walked through the door a few minutes later. She looked different — lighter, somehow. Her shoulders were less tense. Her eyes were less tired. She was holding something in her hands — a small piece of paper.Emma gestured to the chair across from her. "Sit."Rachel sat. She didn't speak for a long moment. She just stared at the paper in her hands."I've been seeing someone," Rachel finally said.Emma's eyes widened. "Someone?""A therapist. Margaret recommended her. I've been going for six we

The wedding planning began on a Tuesday.Emma woke to a text from Eleanor — not a call, not an email, a text. The woman who had once refused to use a smartphone was now sending messages in all caps with multiple exclamation points.Eleanor: VENUE TOUR. THURSDAY. 10 AM. I'M SENDING A CAR.Emma stared at the screen. Nick was still asleep beside her, his arm draped across her waist, his breathing slow and steady. She showed him the phone."Your mother texts in all caps," Emma said.Nick opened one eye. "She's excited.""She's terrifying.""She's both."Emma sighed. "What have I gotten myself into?"Nick pulled her closer. "A family. Congratulations."---Thursday arrived cold and bright. The car came at 9:30 AM — a black sedan with tinted windows and a driver in a suit. Emma wore the blue dress, the one Eleanor had helped her pick. Nick wore a gray suit and the silver tie. They sat in the back seat, holding hands."First stop," the driver said, "The Grandview Estate."Emma's stomach tigh

The ring sat on Emma's finger like a secret. She couldn't stop looking at it. The diamond caught the light — small and bright, simple and perfect. It had been on her hand for exactly twelve hours. She had slept with it under her pillow, afraid it would disappear. Nick had laughed at her."It's not going anywhere," he had said."I know.""You keep checking.""I know."Nick had pulled her close. "It's real, Emma. We're real."She had believed him. Now, standing in the kitchen of the penthouse, wearing his sweater and a pair of leggings, she looked at the ring again. The morning sun streamed through the windows, setting the diamond on fire."We need to tell people," Nick said.Emma looked up. He was standing in the doorway, already dressed in a gray suit and the silver tie. His hair was perfect. His jaw was set. But his eyes were soft."People?" Emma asked."Olivia. Daniel. My mother."Emma's stomach tightened. "Your mother.""She's going to find out eventually.""Can we wait until event

  • Loving Mr. Vance in Silence   The Wedding Day

The wedding was supposed to be simple. That was Olivia's word. Simple. She had repeated it so many times that Emma had started to believe her. But as Emma stood in the bridal suite, staring at her sister's reflection, she realized that nothing about this day was simple.Olivia was wearing a white dress — lace and silk, fitted and flowing, the kind of dress that made everyone who saw it cry. Her hair was swept up in an elegant twist. Her veil was long and sheer and caught the light like morning mist."You look beautiful," Emma said.Olivia's eyes filled with tears. "Don't make me cry. I just did my makeup.""You look beautiful and your makeup is perfect."Olivia laughed — a wet, shaky laugh. "I'm getting married.""You're getting married.""In two hours.""In two hours."Olivia took Emma's hands. "Thank you. For everything."Emma's throat tightened. "I didn't do anything.""You survived. You came back. You're here." Olivia squeezed her hands. "That's everything."Emma pulled her sister
